yjftsjthsd-h··on Docker has always used microVMs (well since 2016)
Yes, and this article is about Docker Desktop running it in a VM with its own kernel.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Docker has always used microVMs (well since 2016)
Most of those are shared kernel, though, which is very much what you want to avoid if security is a primary goal.

> What if I told you that Docker Desktop has always used microVMs?

Then I would say your title is wildly misleading.

yjftsjthsd-h··on FTL: A new operating system for clouds
So it's a microkernel...ish? And it runs Linux programs and supports enough features to serve its own website. Excellent; I hope it takes off.

If an attacker compromises the server and gets hashes, yes it could matter.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Turbo Haskell
> THC now implements every one of GHC 9.14.1’s prim-ops and provides a JIT for GHC Core that runs Haskell on the JVM

Look, it's very cool and a great project, but I just don't think you should call the compiler "turbo $something" if you're not going to make it a TUI IDE.

yjftsjthsd-h··on SDF Public Access Unix System ... est. 1987
Is it? I don't get any intuitive connection from "telnet" to "shell access over the network", personally. Although, by the same token I would be open to reusing the rsh name; "remote shell" does seem obvious.

SSH is 30 years old; it's fine

yjftsjthsd-h··on Upgrade your desktop: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS is now available
As of Debian 12, they should include the non-free firmware by default, and even before that you didn't have to jump through a lot of hoops to add support

yjftsjthsd-h··on Hijacking the PS5's RTMP stream
In what sense is the steam deck more console than pc? I agree that there's convenience in it being a single target for people to work on, but it lets you run anything you want even on the stock operating system, and you can trivially replace that at will
yjftsjthsd-h··on Hijacking the PS5's RTMP stream
> I guess it just has an HDMI capture chip on-board. If you have a spare USB port, these are under $20 everywhere.

Any decent ones? I own a few that I use for managing (semi)headless machines and they all manage maybe 2-3fps

yjftsjthsd-h··on GrapheneOS – When an app is slow
How's it abusing anything? It's an Android app that works fine with the default Android memory allocator.

yjftsjthsd-h··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
A pro-AI fork would be nice for both "sides"; we could experimentally see whether it helps or hurts. In a few months-years, we should be able to see whether it's faster/buggier/better/worse.
yjftsjthsd-h··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
Honestly, kinda? It'd be rude and cause a performance regression, but it shouldn't break anything.
yjftsjthsd-h··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
People are more inclined to contribute when it's easy than when it's hard. What of it?
yjftsjthsd-h··on PostmarketOS is rebranding as Nura
I'm torn; the old name was awkward, but renaming is a painful breaking change. Oh well, it's done now.
yjftsjthsd-h··on Why Red Hat Dropped Btrfs and Standardized on XFS in RHEL

Failing to catch the cheaters does punish the honest students, who in your approach get a worse GPA.
yjftsjthsd-h··on What even is an OS now?
I do think there's some interesting space to be explored in capability-based systems, but even then I think it would mostly end up looking similar to how existing systems are, just with one more element added
yjftsjthsd-h··on F-Droid 2.0
I literally linked a time when they intervened.
yjftsjthsd-h··on F-Droid 2.0
Notably, this is still cutting out the middleman and bypassing the extra review that that entails. It's fine as long as you trust everybody involved in publishing the repo, which is probably fine here, but a thing to keep in mind.
yjftsjthsd-h··on F-Droid 2.0
True. And especially for that use, I can imagine that the slow return around is actually a breaking problem. I think there are relatively few apps that need that kind of quick update, and I'm more concerned with malicious authors than that, but it would depend on precisely what you need out of your apps.
yjftsjthsd-h··on The newest ESP32 can run Linux and it's getting close to a Raspberry Pi
Universal compatibility only helps if you can actually reach the access point over the most crowded channels in the apartment building.
yjftsjthsd-h··on The newest ESP32 can run Linux and it's getting close to a Raspberry Pi
> There’s no way a multi-user OS such as Linux can be as efficient as a firmware blob that does one thing

Yes, obviously. The advantage is in how easy it is to port software to the board, and how much work you need to do to get any given amount of functionality.
