yzh··on Microsoft's Bing search engine blocked in China
I really hate this. Seems all good search engines are now banned in China: Google, duckduckgo, even Bing. For those of you who do not have a proper VPN and do not want to put up with Baidu's shitty search experience, I recommend searx.me.
yzh··on How to Start Learning Computer Graphics Programming
fwiw, pbrt can be read online for free since earlier last year: http://www.pbr-book.org/
yzh··on Non-Euclidean Worlds Engine [video]
I have a feeling that Jonathan Blow will enjoy playing with engine and work something brilliant on top of it.
yzh··on Smalltalk 80 – Blue Book (1983) [pdf]
You could try searching Smalltalk-80 on libgen.io. I think the other twos are both there.
yzh··on Ask HN: How is software development different in China and India?
I work at Tencent. From my observation: golang is extremely popular in China. Except that we are no different from other parts on the planet. Java, C++, python, js are popular too. Usually no Chinese will be used in the code, programmers try to use English, even if some of them wrote comments with grammar mistakes. Most internet-companies in China are using Agile dev mode by default.
yzh··on Awesome AI Infrastructures
This is created by my friend Yuduo Wu (http://www.yuduowu.com/). Really awesome work. We should have more such kind of repos that summarize resources related to ML systems and infra.
yzh··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
Well, I actually agree with you. But John Carmack's armadillo aerospace was founded 2 years before SpaceX.
yzh··on YC China and Qi Lu
Some of my Taiwanese friends would choose to base their companies at either silicon valley or mainland China, while a lot of my bay area Chinese friends (and friends who received US grad school education) would choose to base their companies in mainland China. Taiwan doesn't really have the ideal startup environment.
yzh··on YC China and Qi Lu
I think compared to pollution, political situation and education is more concerned.
yzh··on YC China and Qi Lu
I think YC China would mainly help local tech talents to launch startups with a focus on China's markets first. If you look at how many tech startups are located in Beijing (some of them are tier-one companies: Tusimple, uisee, bytedance, mobvoi, megvii, just to name a few), you would know that they have made the right choice.
yzh··on Ask HN: Are there any summer intern/full-time job for communication PhD student?
Yes I believe so, as she is currently learning python and data analysis.
yzh··on Stats on GPUs
It's been updated (with labels and data source from Wiki) and the author would like to have it pop up the name of the GPU when you mouseover too. Filed an issue: https://github.com/altair-viz/altair/issues/360
yzh··on Stats on GPUs
Some stats on GPUs over time. A cool visualization project on going.
yzh··on Facebook Said to Create Censorship Tool to Get Back into China
The question is, do people in China really need Facebook now? I used to live in China and I still have lots of connections there, none of my friends are using Facebook-like social network services. People are using Wechat (a mobile-based semi-private social network), weibo (a Twitter clone with more features), and Zhihu (a Quora clone), and a zillion live streaming share sites. All the Facebook clone sites in China are dying.

That being said, I agree that this is still an evil move for Facebook.

yzh··on Yiwu: The Chinese city where Christmas is made and sold
Just out of curiosity, is there any child labor involved in this? Also, what proportion of local population is doing this (considering both workers and business owners)? Why this city, but not other cities around? Anything special of your hometown? Thank you!
yzh··on Dijkstra's Algorithm
For those who are searching for improved Dijkstra's algorithm, delta-stepping is a good one: https://www.cs.utexas.edu/~pingali/CS395T/2012sp/papers/delt...
yzh··on Shenzhen I/O
This really reminds me of this super fun flash game Manufactoria: http://pleasingfungus.com/Manufactoria/ A Turing machine game.
yzh··on Teaching Your Computer To Play Super Mario Bros
I really wish someone could try deep neural networks on my favorite mario doujin game that combines mario with portal: http://stabyourself.net/mari0/
yzh··on A parallel implementation of gzip for modern multi-processor multi-core machines
You may find work from my colleagues interesting: Parallel Lossless Data Compression on the GPU: http://www.idav.ucdavis.edu/publications/print_pub?pub_id=10... Fast Parallel Suffix Array on the GPU: http://escholarship.org/uc/item/83r7w305 I think built on top of the second paper (suffix array paper), there should be fast compression library. We have one implementation in our library CUDPP 2.0, you can try it out if you like: https://github.com/cudpp/cudpp/blob/master/src/cudpp/app/sa_...
yzh··on A Compiler for 3D Machine Knitting
Combined with proper user body data collection techniques, this could create real customized apparel.
yzh··on Ask HN: What are examples of GitHub repositories with high code quality?
I highly recommend this gitbook to you: https://0xax.gitbooks.io/linux-insides/content/index.html
yzh··on GPUCC – An Open-Source GPGPU Compiler
Not a compiler guy but a GPU programmer. This is exciting! Attended one of the authors' lecture a while ago. Although at this point I assume gpucc would be super-optimized for deep learning (by which I mean dense matrix multiplication), this is very good for the community so that people can work on various versions that either focus on better general performance, or difference feature sets for specific applications in the future.
yzh··on What convolutional neural networks look at when they see nudity
It could be used as an NSFW content identifier, it also could be used as a fine-grained porn video classifier. At least that's what I want to use it for.
yzh··on Escher Sketch
This is cool. Reminds me of this Islamic art game too: http://www.engare.design/
yzh··on The Madness of Airline Élite Status
You guys may want to try this (haven't released anything yet, but looks promising): http://www.pointimize.com/
yzh··on List of high-quality open datasets in public domains
For the complex network part, I think the collection missed this one: http://www.networkrepository.com/ The site itself is a collection of several publicly available network datasets.
yzh··on Facebook made its Android app crash to test user loyalty?
It's true and I find that feature very annoying. Of course I can turn it off, but they shouldn't turn it on by default IMO.
yzh··on Twitter Considering 10,000-Character Limit for Tweets
How about not setting limit to any length, but using a text summary generator to reduce the tl;dr version to 140 characters?
yzh··on How to Partition a Graph When You Think Like a Vertex [pdf]
Thanks for the info!
yzh··on Bing Goes Full-On Censorship in English Search Results Within China
I cannot believe after all these years China is still banning the whole site instead of using some keyword or content-based method. Not that those methods are right, but at least it would save a lot of programmers and researchers time. How can people make progress on anything related to scientific research without the help of Wikipedia? seven years ago I was a college student in China and I sure remembered how I have to set up VPN to check on wikipedia pages for my thesis. And needless to say, the school doesn't have the up-to-date paper collection from either IEEE or ACM. I have to directly visit the author's sites. I really wish the government could realize how harmful this is to innovation...
