yarinr··on Minimal safe Bash script template
> The opposite of "it's like riding a bike" is "it's like programming in bash".

> A phrase which means that no matter how many times you do something, you will have to re-learn it every single time.

Couldn't phrase it better myself. After wasting way too much time, I tend to go with Python for anything more than a couple of lines, even trivial stuff. That's, of course, unless there's a very compelling reason to use bash.

yarinr··on How to Do What You Want: Akrasia and Self-Binding (2011)
Hi, I'm the one who sent this link. It's funny to see you here, since I actually discovered it by reading your blog post! I honestly not sure how I stumbled upon it, but I liked it. Thank you!

As for the link, what really resonated with me was the concept of commitment vehicles. We all hit external deadlines (a form of commitment vehicle) on a regular basis, so how can we harness their power to meet OUR OWN goals? This article presents some approaches (Beeminder and otherwise). I wonder what other approaches exist!

yarinr··on Show HN: The Do Bank - Beat Procrastination
I like the general idea. However, this sounds the same as Beeminder https://www.beeminder.com/ Is your product any different?
yarinr··on Ask HN: How do you privately share pictures and video with family and friends?
That's correct. I use it occasionally, but it's pretty inconvenient for more than a single photo. Also, since we're talking about sharing, this requires 'educating' the people you're sharing with.
yarinr··on Ask HN: How do you privately share pictures and video with family and friends?
Not sure if it answers you question, but WhatsApp takes most full-size photos down to 200-250kb~
yarinr··on How to Memorize Faster with the Spaced Repetition Learning Technique
Thanks! I just watched the video and it looks great, will also read the article later. Also - did you happen to share your (programming related) anki deck? I would love to see that!
yarinr··on Ask HN: How do you privately share pictures and video with family and friends?
Google Photos with shared albums, works great for my family & friends.

It used to be impossible for everyone to get all the photos after a vacation / trip / event. Now we just create a shared album and everyone upload everything.

Edit: WhatsApp biggest flaw is the aggressive compression. It takes pictures down to an unacceptable qualify.

yarinr··on Attention Is My Most Valuable Asset for Productivity as a Software Developer
Does it mean he's saying hang and power cleans are safer than deadlift? I've only ever deadlifted, but cleans always looked way more injury prone to me. Am I missing something? (I do deadlift not for the sake of deadlift)

I've posted Springer's promotion about 45 days ago. They have about 500 books you can download for free! I also included a list of all the computer science ones, if anyone interested: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23055340
yarinr··on I bought netflix.soy
That's correct. Typing 'com' with the keyboard set to Hebrew results in 'בםצ' (which is not even pronounceable) not 'קום'.

The Hebrew keyboard layout has no relation to QWERTY in terms of phonetics.

yarinr··on I bought netflix.soy
I'm from Israel, and this is the first time I've heard about the .קום tld. I've never seen any website that uses it.

The author mentioned that creating a new tld costs a minimum of 185k USD. This makes me wonder who would pay this kind of money for this completely useless tld.

yarinr··on Don't set the language of your website based on user location
While annoying, I don't even care about websites setting the wrong language as default. What I absolutely HATE, though, is websites and apps that FORCE you to view them in a certain language, based on either location or on OS locale.

Google Maps is the worst. I live in Israel, so I obviously want to see street names in Hebrew. My Android device locale is set to English (Because that's the way I prefer, and I also rather not see everything flipped because of the RTL nature of Hebrew). This FORCES me to view street names in English, and there simply NO WAY around it other than changing the device language. It has been this way for years, and it's painful. Why not just let us modify the language on per-app basis?

Very aesthetically pleasing, nice job! Hitting 'c' for copy didn't work for me on Chrome@Windows.

yarinr··on Notion encourages busy-work
> Gardening Notion boards becomes an activity in itself … Notion doesn’t get out of the way, it’s malleability always invites you to tweak your boards further, to add another property, to connect another relation, to add another view, to go through your board and complete data on all cards.

Sounds exactly like the problem so many folks here are having with Emacs. Malleable tools, while powerful, often become a huge time sink if you go into the rabbit hole of tweaking them too much. And it's often hard to resist.

yarinr··on Ask HN: Why are there almost no intermediate-level learning resources?
Handmade Hero is great. I'm not really into game programming, but I wish such an amazing resource would exist for other areas.
yarinr··on Ask HN: Why are there almost no intermediate-level learning resources?
> I suppose what I am looking for are videos where people walk you through some really advanced open-source applications and explain the application structure and design decisions they have made. That could be relevant for all sorts of tech stacks and combinations.

If that's what you're looking for, consider checking out 'The Architecture of Open Source Applications' here http://aosabook.org/en/index.html

It's not in video form, and the focus, as the name suggests, is on the architecture more than on the tech stack, but you might find it useful.

yarinr··on How to Edit Your Own Writing
Yeah. That's exactly what I meant in my comment, thanks for clarifying.
yarinr··on How to Edit Your Own Writing
As a non-native English speaker, using a thesaurus is often a great help. I do have a pretty decent vocabulary, but sometimes the right word just doesn't come to mind.

Besides using a thesaurus for writing, I occasionally also find it useful for naming things when programming.

yarinr··on San Francisco bans public events holding more than 1,000 people
Israel just banned gatherings of 100 people or more. No fans in sport events. I also wonder what would fill the vacuum of all the canceled parties and nightlife, since it's pretty popular here. https://www.ynetnews.com/article/rkOV11s8B8
yarinr··on Ask HN: What tech stack would you use to build an open-source Google Keep clone?
> I've been building an open source notes app recently and I picked Rust + ReasonML and React in the front end.

Could you share a link to the repo? I'd love to take a look :)
