yumaikas··on Nim: Scripting Ease in a Compiled Language
For me, I'm seeing compile times averaging around 5-10 seconds, with outlier builds taking up to 40 seconds if the files in question aren't cached.

It feels faster than Go, but I think part of that is down to Nim's compile output being verbose by default.

yumaikas··on Nim: Scripting Ease in a Compiled Language
Author of the article here, feel free to ask me anything if you're wanting to understand something about the article, or about Nim. I am not the author of Nim.

I also want to point out that Nim does have an IRC channel (#nim) on freenode, which was helpful for understanding some of these things.

yumaikas··on Do you have a problem? Write a compiler
So how did you use globbing on XML? Was there an existing library for it, or did you write your own?
yumaikas··on Instagram influencers: Have we stopped believing?
Would you be willing to explain this a little bit more?
yumaikas··on How many .com domain names are unused?
And they would keep the web from being usable by anyone that is not in it for business, but wants to put up a site.

$20 a year for a domain plus $50 a year is an easy price for getting a server to experiment with. If things cost 10 times that, it would price out a lot of activity at the margins of the web.

yumaikas··on Stacked Diffs versus Pull Requests
How does this workflow work when there are 3 commits that need to be applied in order (A, B, and C), when C gets approved from a code-review standpoint before A and B?
yumaikas··on Ask HN: What is your best advice for a junior software developer?
If you can, find a copy of "A Philosophy of Software Design", and read the whole thing.

It'll give you a lot of higher level things to think about as you're diving deep into your first tech stack.

yumaikas··on Show HN: Sublime Merge – A Git client from the makers of Sublime Text
ConEmu's performance for TUI apps like vim or weechat+ssh is not great.

Not a factor if you don't use those sorts of applications, but a bit of a deal breaker if you do.

yumaikas··on Show HN: Sublime Merge – A Git client from the makers of Sublime Text
Where are the various options and the like documented?

I'd like to add a custom command for pulling a specified branch from a remote, and given the extensibility of Sublime Text, I think there's a way to do that, but I'm not yet sure how to find it all?

Also, count me as a vote for a high performance Sublime Terminal. I'd pay for that in a heartbeat.

yumaikas··on Notes on “A Philosophy of Software Design”
I've yet to finish this book yet, but it's definitely not just for undergrads. There is a lot of things in it that seem obvious when stated, but are either good reminders, or genuinely well stated language for a domain.

One example that stands out to me is deep vs shallow classes.

yumaikas··on Show HN: A single command terminal configuration installer
One better, I can link you to it (I had written my own version at work, but ran across this and forked it to switch out the command names, since someone else had done it alreay)

yumaikas··on Show HN: A single command terminal configuration installer
I've found that using a bookmarking system helps cut down the use of cd a lot. That's the latest addition I've made to my terminal setup, and it's helped a lot.
yumaikas··on Mastodon Is Better Than Twitter: Elevator Pitch
I get the feeling that regardless of how much more growth Mastodon gets, it's going to be around and in active use for a long time to come, if only because it's provided a space that is meaningfully different to Twitter.

Will it be the biggest social phenomenon? Probably not. But it already has the critical mass to keep funding its continued development, and lot of interesting voices, if you know where to look.

yumaikas··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
Thanks for explaining that.
yumaikas··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
> Users increasingly want to talk to businesses the same way they talk with their friends and family.

Citation needed, IMO. I hardly speak for most users, but if I had to guess, it's far more that businesses want to speak to users the same way that users talk to their friends and family, rather than the other way around.

Not that this doesn't sound pretty neat, but I'm super curious where the demand from users to connect with businesses via WhatsApp is.

yumaikas··on Inventing a Language, from the Guy Who Made Dothraki (2015)
Can you provide a source for this? I'm very curious, as I grew up speaking Tok Pisin, and played some Riven, and looking up cutscenes online I can't make sense of any of the Rivenese (well, the foreign language bits, I don't know if it's Rivenese or not), at least not in https://youtu.be/-rjfyfuijrc or https://youtu.be/smOzKs1hauM.
yumaikas··on Learn how to design large-scale systems
So there's a few features that I'd like to see at some point: Some way of marking "new comments" when I revisit a thread. Rescanning HN threads just to see what's changed since I last looked at one is kinda frustrating. (I realize you're not @dang, but posting this here just as an idea)
yumaikas··on Ask HN: Are there any programmers here?
Nah, this is a site for Hackers, not programmers. We break stuff here, not build it.
yumaikas··on How 'DevOps' Is Killing the Developer (2014)
Can we get a (2014) on this?
yumaikas··on Stopping the RSI pain that almost destroyed my programming career (2016)
I don't have citations at the moment, but I have heard of gluten as having inflammatory effects on the body, which could certainly make RSI worse.
yumaikas··on Lisp Game Jam 2018
I'd recommend Fennel and Love2D, if you're ok with picking up a bit of Lua, or if you already know it.
yumaikas··on Going gray for smartphone addiction
For windows users, there's stuff like http://arcanesanctum.net/negativescreen/, that might be interesting to investigate and/or integrate into this.
yumaikas··on Going gray for smartphone addiction
They provide workable instructions for creating this effect on Andriod and iOS, as it doesn't require an app as such.

If an app does come out of this, it'll probably be more about setting greyscale for different other apps.

yumaikas··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
I don't believe God's anger and wrath in the Old or New testaments to have been unrighteous or wrong. There's a lot more discussion there than I have time for right now, however. Perhaps we can resume this discussion at a later date elsewhere.
yumaikas··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
To be clear, there's a lot more to God in the Old Testament than anger, even in those instances. There's grief, especially in the flood, and in the case of Adam and Eve, God provided for their nakedness with better clothes then they had made.

To say nothing of the promise and provision provided to nations throughout the Old Testament, the grace given to non-Israelites by keeping them from accidentally violating the marriages of Abram and Issac when both men lied about their wives out of fear.

Remembering only the anger of God in the Old Testament is a common, but incomplete reading. There is also grace there.

You can easily set up Mattermost with a subdomain by using nginx or your proxy of choice, which is only a little extra work, and with LE, can also be easily secured. This is what I did for Mattermost at my previous job, and it worked quite well.
yumaikas··on IRC necromancy
There is still #xkcd on foonetic, #ludumdare on afternet, as well as #lobsters and #proglangdesign on freenode. They may not be active 24/7, but there are good conversationa there if you lurk for awhile.
yumaikas··on How super are those pricey 'superfoods'?
What I'm trying to get at is that coconut water itself isn't some "waste product". Granted, it be might have been an unused material in some coconut processing pipelines (though I'd be skeptical of that, since anyone that spends time with coconuts knows there's some good stuff in there).

Fresh, for me, refers to having coconut water where the coconut was cut off the tree minutes prior to being opened up. I don't know enough about how Zico and the like are process to speak with any intelligence as to how it might affect the end-product.

EDIT: that being said, I wouldn't pay $6/liter for coconut water. That's overpriced by a long shot, IMO.

yumaikas··on How super are those pricey 'superfoods'?
Coconut water, when it's actually fresh (I don't know about after packing/processing), is actually pretty good for drinking, especially since it has various nutrients you don't get out of regular water. Fresh, it isn't something I'd call a "waste byproduct".
