yitchelle··on Ask HN: What's it like transitioning from SWE to PM?
Yes, I am happy for the transition.
yitchelle··on Ask HN: What's it like transitioning from SWE to PM?
I was the lead engineer for about 4 years.
yitchelle··on Ask HN: What's it like transitioning from SWE to PM?
My path was IC to Lead Engineer to PM. The Lead Engineer role really help me to get an idea what the next step would be. I liked it and made the transition about 7 years ago.

Staying in the same engineering domain when I transitioned into PM helps keep my technical curiosity engaged. I can do with less red tape and office politics, but it comes with the job, so it is unavoidable.

Hope this data point help you out.

yitchelle··on Show HN: Coffeehouse, one-on-one voicechat with random HN users
I have tried Lunchclub. I liked the fact that it relies its user base with work and professional background. However once the initial contact is made, ongoing conversation rarely took place. Hope this solves the problem of ongoing conversation.
yitchelle··on If Looks Could Kill
I don't think time would change the severity of the situation. Imagine if someone did a prank at CES2022 and ruined a multimillion display.
yitchelle··on Jonathan the 190-Year-Old Tortoise Was Photographed in 1886 and Today
This blog (0) - "The Oldest Living Things in the world" has a incredible old organisms.

Although not mobile like Jonathan, the trees and moss are really old. Some are 12,000 years old. Still Amazing.

yitchelle··on Two weeks later David Bennett is alive, his pig’s heart beating soundly
For a layman like me on medical matters, it seems very strange that a pig's heart is used. Would it more logical idea to use a primate, our closest "cousin"?
yitchelle··on Ask HN: Work Gamification
Job survival is the real game.
yitchelle··on Kakoune Code Editor
Sorry if it looks like I was being flippant. I wasn't. I had some colleagues in the past that did adjust their colour scheme almost monthly. I think it was when syntax highlight first came onto the scene back in the mid 90s.
yitchelle··on Kakoune Code Editor
I would have thought that creating/adapting a colour scheme is a onetime activity when you start using the editor for your language. Do you update the colour scheme regularly?
yitchelle··on Ask HN: Eight Months in and this job is unbearable
Another possible option is to look for other opportunities in the same company. It is usually much easier to switch department/office/sites that to switch companies.

Of course, I am making the big assumption that he problems are you are describing is not company wide and is localised to your manager/team/department.

yitchelle··on Rijksmuseum to Stage the Largest Vermeer Exhibition in 2023
That is an incredible level of perseverance. Was he working on these 30 oils continuously?
yitchelle··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
Thanks for the link. That link says it is a the median salary for "Software Developers, Quality Assurance Analysts, and Testers".

I thought the OP meant the median salary for the entire American population.

yitchelle··on Ask HN: Am I the only “unlucky” software engineer?
That figure must be for a particular niche, ie Software engineering based around SF.
yitchelle··on How the Rosetta Stone yielded its secrets
Came across this podcast some weeks back where they tell the story of how various artefacts ended in British museums. Hopefully, they can expand this out to other museums round the world.

yitchelle··on Show HN: Pony – a messenger for mindful correspondence
Could you just turn off the notifications on your messenging apps?

That is what I do for all messenging apps except for SMS. I would check them in my downtime in the evening.

yitchelle··on Worldometer – real time world statistics
Not being flippant but I have to ask what is the use case to have real time statistics?
yitchelle··on 80386DX ISA single board microcomputer
It is truly amazing that one person can bring up a 386DX board system. It is true that there are tons of docs available, but still to bring everything together and to get it running is truly amazing. The team size at any of the PC OEMs doing a 386DX design when it was the state of the art would be at least 25 engineers and managers, easily.

Congrats to Alexandru for hitting this out of the park.

yitchelle··on An original Apple-1 computer sells for $400k
Sounds like a good premise for a treasure hunt of sorts.

Remember the video of a group hunting a stash of ET Atari video games cartridges, that was an interesting video.

yitchelle··on Legacy Train Control System Stabilisation (2012) [pdf]
>> the codebase wasn't going to be used for any future projects

I have heard this many times, especially for the "single use executable for a specific use case". Many years later, it had made its way into production code and is on its 10th iteration.

yitchelle··on The Goiânia Accident (1987)
Hopefully, the next time will be due to a more positive story.
yitchelle··on SPARCbook 3000ST: The coolest 90s laptop (2019)
Talking about retro technology, I am shamelessly plugging my twitter account for retro tech adverts.

https://twitter.com/OldTechAdverts

I've been posting those amazing old tech adverts out of Byte, Compute, Antic and Zzap64 magazines 90s, 80s and older. Looking at adverts for retro games, retro electronics and others. Hope to see you there.

yitchelle··on Open Steno Project – Freeing stenography
I am wondering if other professions that uses keyboard contact a lot are using this? especially wondering about novelists.
yitchelle··on Astronomers witnessed the death of a star as it happened
They were born long, long ago as well.
yitchelle··on Autonomous boats seem more solvable than autonomous cars
On the surface, it is hardly a fair comparison.

Can an autonomous boat drive around through the Suez canal and avoid all the obstacles? Now that would be a fair comparison.

yitchelle··on Astronomers witnessed the death of a star as it happened
There should be millions of stars out there where death and birth of stars should be happening quite often.

Why are we not seeing these? Is space just too big for us tiny human beings to observe them?

yitchelle··on The Kodak Brownie changed privacy rights
Really? Can you share a link? I would be interested in looking at these further.
yitchelle··on The Kodak Brownie changed privacy rights
I am really suprised that the cost of a Brownie camera is $1.25 (roughly $34 in today’s dollars), when contrast to todays ubiquitous equivalent which is the phone camera. Equivalent in the sense of enabling folks to take photos ad nauseum.
yitchelle··on Bitcoin Just Hit a New All Time High in US Dollars
Anyone have a layman's guess as to what is driving it to hit these ATHs?
yitchelle··on List of IEEE Milestones
I also agree that it is strange as I would have thought human triggered electrical events would have been conducted much before Ben Franklin's.
