ystad··on Show HN: Go-kratos – Golang microservices framework
I keep wondering.. there's a bunch of microservice frameworks in go - a few mentioned in the Readme of this project. I'd be interested to know what folks use and why?
ystad··on Seeding by Ceding
In my opinion:

A progressive tax structure would have made this the people's money to spend. You spend it on what seems fit to the people (via your elected representative) - health care for example.

You have lost control of your money This money is now beholden to a group of individuals who can decide what works best for them. It could be malaria or it could be building a spaceship to Mars. The decision is not yours.

ystad··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
It's exploitation- people are attracted by $15/hour work. Unfortunately, the work in unsustainable on your body. Eventually you go on disability. This seems to be biggest complaint [1]

ystad··on Launch HN: Runops (YC W21) – A better cloud shell for production apps
The information on https://runops.io/ is light, does not have information on examples, workflow etc.

what is the setup like (is it cloud hosted or hosted by onself in a cloud). Is your code open source? how is authn/authz if I want to use this?

ystad··on Ask HN: Should I leave my job at a FAANG to pursue a PhD?
My raw thoughts

phd in systems engineering is inherently unnecessary unless you want to spend time in academia.

This is my opinion with first hand experience working on a phD and working in a FAANG.

If you want to go deep into systems and make something at it - I would recommend a PhD in.a top tier university like Berkeley otherwise it's not worth leaving your job. A phd from a top tier university is required for a good academic career.

If it's just interesting work-- You can work on far more interesting systems work if you navigate to the right team in google for example.

PhD is a 5 year ish commitment and it's better to do it early in your life if you want to go to academia.

PhD dropout rates are also high, it's okay here too there's a lot that you learn anyway and the FAANG company is not going anywhere :). They're always happy to have you back...

I would wrap this up by reading this article by Prof. DesJardin How to be a good graduate student

Hope this helps

I think the definition of 'progress' is nuanced, since it is is inherently unsustainable. I think our existence in general is destructive to the environment around us.
ystad··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Dr Andrew Ng's courses on machine learning and deep learning

Beautiful explained lectures. I can't believe what a great instructor he is. I feel he truly embodies the Feynman learning technique.

ystad··on Ask HN: Strategies to avoid a toxic job? What are the warning signs?

Try to find people in your network who work for the company before you join to get a better idea of the real state of things

ystad··on Ask HN: What personal checking account are you using?
I use my local credit union primarily since they are "supposed" to be non-profit, lower interest rates and fees. I used the term supposed, since there are a lot of variance. I was thinking about Chime too

Why do you need a bank API?

ystad··on Ask HN: I'm quitting my job, will create a game – any advice?
I'm my opinion - 18 months may not cut it. I would consider 3 years, You need thinking time to develop your idea, games, time for pivoting.

You will have roadblocks, but enjoy the journey. There are many creative ways to sustain, write about your progress.

ystad··on Ask HN: I'm quitting my job, will create a game – any advice?

ystad··on Ask HN: Losing all interest in programming, what now?
Some thoughts - we are in a pandemic, everyone and their friend are stressed and disengaged. Don’t be hard on yourself

- Chip away at your problem or task slowly. Celebrate tiny wins, I just got that tiny function to work, YaY

- A grand project takes time. One often underestimates the time needed to do a task. Break it into really tiny bite sized items.

- consider a different measure of success. Take time to understand deeply the root cause of all failures. Write about it in a daily journal.

- Creativity takes time and effort. Roadblocks are common, Enjoy the process.

ystad··on Distributed Systems Reading List
Yes. The area is fairly broad. In my opinion - I think the question to ask for is: Do you have the distributed systems mindset? Not Are you an expert on Distributed Systems

ystad··on How I Collected a Debt from an Unscrupulous Merchant
Very well done. Personally, I believe that resolving issues in a calm organized and firm way helps you as well.

I recall one of my bosses telling me if you want to fire off an angry response, close your computer and take a walk outside. This works, I would come back and write a calm but firm email. Angry responses typically do not help.

I typically hate responses on twitter
