yobert··on Infinitown
Really cool demo!
yobert··on My Clients, the Liars
How should a public defender behave? He's doing what his job is supposed to be.
yobert··on My Clients, the Liars
That Eleven Magic Words article got me totally hooked on his writing. I found it very powerful too. There's so much of our society that I know nothing about, and he sheds so much light on it. I feel like he tells you the truth.
yobert··on Ask HN: Is Vim Dead?
I still just use regular vim/gvim all day long. Haven't looked at neovim. I bet as long as distro maintainers keep the original alive, it will stick around.
yobert··on A game magazine that spent two years taunting a Final Fantasy VIII hater
The fake hair on the screen totally got me!!!
yobert··on Tesla Cybertruck may have a rust problem
Seems like if they went with a different language, the truck would Go better.
yobert··on Tailwind color palette generator
Really I'm just surprised they haven't done the math on those color blindness types and just added that to the WCAG algorithm. Maybe someone has already?
yobert··on OpenBSD System-Call Pinning
> The direct-syscalls-inside-the-binary model used by go (and only go, noone else in the history of the unix software does this) provided the biggest resistance against this effort".

I know this annoys unix people. But I have to say I actually really like that Go shakes this up. I believe the C function monopoly just isn't healthy for things. You should be able to make a new completely unrelated language. The Go developers were the first in a long time to do this, not because they are stupid, but because they were ambitious.

yobert··on Paul Erdős, the most prolific mathematician
To me the greatest contribution of Erdos is the social aspect of mathematics. He physically shared his enthusiasm with so many people. He inspires me to work together with others, and to leave your ego behind. He inspired so many with his true love of math.
yobert··on Deadcode: Finding unreachable functions in Go
Really it needs to scan my coworkers commits as well. Can't be too careful.
yobert··on I Just Need a Programmer
My favorite response is to tell them I'll look at it after they have sketched what every single screen looks like, with every single button accounted for and reasoned about. They agree to it, and I have yet to see a finished proposal.
yobert··on Some might not see how much work it was to maintain xorg server
X11 is a protocol too :p
yobert··on Python Is Easy. Go Is Simple. Simple != Easy
I know it sounds funny, but I have used the built in "net/http" in probably fifty projects now, and not a single one of them needed a min/max function.
yobert··on Firefox Is Going to Try and Ship with Wayland Enabled by Default
Wayland is a piece of the linux desktop software stack. If you're on a Mac or Windows, it won't mean anything to you. Linux historically has used X11 for drawing the desktop. Wayland is a replacement for X11. It's big news because it's been a long time coming, and fixes a lot of longstanding issues. Unfortunately it also creates some new issues (screen sharing, hot key apps, etc), but they're being actively worked on and are very close to being completely solved.
yobert··on How did people deal with punch cards?
Awesome!
yobert··on How did people deal with punch cards?
My dads collection of punch cards are a favorite childhood toy of my family. You fold some of them in half and those can be walls/corners, and the flat ones are roofs, and you make these giant multi-story play houses out of them and then perch your lego people everywhere, and then collapse them by shooting with rubber bands. Such a fun memory.

Now I look at them and amazed to see some are filled with my dad's FORTRAN programs. It's so fun.

yobert··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
I always struggle playing games on my Mac because they keep updating the OS to disallow third party tools to disable mouse smoothing. Mouse smoothing is the bane of my existence.
yobert··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
I don't think people play counterstrike because they are cheap. A lot of my money goes to computers, and I still end up playing a lot of counterstrike. It's because it's fun.
yobert··on PostgreSQL 16
You might just need to run:

    alter database mystuff refresh collation version;
yobert··on Go 1.21 will (probably) download newer toolchains on demand by default
I think the part they take issue with that might surprise you is if you decide to start using a dependency, and that dependency declares in it's go.mod file (not yours) that it needs a newer version than yours, and that triggers a download and toolchain swap.

I think it's... Iffy. I'd prefer it to fail and for it to be up to me to upgrade, personally.

yobert··on Why Perl?
The perl interpreter is written in C, so that should be a good hint. :)
yobert··on OpenGL 3.1 on Asahi Linux
This information is on their website wiki. See https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Feature-Support
yobert··on Linux tool to show progress for cp, mv, dd
I'd never heard of that game. Trying it now and it's great fun. Really enjoying the soundtrack.
yobert··on Career advice no one gave me: Give a lot of notice when you quit
I gave 2 years notice at a software job I'd been at for 10 years. It was great! I said I was going to go do something new when I turned 30. The boss appreciated it and we had a lot of time to adjust the direction of the company in the meantime.

This was at a very small, tight-knit place though. I'd never do this at a big company.

yobert··on SQL:2023 is finished: Here is what's new
Some of this has already implemented in PostgreSQL 9.6! lpad / ltrim, for example.
yobert··on We achieved a 6-fold increase in Podman startup speed
You'll need to replace your kubernator!
yobert··on Society's Technical Debt and Software's Gutenberg Moment
I always think of technical debt being a case of too much software, not too little.
yobert··on Marion Smith, the world’s most prolific cave explorer, dies at 80
His life was very much valued. Reading about that tragedy, I don't think there is any way a drill would have helped. He was so far down the cave, and even just the entrance to that cave is very small. There was no way to get equipment to him in time. Everyone involved tried their absolute best, but there was no solution to even ask for. If there was a solution that would have wrecked the cave and would have saved him, they would probably have taken it, but there was no way to operate on the rock above him without burying him.
yobert··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
I loved it! Just to represent the other side :)
yobert··on Show HN: I finished v5 of a JVM framework I've spent spent half a decade making
I used PostgreSQL for my wedding website. People could RSVP, say how many were coming, volunteer for support roles since we did too much of it ourselves, etc.

It was overkill and I loved it.
