yetanotherloss··on Using GPT as an HVAC control system
The same reason even people who should know better implement all sorts of insane things in Excel. It's the tool available to them that they can find tutorials on using. With GPT it even seems like it's doing work for you.

Obviously anyone who knows anything about control systems immediately has five or six reasons why this is terrible, but in the meantime My First GPT is running lawn mowers from the sketchy discount shop because none of those people even knew how to ask.

yetanotherloss··on Stop Using Brave Browser
Brave in "high" shield settings blocks ads and nasty practices on phones. Firefoxmobile does now too via extensions, but it's also sadly noticeably slower for most sites I care about.

I'm completely anti advert. They declared war on civilization 20 years ago and don't deserve to be treated as anything but a parasitic cultural disease. It didn't have to be this way, but that's where they took us.

Why build LLMs when the problem does not need to exist in the first place. The rest of the civilized world does not need LLMs to solve this because they didn't build this dumpster fire in the first place.
yetanotherloss··on Red Hat cutting back RHEL source availability
I have no raw feelings towards organizations trying to keep themselves in business, but I'd be happier if it was literally anyone besides Oracle.
yetanotherloss··on The duck in the room – the end of baseload
Trackers are used at scale but it depends where. If a solar plant isn't intended to maximize output because peak prices can be negative, then there isn't much point. However at locations where something other than price is a driving factor, trackers are common enough at grid-scale facilities.

The energy market systems are somewhat distorting perceptions of power in general and some reliability planners are worried that as older dispatchable generation goes offline for good, rotating blackouts may be in the future for many high demand areas.

As an aside, it remains funny to me how much effort organizations put into fighting NAT in 2023 instead of effort to just use ipv6.

Of course then there is the embarrassment of azure ipv6 so it's perhaps somewhat forgivable:)

yetanotherloss··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
Exactly. Particularly with pressed pills it's almost impossible to know what really in it without a chemistry set, and the people mixing this stuff aren't moonlighting after their day job at the CDC.
yetanotherloss··on SFUSD's delay of algebra 1 has created a nightmare of workarounds
Wow. We did algebra in .. 5th grade?

Seems like standardized testing and goals is killing things about as predicted.

For the most part it's not intentionally lacing drugs, it's poor quality control and cross contamination.

No one is intentionally mixing fentanyl and MDMA or cocaine but with poor lab work it's easy to get a bit of the wrong whitish powder and the people selling it down stream have no more idea than their buyers what's really in it.

Affluent recreational drug connoisseurs can use basic chemistry and test kits to be highly confident what they're taking but even they get bit sometimes if reckless and using a new source.

The weak construction of US homes honestly should depreciate too, it's a cultural lie that we tell ourselves about how something built as cheaply as possible to 1970s codes by suburban land developers with asbestos and aluminum wiring is somehow appreciating versus the land it is sitting on.

I'd totally have torn down and replaced my house if that was something the homebuilding sector optimized for.

Indeed, if you're getting that far away from historical file systems primitives then may as well use an API model that makes senses for the storage backend. Or just contribute direct to rclone and fuse.
yetanotherloss··on The F-15 Eagle: Origins and Development, 1964-1972 [pdf]
It was but production was scaled back so much, and the peer enemy aircraft it was needed to defeat still largely don't exist yet. As a result the production lines were shut down and equipment moved to permanent storage and other multirole fighters that are usually less expensive end up doing the F22's job.

In the horrifying event of a US-China war or similar they'd be front line units along with F-35s and other modern fighters, but as is they'll probably end up on service life extension and retired without ever being used much in combat.

The F-15 was sold to other nations and IIRC the majority of its air superiority engagements were with the Israeli air force.

yetanotherloss··on Cocaine production reaches record levels as new trafficking hubs emerge
They don't do it intentionally for the most part, it's cross contamination or poorly handling and lab protocol by people with cargo cult training.
