yannis··on Generation X Stymied by Baby Boomers Refusing to Give Up Jobs
According to my own calculations very few of the baby boomers will retire. Most of us spent our lives fighting a losing war, the inflation of the eighties, the rising housing prices. Schooling for the kids from being a very small amount of a family's life to eating a major portion of one's work efforts. Personally add one wrong move where I lost all my capital and still fighting to recover.

Most of us are still supporting our kids as they are the kids of the recessions or helping them with capital for their start-up and hey we don't want to rust in the port like an old ship. Many other of us have build Companies where these X's are currently employed.

yannis··on Innovative Courier Service
Change 'people' to Companies and 'lunch' to goods and you are onto something. My delivery van is going to Town X and is half-empty and you are only a block away needing to deliver something to Town X.
yannis··on CoffeeScript: JavaScript without the Fail (slides)
Why are the slides not using coffeescript?
yannis··on Extracting Meaning from Millions of Pages
How does this relate to freebase.org? I see some of the js ajaxing to the freebase API.
yannis··on Physicist cuts plane boarding time in half
It always puzzled me that a simpler algorithm has never been considered.

Passengers with heavier hand luggage or more than one piece (say hand-luggage and laptop) should be given back-seats. Anyone without hand luggage should be placed at the front seats.

yannis··on Weird, Birdlike Mystery Drone Crashes in Pakistan
It looks like a Festo bird see http://www.festo.com/cms/en_corp/11369_11439.htm#id_11439
yannis··on My weekend project: accounting.js, tiny JS library for money/currency formatting
Nice project. Check also some of the i18n classes in Google's Closure package (http://code.google.com/closure/library/), for more comprehensive routines and support for almost any currency.
yannis··on Anonymous hijacks Syria's government pages
good idea!
yannis··on Foxconn to replace workers with 1 million robots in 3 years
This will only happen, when robots will be able to dream. Feel safe!
yannis··on Ask HN: The project you're working on already exists. What to do?
Ever been to a food court? They all essentially sell food and more or less all of them make a success of it. You need to get to the core of the idea and breed a USP around it.
yannis··on MS-DOS is 30 years old today
My first encounter with viri. The waterfall virus and michelangelo.
yannis··on Timeseries data storage in MongoDB
Think positive, that is why you and I are on HN and our colleagues live in 30 year old specs space.
yannis··on Timeseries data storage in MongoDB
I am particularly interested in the software implementation. I am a Mechanical Engineer, involved with high rise construction. Looking to disrupt Building Management Systems.
yannis··on Timeseries data storage in MongoDB
Interesting presentation, would do better with some more details in a blog or pdf.
yannis··on Are you a zombie?
>Or, he says, if the operators transported you to their reality (which, of course, may itself be a simulation).

This is what probably happens when hackers die and go to paradise, they are transported to another computer system. Except of course teleportation would have been much more interesting.

yannis··on Think Quarterly: an Internet trends magazine from Google
I am not sure about the selection of content, but impressively nice and simple design that is amazingly fast! Another impressive fact is that it does not carry any ads!
yannis··on 32 GiB of texts from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society released
I find the statement of Greg Maxwell - who uploaded the text - courageous; quoting as to why he did not upload them anonymously:

"...that the obviously overzealous prosecutors of Aaron Swartz would probably accuse him of it and add it to their growing list of ridiculous charges. This didn't sit well with my conscience, and I generally believe that anything worth doing is worth attaching your name to.

I'm interested in hearing about any enjoyable discoveries or even useful applications which come of this archive..."

Any ideas for useful applications and legal implications?

yannis··on Architecting for the Cloud: Demo and Best Practices
This is a nice presentation. It would be great if there was a pdf to cover the services in the same logical way.
yannis··on Mass psychosis in the US
> Particularly the wording - "ask your doctor for ..."

This of course just adds to the stress and unhappiness as described by Barry Schwartz in this interesting TED talk http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_ch...

yannis··on Ask HN: The most useful equations/instructions in the event of an Apocalypse
Put some instructions using TeX/LaTeX code as it is probably the only language to survive an Apocalypse

      \documentclass{article}
      \begin{document}
      \def\alist{boil water, keep calm, move to countyside,
        carry a knife, take food, take clothes, take 3 books}
      \makeatletter
      \@for \i:=\alist \do{
        \texttt{\i $\rightarrow$ }
      }
      \makeatother
      \end{document}

yannis··on IE10 Platform Preview 2 Released
You can run the examples at http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Views/SiteMap/Default.html with your favourite browser and sneak at the code. Great if you are familiarizing yourself with HTLM5 and CSS3.
yannis··on Among the costs of war: $20 Billion in Air Conditioning
You can reduce the cost by a factor of 10, if you make the tents "underground".
yannis··on Erlang and First-Person Shooters in online games [pdf]
A good background to Erlang is Armstrong's thesis, it really reads like a popular book http://www.erlang.org/download/armstrong_thesis_2003.pdf. He discusses many of the points raised in the slides.
yannis··on Pi explained
Or you can see how ants calculate it in "The accuracy of Buffon’s needle: a rule of thumb used by ants to estimate area" at http://beheco.oxfordjournals.org/content/12/6/655.full.pdf
yannis··on Show HN: Google Charts done in Canvas, side project
You can have a look at http://code.google.com/p/closure-library/. What I did downloaded the files and peeked through all of them. Closure has not been very popular with the community, but is currently running all google applications such as Gmail.
yannis··on Show HN: Google Charts done in Canvas, side project
You can run the charts through Google's closure locally http://closure-library.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/closure/goog...

All the routines are public, there is no need to go through the API.

yannis··on What software do you use to create ebooks?
Certainly it has a steep learning curve but it has a very large community that supports its packages and now also has a friendly and helpful community http://tex.stackexchange.com/
