zackkatz··on Will A.I. Ever Be Smarter Than a Four-Year-Old?
Yes.

I found this article to be slanted. This quote, for example, assigns too much creativity to a logic-based statement that I think is precisely the type of reasoning AI exhibits.

> Four-year-olds can immediately recognize cats and understand words, but they can also make creative and surprising new inferences that go far beyond their experience. My own grandson recently explained, for example, that if an adult wants to become a child again, he should try not eating any healthy vegetables, since healthy vegetables make a child grow into an adult. This kind of hypothesis, a plausible one that no grown-up would ever entertain, is characteristic of young children.

Also, I suggest updating the title to be less click bait-y. “The difference between bottom-up and top-down machine learning for beginners” or something like that.

zackkatz··on Putsack – Anonymous Paste and Encryption Tool
Horrible anti-Semitic stuff on there from the “latest 30 pastes”.
zackkatz··on Microsoft decides IE 10 has had its fun: Termination set for Jan 2020
Just yesterday I hit an IE 11 issue that forced a JavaScript hack to resolve.

Goodbye, IE 10. Hopefully IE 11 will soon follow.

zackkatz··on Gaming the lottery: How one winner used math to overcome the odds
Ah yes. I have a tendency of skipping the first paragraph to get to the meat of the story. Thanks for pointing it out!
zackkatz··on Gaming the lottery: How one winner used math to overcome the odds
The author lays out all the math and practical considerations and then…skips to the conclusion.

Did he put it to the test? Seemingly not. And now that the methods are explained, there will likely be too many other people trying this to make any money from it.

This article is essentially a white hat hacker disclosing a vulnerability.

zackkatz··on Tim Berners-Lee says tech giants may have to be split up
I suggest the title be changed to remove “Father of Web”.

“Tim Berners-Lee says…” is better.

zackkatz··on Testing the June Intelligent Oven
Likewise. The brain got fried and my convection button now toggles Celsius on and off.

This looks like the spiritual successor to the Breville.

zackkatz··on Does Kit Kat’s Shape Deserve a Trademark? E.U. Adds a Hurdle
I’m surprised more people are not in the affirmative on this.

If I saw a chocolate product that had the same shape, I would immediately recognize it as Kit Kat. It is distinctive, worth protecting, and I don’t think Nestle is being overly greedy here.

zackkatz··on The hotel bathroom puzzle
Yes, but then the problem becomes possibly being locked out of your own bedroom, stuck in the shared bathroom!
zackkatz··on BigCommerce raises $64M to power e-commerce sites
I’ve never had a worse webdev experience than attempting to create a BigCommerce theme. There are hundreds of theme files, and a maddeningly incomplete and inconsistent templating tag system.

I was so jealous (as I was creating hundreds of duplicative templates) of Shopify and their Liquid templating language.

I now hate BigCommerce for being so hard to work with.

zackkatz··on 'The Gig Economy' Is the New Term for Serfdom
I disagree with many of the points made by the article. I just found that last quote to be the one that best summed-up the problem the cabbies find themselves in.

I’m a believer in mobility: if life isn’t working in NYC, then perhaps move to another place with fewer drivers and a lower cost of living. Just because you like a place and have roots there doesn’t mean life should be affordable and lovely. Much of human history is the story of leaving one place for another, in search of better living conditions.

It seems that they—like publishers were!—are mentally stuck in an old paradigm. Transportation has changed; adapt or move on.

zackkatz··on 'The Gig Economy' Is the New Term for Serfdom
I found the best quote from the article to be the last:

> “Horses in Central Park are regulated,” he pointed out. “There’s 150 of them. They make a great living there, the guys on the horse and buggies. Say Uber comes in and says, ‘We want to bring in Uber horses. And we want to add 100,000.’ And let’s see how the market will handle it. We know what’s going to happen. No one will make money. They’re all around Central Park. And now no one can go anywhere because there are now 100,000 horses in Central Park. It would be considered madness to do that. They wouldn’t do it. Yet when it comes to the yellow cab industry, for 50 years all we could have was 13,000 cabs, and then within a year or two we’re going to add 100,000. Let’s see how the market works on that! We know how the market works.”

zackkatz··on Apple Backs AV1: What Does This Mean for the Future of Video Codecs
This article failed to mention that Apple is a founding member of the Alliance for Open Media, the organization that released AV1.

> Founding members are Amazon, Apple, ARM, Cisco, Facebook, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix and NVIDIA. > [aomedia.org](https://aomedia.org)

I love AirTable, which operates on a similar concept.
zackkatz··on Finding the most depressing Radiohead song with R
I vote for the happiest song being Anyone Can Play Guitar from Pablo Honey. It is hopeful and encouraging. It speaks of life goals achieved.

This article demonstrates how far AI has to go.
