ywvcbk··on Why the Guardian is no longer posting on X
Were they? They [Guardian] are now claiming that both groups are being treated the same when they were clearly claiming that that wasn’t the case earlier?

Which exact groups they are talking about doesn’t really matter for this specific argument.

ywvcbk··on Using BenQ's latest 32" 4k monitor (RD320U) which is aimed at programming
Why not? I certainly get 16:10 or even 3:2 on laptops but for a desktop just get a taller display (if there is truly not enough vertical space on 32” screen...).
ywvcbk··on DeepComputing: Early Access Program for RISC-V Mainboard for Framework Laptop 13
> will cost a lot more.

Presumably everyone buying this thing would already have (or need) a proper PC/Mac to use alongside it.

ywvcbk··on Apple M4 Mac Mini with macOS vs. Intel / AMD with Ubuntu Linux Performance
Was there a single laptop chip included in the benchmark?

They are comparing a 5w CPU with 80-200w ones.. which is entirely pointless.

ywvcbk··on Apple M4 Mac Mini with macOS vs. Intel / AMD with Ubuntu Linux Performance
Might just as well compare it with EPYC/Xeon.. would be about as meaningful.

If we just ignore price and power usage entirely it’s pretty pointless.

Of course Studio and the Mac Pro probably don’t really offer such great value as the Mini

ywvcbk··on AMD's CPU sales are miles better than Intel
> successful than 99.9% of companies out there

Depends on how you define that, I’d bet that 99.9% of all companies aren’t losing billions of $ every quarter while their revenue is declining even more. Also while simultaneously failing in pretty much every market segment they operate in..

ywvcbk··on AMD's CPU sales are miles better than Intel
> and in TOP500 lists and national supercomputing centers

Why would that be particularly relevant when comparing the performance of specific individual chips?

ywvcbk··on AMD's CPU sales are miles better than Intel
> relatively recent old PC,

They have a new socket so even if you bought a motherboard a few months ago that wouldn’t work.

ywvcbk··on AMD's CPU sales are miles better than Intel
I think they meant that compared to specific chips.

AMDs x3D chips are exceptionally good for gaming but are relatively very poor for MT “productivity” stuff (this gen seems to be a lot better at that, though).

13/14th gen also seemingly also had somewhat better price/performance overall than AM5 chips.

ywvcbk··on AMD's CPU sales are miles better than Intel
It’s kind of hard to reconcile that with their love for unnecessary and over-bearing bureaucracy, though..
ywvcbk··on Review of Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World
> nothing to do

Income certainly has, though.

And it of course depends on the sector etc. but salaries are generally comparatively low and stagnant in much of Europe.

ywvcbk··on The Long Road to End Tuberculosis
> I would guess, in 2024 Covid killed more than 1.2 million people

Why? Seems extremely speculative.

ywvcbk··on Mind-Bending Soviet Era Oil Rig City on the Caspian Sea
By the same measurement there are no skyscrapers in the US and everyone lives in farmsteads because the average population density just 38/km2?

Singapore is ~56x smaller than the Netherlands which makes it hardly comparable..

ywvcbk··on Trump wins presidency for second time
That was not what I meant, though.
ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
IMHO usually they conflict with each other more often than not.
ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
Did you paste the wrong link? That’s a population growth map, not immigration specifically? Also it’s from 2022…

I mean you might be right or wrong but declining population in California doesn’t mean that a lot of immigrants are moving there (and I of course wasn’t talking about all immigrants in general but rather people who might be on HN which aren’t exactly a random sample).

> Hoping someone is dead is very much in poor taste imo

Is it? Much more extreme rhetoric is perfectly normalized and accepted these days in the US these days..

ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
> not acknowledging anything unsound about

Except the top comments are the complete opposite of that…

ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
Most people aren’t moving into any of the red states, though (maybe Texas)?

And with the all states right thing that they are pushing hopefully Trump will be dead by them time they have enough political capital to restrict stuff on a Federal level.

ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
> he doesn’t want a nation-wide ban

I guess he’s too old now but it still must be pretty personal to him.

ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
Governments should always be primarily rational and utilitarian rather than ideological.
ywvcbk··on German coalition government collapses
Virginia and Maryland were on the brink of invading DC (had the government continued to resist deploying the National Guard and the riot got even more out of hand) with all the bizarre consequences of that…

To be fair it’s not like the mob was that determined and capable to actually murder Pence etc. (at least there weren’t any clear signs of it). They scattered immediately after the first guns were fired (I mean those close enough to witness it). So more people might have died but it would have primarily been the rioters rather than anyone else..

US has generally done alright? It comes down to who the immigrants are and how much money are they making. If they are in high value industries like tech how can they not generate any value?
ywvcbk··on Trump wins presidency for second time
> there is no left in america

There is, though? It’s just no represented at all because of FTPT there is based no constituency where it can get 50%. Usually not even in Democrat primaries.

ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
Intel has a high PE because they its barely profitable (in fact they operate at a loss currently). Nvidia because investors expect it to continue growing at an extremely fast pace. These are fundamentally different (even if they had the same PE it wouldn’t be comparable).
ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
> doesn't leave a large market for intel.

And yet Intel still had 3/4 of datacenter the market by volume at least a few months ago…

Of course they are struggling with maintaining their margins.

ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
Intel is not on the brink of bankruptcy, though. Unless things change drastically Nvidia would have a much harder time trying to buy them than they did with ARM.
ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
We unless you have enough money to actually bribe the FTC and the European Commission (and equivalent in China and UK) then no, there are things that matter about as much or more than money.
ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
> inescapable psychological aspect to the Dow that is unique.

Sounds about the same as:

> that is reported on because people talk about it because it's reported on.

The unique aspect is that a randomly weighted index is just outright stupid however you look at it.

ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
> To replicate the performance of the DJIA

Why would you want to though? The ratios are entirely random.

ywvcbk··on Nvidia to join Dow Jones Industrial Average, replacing Intel
> that if industrial companies are doing well

Except it might be very hard to tell that because it’s effectively randomly weighted.

Caterpillar almost has the same weight as MS and double that of Amazon.
