yla92··on Ask HN: Books you read in 2016?
I've read about 20 books this year and most of them are fictions. I am a late comer in reading English books. At this stage of period, I still finding joy in reading fictions books than non-fictions. I feel that I should be reading more non-fictions but I can't help.

Some of the books I've read this year and recommend are

1. When Breath Becomes Air - Paul Kalanithi (Found this book through the author's essay (basically, an abstract from the book) in NY Times. I love it. It is the story about the life of the neurosurgeon who was battling with his cancer.)

2. The Bridge to Brilliance - Nadia Lopez (Found this book from Humans of New York page. It is the story about a school principal trying to open up a school, getting school and other struggles along the way.)

3. The Phoenix Project - I think HN audience would know it. Fun read.

4. Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande (This is the book I've been meaning to read but only did it awhile ago. It's beautifully written. It opens up my minds about aging and the struggles that elder people face it. It also reminds me that it is most important that one gets to enjoy life till it ends.)

The other books I read are 5 books of Haruki Murakami. Among them, I really enjoyed Wind Up Bird Chronicle and After Dark a lot.

My Goodreads for "read-2016" (although I am hoping to read a book before end of the year) is at https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/22920556?shelf=read-20....

yla92··on A Fortran Web Framework
It seems to be back now.

Fun fact : I informed the author (which I'd a good fortune to get to know him for some time) this morning (east time zone) that his project is (again) on the front page on HN. He was in the air on his way to Taiwan. We both wished it doesn't break but it seems like it did and he restarted it again.

yla92··on New XPS 15 Laptop
I am also on 9550 with Ubuntu 16.04. I upgraded RAM to 32GB. I mostly do Android development (gradle and Android Studio eat a huge amount of memory). I've run into a few weird issues with different version of Linux kernel. Some kernel version caused no sound at all. This is such a common topics among Ubuntu users and there are so many solutions about that. I've tried most of them (solutions around alsamixer and pulseaudio) only using certain version of kernel works for me.

I am curious which linux kernel version people (and your co-worker) are using though.

Through angel.co link, I realise that Sequoia Capital is major investor in them. I can't help but wonder how Sequoia Capital has a share in majority of exists/current "unicorn" companies.
yla92··on Miyazaki Tribute
Wow. This is such an excellent work. Thank you so much for it.

This is unrelated. I recently went and watched Markoto Shinkai's latest film : Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.). Like his previous works, it's extraordinary. I encourage everyone to give it a try.

While Markoto Shinkai won't be Miyazaki, his work are pretty good and he's still very young so I really hope to see him making great ones like Miyazaki.

yla92··on Seven years of Go
Not exactly a book but Go By Example[0] is an excellent when I start learning Go. The examples are clear and one example focuses on just one thing. I find myself going back there to refer to the example whenever I need.

yla92··on Show HN: Make an app by adding JSON to this app
This is really great one. Shameless plug, we've built similar (but smaller) concept for the filter form of our apps[0] (cross platform, natively for Web, Android and iOS) mainly because we were tired of having to change the search filter form fields and logics in every app update. Now, we just have to change the configuration and the filter form changes instantly.

yla92··on Show HN: Make an app by adding JSON to this app
There is something called json2view[0] for android which allows you to render the views according the specific json format. Definitely not as powerful as Jasonette but could be useful sometimes.

Quite possibly. At the bottom, it says "inspired by hatnote" :)
yla92··on Realm Mobile Platform – Realtime Sync Plus Fully Open Source Database
Congrats on the big release.

I remember I was using very early version of Realm in the one of the Android apps I was working on at that time. It was not working properly for me, unfortunately. Random Segmentation faults and limitations that one have to use the POJO extended from the RealmObject. So, I eventually switched back to SQLite (plus ORMLite).

I have seen a lot of changes and now I think I would definitely consider giving it a try.

One question that I have is even though it's nice to have self-hosted Realm Object Server, are there any plans or timeline that it's going to be open-sourced ?

yla92··on Ask HN: What book have you given as a gift?
I have given Humans of New York book as a gift to a friend of mine and now preparing another one to another friend.

Mainly because I think the book has so much great quality photo essays, worth keeping it for a long time, sit down, flip it through from time to time and enjoy the beautiful stories.

yla92··on Xiaomi’s first laptop is a Macbook Air rival
I can second that. I am using XPS 15 and dual booted Ubuntu along side Windows 10. On Windows, some apps icons and texts are pixelated because of the 4k display (it reminds me of the time when the very first Retina Macbook Pro came out). Aside from that, pretty solid and fast laptop, given the size and the spec (can go up to 32 GB RAM + i7 CPU).
yla92··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2016?
Yeah. I think that's the book I mentioned above. Thanks nonetheless!
yla92··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2016?
Haskell. I am currently reading haskellbook.com but I am kind of stuck with the first chapter about Lambda Calculus. If anyone knows a good advice/link/tutorial about it, that would be great!
yla92··on Oracle wants $9.3B for Google’s use of Java in Android
I don't see Android team itself is going to switch to Go or Javascript for android. Otherwise, I would say Kotlin[0] would be a better alternative to Java.

yla92··on Myanmar was off the grid for decades, is catching up fast
Taunggyi is a lovely place and it's one of the cleanest (and large) city in the country. There are a small town near Taunggyi called 'Kalaw' and it's be great if she could spend sometime there too. It's such a nice weather right now, too.

The change is very quick as you mentioned. The SIM cards became so cheap and the speed became much faster than before. So, even to local people like us, it's amazing.

yla92··on Myanmar was off the grid for decades, is catching up fast
I am a Burmese(Myanmar) guy living in the country. I could say that majority of the people use Facebook when they use the Internet. One of the thing that has been bothering me is that Facebook is cooperating with one of the local telco (Telenor) and did a program called Facebook zero[0] where the users of the aforementioned telco can use the Facebook freely. It is good and bad, I would say. Users would love it, no doubt but I don't want to see that Facebook is dominating the market and there won't be any other advantages to others, even to local startups.

yla92··on AWS Device Farm
Pretty interesting. Now, we have more choices. The other day, I've found this project on Github called OpenSTF[1] which allows you to set up your own devices labs. It's pretty interesting and I've got to try yet. Generally, I'd prefer to set up my own device labs rather than testing with 3rd party services. It depends on your target market. For us, the apps we made are target for the local market (people and devices). And the phones sold in our market are different with the phone sold in States and I don't expect to have some China devices to be available on 3rd party services.
