ycombinator_acc··on Illegal host, electric shocks, slugs, leaks and no support – How Airbnb failed
Are you saying there are no bedbugs in hotels? If so, I have bed news for you.
ycombinator_acc··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
You weren't wrong in your use though. Markdown is one of the markup languages.

Also yes Obsidian is pretty much a wiki.

ycombinator_acc··on Obsidian 1.0 – Personal knowledge base app
ReStructuredText seems like it would be a better contender because it's the standard markup language for the most popular programming language.

It's also natively supported in VSCode (unlike AsciiDoc).

ycombinator_acc··on Time-restricted eating reduces visceral fat and improves metabolic syndrome
Did you do resistance training on a regular basis while on keto? When at a deficit, your body gets rid of what it doesn't need. The goal is to tell your body it needs the muscle (and doesn't need the fat).

Edit: just read that you don't lift. That's why you lost muscle.

ycombinator_acc··on Time-restricted eating reduces visceral fat and improves metabolic syndrome
I wonder if regular resistance training would've avoided the muscle loss.
ycombinator_acc··on Twilio incident: What Signal users need to know
That sounds horrible. Would I be SoL even if I had ticked "Registration Lock" prior to that?
ycombinator_acc··on Twilio incident: What Signal users need to know
>it was possible for them to attempt to register the phone numbers they accessed to another device using the SMS verification code

That's a thing? If my number expires and gets reassigned to someone else, and they register for Signal, I'll get locked out of my account just like that? And they'll start getting all the messages that were addressed to me?

ycombinator_acc··on Our plans for Thunderbird on Android
I hope they get rid of the dreaded hamburger menu and other Gingerbread-era design patterns and just generally make the app less ancient-looking and more usable on modern gesture-based Android.

Fairemail is much better in that regard, which is why I stick to it, but still quite dated.

Don't blame the player, blame the game.
ycombinator_acc··on Things I can’t do on macOS which I can do on Ubuntu (2020)
In my experience it's anything but great. It's so slow and such a huge resource hog might as well run a full on Windows VM.
ycombinator_acc··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
Border control and ice will know.

100%. They've doxxed hundreds of teachers, children (literal 14-15 year olds) and just regular people, accused them of grooming, ruined countless careers and lives.

The hypocrisy is strong with this one.

ycombinator_acc··on Twitter Employee Revealed Identity of User to WaPo Reporter
They are not. Like I said, they add their own framing.

Sure, you can't complain. But it's sad wearing some costume wins you a spot on a cringe comp whereas being discriminatory toward groups of people doesn't just get ridiculed but is actively celebrated.

I'm not talking about the establishment or defending doxxing. I'm responding to your original comment on "how this is a problem." The account owner shouldn't have been deanonymized, but the account shouldn't have been so popular to begin with.

Fox news is the biggest news network by far, so lots of people care.

ycombinator_acc··on Twitter Employee Revealed Identity of User to WaPo Reporter
If you bothered to look at it you'd see it doesn't just repost the videos. It frames them in a very negative way. It's also very popular if you look at the amount of activity under every post. The worst part is Fox News routinely use them (a Twitter account, mind you) as the source for their news pieces.

It doesn't actually help your sleep. That claim has been debunked in multiple studies, including this recent one:

ycombinator_acc··on Show HN: Personal CRM: Note taking, the way it should be
Exactly. They aren't mutually exclusive, as can be confirmed by many real world examples.

If Baidu, Tencent, Cloudflare etc are "low hanging fruit" then Netflix is an even lower hanging fruit. It's just a streaming service. Even Twitch has a wider audience than them. Which is the reason I was confused why you brought those two up specifically, instead of the bigger players who are way more ubiquitous.

Invidition is just a wrapper. Doesn't solve the larger problem which is what's happening on the server. Last time I tried it YouTube was completely broken because Google changed a tiny little thing.

ycombinator_acc··on Firefox 74
But there are thousands big ones out there. Cloudflare, Cloudfront, Baidu, Yandex, Akamai, Tencent, Twitter, Yahoo, Disqus, Uber, Airbnb, Pinterest etc. Why bring up Apple and Netflix specifically?
