ygouzerh··on Definancialization / Hyperfinancialization
One of the claim made here is that we are wasting time putting our money to work. I would argue the contrary. In a world where people are just putting their savings under their mattress, it's a shame.

Money is energy. Instead of let it aside "in case we need it later", it should help other people to grow, and give them an extra pair of hands.

If we don't want to waste time looking at where to invest it, then taxes to put dormant money into a sovereign fund, which in return will give out the interest in the form of social measures, is something that can be done as well.

ygouzerh··on Suspension of inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong
In a world based on mutual respects instead of trading wars, there should be no point to redo everything again in every country. If one country is very good at doing something, why try to re-implement it again?
ygouzerh··on Efficient Reasoning with Hidden Thinking
From what I understood (not an expert), it seems that it's the goal, to see if the knowledge in one modality can be translated in an another one. Typically, if a model trained on sound can leverage the knowledge of musical theory, it would be quite interesting
ygouzerh··on Chat is a bad UI pattern for development tools
That's a great idea! Maybe when context window will be larger and tokens even cheaper?

I would like as well to add to it a peer-programming feature, with it making some comments on top of the shoulder when coding, a kind of smarter linter that will not lint one line, but that will have the entire project context.

ygouzerh··on Chat is a bad UI pattern for development tools
It's interesting, it seems that we are looping back on the old trend of Model-Driven Architecture
ygouzerh··on Chat is a bad UI pattern for development tools
Good explanation! As an open-reflexion: will a declarative document be as detailed as the imperative version? Often between the specs that the product team is providing (that we can consider as the "descriptive" document) and the implementation, many sub specs have been created by the tech team that uncovered some important implementation details. It's like a Rabbit Hole.

For example, for a signup page, we could have: - Declarative: Signup the user using their email address - Imperative: To do the same, we will need to implement the smtp library, which means discovering that we need an SMTP server, so now we need to choose which one. And when purchasing an SMTP Server plan, we discover that there are rate limit, so now we need to add some bot protection to our signup page (IP Rate Limit only? ReCaptcha? Cloudflare bot protection?), etc

Which means that at the end, the imperative code way is kind of like the ultimate implementation specs.

Thanks for the sharing!
ygouzerh··on Using GPS satellites to detect tsunamis via ionospheric ionization waves
Wow that would be great! The high number of casualties during the 2002 tsunami mostly was due to a lack of early alerting, as not enough tsunami buoys were deployed. This could have save so many lives.
ygouzerh··on Amazon Nova
They might not have enough GPUs datacenters in Europe
ygouzerh··on M4 MacBook Pro
It looks like few people only are using Wifi 7 for now. Maybe they are going to include it in the next generation when more people will use it.
ygouzerh··on How Excessive Red Meat Consumption Increases Colorectal Cancer Risk
That's a good question, spinach have the same type of iron than in red meat, iron-(Fe3+), so it seems that it could a culprit as well.

It looks like however the absorption of iron in red meat is quite high (15%-35%) compared to spinach (2-5%), so maybe not enough to really be a risk factor.

ygouzerh··on OpenFeature – a vendor-agnostic, community-driven API for feature flagging
Do you mean feature flags? This enable you to change the configuration at the runtime. Ex: A/B Testing and changing a behavior for a subset of users, disable feature when you want it (particularly useful when you are in Trunk Based Development and don't want to deploy a beta feature to everyone for example).
ygouzerh··on Stem cells reverse woman’s diabetes
It seems from the article that it's harder to monitor, so by injecting in the abdomen they can monitor them using MRI and remove them if needed.
ygouzerh··on Stem cells reverse woman’s diabetes
That's awesome! My sister got diabetes Type 1 few years ago and was loosing hope. That's a very great news for her and all the people that have to lived with it and who we told there was no cure when they got it.
ygouzerh··on Nobody Cares (2011)
That's seems quite following existential nihilism
ygouzerh··on Codestral Mamba
Wow very useful comment, thank you very much for all the work to write it!
ygouzerh··on Ask HN: Why is the crypto booming again?
It was mostly due to the market being very low the last year and beginning of the year :

- Interest rates rise cut cash flow to many startups - NFT bubble burst - And mostly: the FTX drama, which froze even more investments in the market

Now it's starting to get back to "normal" (actually a bit more than normal with the Bitcoin spot ETF being approved)

ygouzerh··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
So Pro and Ultra are from my understanding link to the number of parameters. More parameters means more reasonning capabilities, but more compute needed.

So Pro is like the light and fast version and Ultra the advanced and expensive one.

ygouzerh··on Tell HN: Please don't print –-help to stderr in your CLI tools
I love this answer! Indeed, we cannot put --help because sometimes the help appears when we put wrong arguments, so we should output it to stderr, so we can see that we made a mistake
ygouzerh··on Ash Framework
If I understand well, is it a Model-Driven Development (MDD) framework? If yes it's quite nice to see some people are working on that.

The only famous tool I heard about it was some MOF Plugin on Eclipse IDE. And at a different level but kind of the same philosophy, Jetbrain MPS (but more focus on the DSL part).

I am not sure yet if I adhere with MDD principles, but at least it's good to see a modern tool to try it out.

ygouzerh··on LXD: Containers for Human Beings
"This process can be trivially automated with shell scripts" [Author when speaking about LXD] --> I personally have the reverse experience after using Docker vs VM + pure bash scripts or Ansible.

Dockerfile/Docker-compose deployments fit in a couple of lines, where an Ansible deployments can spread easily across multiple playbooks.

Dockerfile is quite declarative (WORKDIR, USER, COPY, etc). It's easier to predict what it will do than when using a pure bash script or ansible playbook.

And even RUN, by leverage the cache layers, it gives you a bit of immutability + and increased provisioning speed.

ygouzerh··on Launch HN: Nullstone (YC W22) – An easier way to deploy and manage cloud apps
The product is interesting for an individual! However, my company will not accept product that are charged per user. I am based in Hong Kong, and often in Asia, we are hiring with engineers working remotely from Southeast Asia, due to a very low pricing per head.

It would be better if it's a total cost. In this way we could just put it side to side with our cloud billing.

ygouzerh··on For DNSSEC and Why DANE Is Needed
Thank you for sharing about DANE, I never heard of it before. It's an interesting alternative to PKI.

In my devops engineering team, a great deal of our time is passed managing and troubleshooting certificates setup (either getting them from letsencrypt, buying them from real CAs, setup local hashicorp vault as a local CA, or sharing/installing self-signed certificates).

By being able to generate "self-signed" cert ourselves and just having to setup a DNS record instead of having to have to request everyone to install it, it could free a great deal of our time. (If I understood it well)

ygouzerh··on Show HN: I made a MailChimp alternative that connects to your database
The frontend of the website is quite nice, how did you built it ?
ygouzerh··on Shelter Protocol: End-to-end encrypted, federated, user-friendly web apps
Interesting remark! Genuine question here: by what would you replace JSON if you can re-architecture it?
ygouzerh··on Tech execs are stressed out. Half are heavy drinkers and 45% take painkillers
It would be great to compare these numbers with the ones of the general population
ygouzerh··on ChatGPT loses users for first time, shaking faith in AI revolution
If ChatGPT will provided more free-tier for GPT4, it's pretty sure that the numbers will go up.

At least from a software engineer point of view, the code provided by GPT3.5 is no match against GPT4

ygouzerh··on Threads, an Instagram app
I will do the counter-argument: this app is from Instagram, so it might have an higher success rate. To have worked in big corporate, new products are often entirely managed by a division, and only a reporting is done to the central entity.
ygouzerh··on Show HN: Script – A text editor for digitally interconnected documents
I like the cartoon style of the logos, did you hired a designer for it or did you used a generative tool like Midjourney ?
