ymbeld··on YouTubers have to declare ads. Why doesn't anyone else? [video]
Pretty overrated.

I think advertisement should be banned outright. Wouldn’t miss it.

Not a strawman at all. It is quite common for people with a post-secondary education to think that they have fundamentally better critical-thinking skills and are much less prone to propaganda, just because they have sat in lecture halls for 4–9 years. And you don’t exactly dispute or disprove that, degree or not.

I personally expect people with post-secondary education to be more ideological than people without one. After all, they’ve been in some kind of educational institution for longer...

ymbeld··on The U.S.' vaccine rollout is world-beating
I haven’t published a stance.
ymbeld··on The U.S.' vaccine rollout is world-beating
The great divide: the ones who think America is Great, and the ones who merely think that their own tertiary education group is Great.
ymbeld··on The U.S.' vaccine rollout is world-beating
I don’t think this statement by the author makes much sense in this context. The author states later that “the U.S. system of public-private partnership has proven its worth once again”, but one is not taught to expect much at all from the public sector in America; one is on the contrary told that the government can only make mistakes and that the private sector is more efficient and fault-tolerant.

If anything this “public-private partnership” goes against what Americans have been taught for the last half-century.

ymbeld··on “Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain?
> They are uneducated, so they don't know what they deserve. They are uneducated, so they don't know what they deserve.

You don’t need a formal education to know whether you are being taken advantage of. Only people with formal education believe such lies.

ymbeld··on “Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain?
The employer setting most of the terms is the reality for most of the working class.
ymbeld··on “Location-Based Pay” – Who are we to complain?
Basically “be careful what you wish for”. Really? I can stop capitalist globalization by merely asking inconvienent questions? Will Nike forego their profit margins by moving production close to wherever their HQ is? Somehow I doubt I have that power.
ymbeld··on Ziglings: Learn the Zig programming language by fixing tiny broken programs
I don’t know. I think MetaOcaml is strict about inspecting Code terms like Code (1 + 2) and Code 3 (as far as I remember it is not allowed). So no, I don’t think you can distinguish between them.
ymbeld··on Ziglings: Learn the Zig programming language by fixing tiny broken programs
“Refuse to compile” makes it sound like the compiler is able to but unwilling to compile the code. It could very well be that the parser doesn’t recognize tab as a valid token.
ymbeld··on Ziglings: Learn the Zig programming language by fixing tiny broken programs
It doesn’t seem as general as MetaOcaml. Just two-stage evaluation, and without quote and splice.
ymbeld··on Ziglings: Learn the Zig programming language by fixing tiny broken programs
The term partial evaluation tends to be used for research that focuses on automatic evaluation of the static part of the program. When considered as metaprogramming the research would probably discuss type-checking + evaluation as two-stage evaluation, falling under the general umbrella of multi-stage programming.
ymbeld··on Linux Memory Management FAQ
Seriously though that’s a good idea. Might be better to just disable swap. :) Well, at least until I go out and buy more RAM.
ymbeld··on Linux Memory Management FAQ
I don’t know what true OOM means, but my desktop has crashed I think at least three times in the last four months and the console said “OOM killer”. About 15GB of usable RAM, 2GB swap drive. I just have to have the usual applications open plus another browser in addition to Firefox, namely Chrome. (But naturally I don’t try to actively reproduce the behavior since I usually have better things to do than wait 10 minutes from everything becoming unresponsive -- even switching from the graphical session to a console -- to the OOM killer finally deciding to kill Chrome.) And I don’t run any virtual machines, just a big, fat IDE and stuff like that.
