yannoninator··on Tell HN: I've rejected $1.4M offer to work on open-source instead
> Contribute to open source projects like Linux where they can't do that.

The Linux Foundation 2021 annual report [0] forecasts revenues of over $177M and companies are still involved in the development of Linux and other open source projects under that umbrella.

Either way, Linux devs and other open source devs are being "supported" by these big corporations.

yes, food requires money. i have nothing to lose really.
yannoninator··on Groups never admit failure
> Groups never admit failure.

> A group will never admit they were wrong.

ConstitutionDAO tried to buy the US Constitution. When the auction ended there was a large Twitter spaces group that mistakenly celebrated CDAO's 'win' in the auction.

However, when it was revealed that CDAO actually lost the bid, the Twitter spaces group admitted they were wrong and that CDAO failed and then announced it to everyone in the group. [0]

This group admitted failure.

yannoninator··on Heroku Is Having an Outage
Is there an alternative to Heroku these days?

Heroku has not innovated in anything after being acquired by Salesforce and it seems to be going down almost every week.

yannoninator··on Web3 Is Bullshit
What rebuttal? I agree with the post?

I just want the common man to see crypto for what it really is with a balanced debate or interview, not just a blog post that only 'nerds' reads as Diehl states.

> It’s almost only nerds who read my blog...

After all, it would be more credible coming from him than me.

yannoninator··on Web3 Is Bullshit
Wouldn't a media interview or someone debating Diehl be even more credible?

The public can make their minds up when presented with both sides of the argument rather than one side on Twitter.

And they complied? It would be more worse if they didn't comply or respond at all.

What's the issue?

And? This isn't news though, we all know.

Could we have someone from the Rust Core Team here for a statement for more context rather than us guessing the context?

We still don't know what is going on.

yannoninator··on You Shouldn't Become a Programmer
Or maybe "Mike" is projecting his failure onto everyone who reads this drivel.

But yes, I agree, this is absolutely cringeworthy.

yannoninator··on We built a custom Rust library for Capture
What difference does writing this library in rust make when the entire program is using electron?

This reminds me of how 1password justified electron "because rust" [0] and the comparison of the old software [1]

It means that I cannot use this on my old macbook air without it grinding to a halt.

yannoninator··on WhatsApp – About multi-device beta
doesn't seem to be a difficult challenge for facebook.
yannoninator··on Neo-Nazis are still on Facebook. And they’re making money
If that's the case then, and if nothing changes then Facebook would now be a safe haven for these nazis and I don't see Facebook doing anything to get rid of them.

The other day I still saw nazi accounts on Twitter, so as far as I can see, nothing is being done about that either.

yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
> This really did not age well...

How so? Would you like to explain how you came to this conclusion?

yannoninator··on Neo-Nazis are still on Facebook. And they’re making money
I thought these nazis were on gab thats where we kicked them to, why are they still on facebook?
yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
So you're saying there isn't an issue with the Rust foundation's governance then?

Now I'm assuming you just jumped into the comments without understanding anything no?

EDIT:

> We shouldn't be giving corporations too much power by letting them buy board seats in a foundation to steer the language, in this case Rust.

@stale2002 I already mentioned this issue. However the user @secuthro22 continued trolling further with: "WhAT cONCerns?"

yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
> What are your concerns, exactly? Do you even have any, or are you just being dramatic about "big company bad"?

Where did I say "big company bad"?, I'm not against them sponsoring a project, they shouldn't get the opportunity to buy a board seat, which is what Rust's structure allows. Hence why, it's appearing that Rust isn't being led by the community.

Before you continue to gaslight me again, you can have companies (big ones) that sponsor a project/foundation and not be given a board seat.

yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
So you've admitted you haven't read what I said and the tweets and you've just rushed into the comments section?

  > I don't understand why Google, Microsoft and AWS et. al are on a board of this new foundation.

  > It is the structure that I am concerned about. Again, I'd rather have them just sponsor Rust, why wasn't a gold or platinum sponsorship like structure considered without placing them on the board of directors.

  > We shouldn't be giving corporations too much power by letting them buy board seats in a foundation to steer the language, in this case Rust.
Are you saying I didn't state these concerns?

And even steve is concerned about the structure himself, if you have bothered to read the tweets.

Maybe you should actually read my comment and the links before replying.

yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
You know what this is about. I assume you've read the links in my comment and the tweets and now you're trying to gaslight the situation.

We shouldn't be giving corporations too much power by letting them buy board seats in a foundation to steer the language, in this case Rust.

Rust doesn't seem community led anymore.

yannoninator··on I refuse to let Amazon define Rust
Still don't know why we should let these big tech companies have board seats on programming language foundations for them to have the power to do this.

I feared this would happen months ago when Facebook joined the board and even talked to steve about my concerns [0] [1].

Unfortunately it has come true with no surprise.

yannoninator··on Stripe Tax
The cost of letting Stripe do all the work than moving over to another provider is extremely costly and can damage sales.

Unless your provider really sucks, it's always important to evaluate carefully and ideally stick with them unless it is really that bad.

yannoninator··on Stripe Tax
You still have to calculate all taxes from Stripe from these EU regions and then do that. For those using Stripe before this announcement it was a huge time sink.
