yjftsjthsd-h··on The newest ESP32 can run Linux and it's getting close to a Raspberry Pi
> There’s no way a multi-user OS such as Linux can be as efficient as a firmware blob that does one thing

Yes, obviously. The advantage is in how easy it is to port software to the board, and how much work you need to do to get any given amount of functionality.

> Because nobody uses it except a handful of uber-nerds who can put up with wasting hours of time for "altruism".

What? I'm not sure how you would manage to waste hours installing a single app and then using it to install other apps, and I'm not using it because of "altruism" (what does that even mean?), I'm using it because it's the best way to get apps.

> You should be able to just download an app. And Grandma should be able to do it.

> There's nothing insecure about it in a world of sandboxing, permissions, scanning, blacklisting, etc. When the tech giants are more than happy to sell ads to malware, you know their "safety" stance is just economic moat protectionism.

Even if you 100% trust Android's sandboxing and permissions, which is... not a choice I would personally make, I like it when my apps don't have scams or ads internally, either. I'm not worried about Grandma downloading any app off F-Droid; I am a little concerned about what happens if she can download any app being pushed by any random website.

I use F-Droid precisely because I don't want that. When https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38505229 happened - and when the same thing happens again in the future, because it will - I explicitly want F-Droid doing some basic due diligence on updates before shipping them to me. Cutting out the middleman is the opposite of what I want.

yjftsjthsd-h··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
Alright, what would it take to make a completely open source firmware for the pi? I think there was some prior effort that got discontinued...
yjftsjthsd-h··on Nobody pays for FOSS, we can force them to
Okay, then sell it until you make a million bucks then open source it.

I broadly approve, but why Kubuntu? Isn't it headless?

Xeyes is a useful diagnostic tool. (This isn't even just a joke.)
yjftsjthsd-h··on Telling a Computer to Do Things
Yes, I would say exactly that. Other languages are of course capable of doing all the things that shell does, but in my experience they really suck at doing it in anything resembling an ergonomic and concise way.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
Wouldn't symlinking it be faster and use fewer tokens?

IME it's generally trivial for x86 Chromebooks, but still hit-and-miss for ARM.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing

yjftsjthsd-h··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I expected F-Droid to be slower... Though I feel like outright rejection is worse.
yjftsjthsd-h··on The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week
Is that 2.24.1 which was successfully published on F-Droid on Sept 2? If so that's... Interesting. And useful.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Leaving Linux
> The reason I left Linux was because I didn't want to be associated with the high-ranking developers that openly abuse and demean others with unprofessional attitudes for decades on end with impunity.

Fair enough. Since that obviously rules out anything touched by Apple or Microsoft, what did you end up on? I guess the Haiku folks are pretty nice...

yjftsjthsd-h··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Which is why ZFS reserves "slop space" to make sure that doesn't happen, instead of defaulting to making it easy for users to corner themselves like that.
yjftsjthsd-h··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Yes, it adds some overhead, but it's fine IME. Granted, it helps that compression can significantly speed up performance. (I was very confused the first time I saw ZFS reading data faster than its drives were physically capable of, because it turned out the CPU could decompress faster than the drives could read)
yjftsjthsd-h··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Its native encryption has something of a poor history
yjftsjthsd-h··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
Who said anything about storage servers? I'm using zfs on laptops and desktops right now because I want data checksums and a filesystem that doesn't have a history of breaking horribly (I dropped btrfs after the second time it hosed my rootfs). Given the license issue with zfs - and in particular, the technical fallout like needing dkms - I'd be very pleased to replace it.
yjftsjthsd-h··on How much of F-Droid is LLM generated?
> This would be the only privileged code in my operating system

What does that mean? Are you building a system without a root user or something?

yjftsjthsd-h··on GEFS on OpenBSD: A Early Preview
From https://orib.dev/gefs.pdf -

> While snapshot consistency is useful to keep data consistent, disks often fail over time. In order to detect corruption, block pointers contain a hash of the data that they point at. If corrupted data is returned by the underlying storage medium, this is detected via block hashes. And if a programmer error causes the file system to write garbage to disk, this can often be caught early. The corruption is reported, and the damaged data may then be recovered from backups, RAID restoration, or some other means.

Okay! It's got CoW, snapshots, and data checksums. Therefore, it's good enough to compete with ZFS while being way smaller and permissively licensed. Now I just want it ported to Linux and the other BSDs:)

yjftsjthsd-h··on Ubuntu 26.10 completes transition to Rust-based coreutils

yjftsjthsd-h··on TailTalk: A modern async user space AppleTalk stack with Rust and Tokio
In light of https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Drops-AppleTalk , I'm a big fan of replacing the functionality in userspace:) (I've similarly thought that it would be helpful to port as many of Linux's filesystems to FUSE so when they get dropped users can just switch to that)
yjftsjthsd-h··on Homebrew 7.0.0
NixOS is an open source project that runs great on my 2013 Dell laptop. I think the real point of distinction is that brew depends on Apple's OS and SDK, which somewhat ties their hands, while other OSs don't.

yjftsjthsd-h··on On Binary Translation and Its Consequences
I was under the impression that race-to-idle made "fast" a significant factor in "power efficient"? Obviously needs software to not be terrible and needs to be able to scale the back down, but still.
