yborg··on Photo GIMP – A Patch for GIMP 3 for Photoshop Users
I don't think it's that PS has a better UI it's that so many people spent years in it because it became the de facto standard in graphic design work. Given the choice between doing work and learning a totally different interface so you can do work is choice many people won't make.
yborg··on Building a UMatrix Replacement
There's still uMatrix, for that matter. gorhill hasn't updated it in 5 years, but still just werks.
yborg··on BYOMesh – New LoRa mesh radio offers 100x the bandwidth
Cue xkcd on standards. I've been interested in mesh radio, and I keep hoping that a winner will emerge. Probably won't until a large commercial vendor gets interested and picks one.
yborg··on Notepad++ for Mac – Independent community port
Can confirm, friend who moved to Mac after 30+ years on Win ecosystem and all of the discussions we have are basically "but on Windows..." They specifically have lamented the unavailability of Notepad++ because of a specific hanging indent behavior they are used to.

Most people do not have the cognitive flexibility to really adapt to a tool that is more or less domain equivalent but different in any way. These small differences create more friction than learning something that doesn't have any close mapping to what you knew before.

yborg··on Firefox Has Integrated Brave's Adblock Engine
>"their"

It's an entirely different management team.

yborg··on Bitwarden CLI compromised in ongoing Checkmarx supply chain campaign
My approach is that for critical sites like banking, I use the site URL stored in the password manager too, I don't navigate via any link clicking. I personally am fine with thinking when my entire net worth is potentially at stake.
yborg··on Mozilla Used Anthropic's Mythos to Find and Fix 271 Bugs in Firefox
What they did not say is how many of these vulnerabilities were addressed by LLM-created fixes, if any.
yborg··on US Bill Mandates On-Device Age Verification
It helps them by making it somebody else's responsibility to get it right and thus shields them from liability.
yborg··on Introduction to Obsidian
It has nested folders. But it will continue to have the problem of not being exactly whatever you are using now.
yborg··on The bot situation on the internet is worse than you could imagine
Maybe post your brilliant solution to commercial companies with hundreds of millions in funding unrestrained bot scraping the Internet for AI training instead of complaining about people desperate to rein it in as individuals.
yborg··on Make macOS consistently bad unironically
You have a truly Magic Mouse if yours charges in 15 minutes. In my experience, it is hours to charge from zero, which until I put an always-running monitor in the menu bar for the mouse battery level is what you are guaranteed to have since there is no other indicator of mouse battery level.

I used to roll my eyes at the complaints until I actually had one of these, and it is appallingly bad engineering. Especially since the previous design, which was functionally identical just needed a 10 second battery swap.

yborg··on 90% of crypto's Illinois primary spending failed to achieve its objective
The Krishnamoorthi Senate loss was a shock, he had more money than virtually the rest of the field put together and had name recognition and was a sitting 5 time House representative. Nobody knows who the Lt. Gov. was, even with Pritzker's backing.
yborg··on Hundreds of Millions of iPhones Can Be Hacked With a New Tool Found in the Wild
It's especially glaring since Apple just released a fix for a Coruna exploit that patched iOS 15.
yborg··on Why the global elite gave up on spelling and grammar
You should consider finding other employment or at least another manager. If this is an example of how you are being evaluated in that organization, it can only get worse.
yborg··on Tony Hoare has died
This particular word for the oldest profession goes back to Old English. I am fairly sure it would outlive the building.
yborg··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
Because most tablets are intended to be as thin and compact as possible while being too large to wrap a hand around. Imagine the complaints if Apple told people to buy a case so they could hold the product. Imagine putting a ledge on one side to hold it oh hey, it's a Kindle Scribe (and still ALSO has a bigger bezel than the iPad Pro.)
yborg··on US orders diplomats to fight data sovereignty initiatives
This just accelerates the Balkanization of the Internet, which already is segregated by China and Russia. Maybe it was inevitable. Corporations benefit the most from open access and as they have demonstrated with unrestricted AI scraping they obey no morality, ethics, or law they are not compelled to by force.
yborg··on 15 years later, Microsoft morged my diagram

yborg··on Faster Than Dijkstra?
The Quanta article on the paper was considerably more breathless in describing a fine piece of work in mathematics. The author here points out that one of the things that makes Dijkstra's result iconic is that it could be used practically in a straightforward way. As an engineer, beautiful mathematics is useless if I can't convert it to running code.
yborg··on Google Fulfilled ICE Subpoena Demanding Student Journalist Credit Card Number
Fastmail is Australian, though?
yborg··on When internal hostnames are leaked to the clown
Huh. How did you link to jwz without getting THAT image?
yborg··on Show HN: Zuckerman – minimalist personal AI agent that self-edits its own code
That might reduce botting for about 30 days, people will just tee up an endless supply of parked ids that will then spin up to post after the lockout expires.
yborg··on Mozilla is building an AI 'rebel alliance' to take on OpenAI, Anthropic
>Creating a rebel alliance to fight the Empire

>Receive most of their funding from the Empire

It's a trap!

yborg··on An Elizabethan mansion's secrets for staying warm
The masonry heater has a long history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonry_heater
yborg··on Pebble Round 2
Not just subscription farming, you cannot use the latest mobile app versions without agreeing to data mining. Their business model now is literally collecting user health and usage data to resell to other companies and of course for AI training. Avoid.

yborg··on Japanese game devs face font dilemma as license increases from $380 to $20k
Genshin is produced by a Chinese company, MiHoYo. And I think Monotype will have a much harder time trying to strongarm a PRC-based company if they decide to try this there.
yborg··on Lucent 7 R/E 5ESS Telephone Switch Rescue (2024)
I wonder how many operating 5ESS are left now.
yborg··on Firefox expands fingerprint protections
Doesn't seem to work... reported canvas size is still some odd value (2200x1283x24). I think it uses a fixed size for the letterbox, which is useless. Right general idea though.
yborg··on Firefox expands fingerprint protections
In my case the single largest contributor to my fingerprint is ... canvas size. I run full screen with a custom Firefox setup that basically makes my canvas size unique :/ The "protection" Firefox uses for this is to always open a new window at a default size, which does nothing in my case since my toolbar config still makes the canvas size unique.

It would be really useful to have something that dithers the reported canvas size by 5 or 10 pixels in different containers to add noise there.
