yannis··on Show HN: RinohType – A modern LaTeX in 6500 lines of Python
Markdown is very limited and you will soon hit a wall, when you get down to writing a thesis rather than a paper. For example if you want to write something to the Table of Contents which is not the section title itself.

       \section[short]{Long Title}
It is also possible within pdfLaTeX or LuaLaTeX to write shorter commands.

A GUI will eventually slow you down and is impossible to cater for the hundreds of commands including commonly used packages.

yannis··on Ex-NSA man Edward Snowden meets German MP
This would be a major point forward both for Germany as well as Snowden.
yannis··on Software Development Estimates: Where Do I Start?
Use the pi rule. Multiply the estimated duration by pi. Works for many other things too, besides software.
yannis··on Unlawful conveyance of fuel
Don't agree with the actions of the Pastor but the creative use of " unlawful conveyance of fuel" had me bemused.
yannis··on Fucking Sue Me (2011)
pud<insert number here>.com?
yannis··on Beyond passwords: New tools to identify humans
When I pass away my daughter will get an envelope with all my passwords. I would still like her to be able to open all my accounts.
yannis··on Week 23: Changes
You can both benefit from adopting the Halmo's Spiral technique http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/36521/963.
yannis··on Left with Nothing
Sure, I thought as much. I also agree with the ideal!
yannis··on Left with Nothing
If you want to borrow money to buy a car for example from an Islamic Bank they 'buy' the car and the sell it to you in so many installments at a profit. Same as charging interest by wrapped in 'profit' which is allowed in the Koran. Pathetic and hypocritical and the first to lock you in if you can't pay.
yannis··on Online LaTex editor
The only concern is to disable \write18 which is the TeX primitive command for access to the OS. This is easily disabled in a make up file or by recompiling the .exe pdflatex or similar. Really this is not a concern. The major issue with online editors is slow compilation.
yannis··on Ask HN: How Can I leave Syria now and get asylum in Europe (Germany)
I worked in Dubai and that is not correct. It is not a major issue, but Dubai currently has tightened on visa requirements for Syrians and is next to impossible for Qatar also, which would have been another alternative. I am moving again to Dubai next month for a two year stint. If you know anyone in Dubai that can push for you to get a visa, make it your first choice. At least it will give you time to make your next move.
yannis··on FlowType: font-size and line-height based on element width
The script can be extremely useful and the concerns raised regarding readability can be overcome using the min and max width. If you adjust line height in conjunction with font-size and font selection, text can be readable from 12pt and up, even at 10pt.
yannis··on Don't Comment Your Code - Write Better Code
I have been coding for over thirty years and the best reason for commenting your code is that the older you, will not remember what the younger you was thinking when he wrote the code.
yannis··on Heart Surgery in India for $1,583 Costs $106,385 in U.S.
There are plenty of them on ebay.
yannis··on Bootstrap 3 RC1
Responsive tables is a big plus for Zurb.
yannis··on The Financial Times on Edward Tufte
For anyone wishing to emulate Tufte's style in books using LaTeX, http://www.ctan.org/pkg/tufte-latex.
yannis··on A simple GUI to set up virtual machines for PHP development
Great work. What I find though is that a lot of WAMP/LAMP developers don't understand all these. You can add tremendous value to your Project by adding a few notes as to what are all the components and how do they fit together.
yannis··on Ideas for Computing
No. 36 Reminds me of Knuth's literate programming, which I attribute as the major reason for the continuing success of TeX/LaTeX. It needs a major rethink/revamp to move it on to the full spectrum of computer languages (what is available in python or haskell) is not fully satisfactory and has not really caught on.
yannis··on Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def) force-fed under standard Guantánamo Bay procedure
Another idea is to bring them to the US and treat them like normal citizens either charge them or let them go free.
yannis··on Petition to pardon Edward Snowden reaches 100,000 signatures
You mean "suspected" of espionage.
yannis··on Belief in black magic persists in Papua New Guinea
I am amazed as to how similar the word "sanguma" is to the Zulu word for a traditional healer (and also an area of witch burning) "sangoma". Anyone can offer some enlightenment on the linguistics?
yannis··on Show HN: I built a self-hosted Basecamp alternative. Try the demo
Looks very nice and will purchase a bit later on. If you interested in charging a couple of thou and add some customization for us, please email me.
yannis··on Poll: What is your age?
That is why one should scale images in ems. Old enough to remember when programming.
yannis··on Cyprus Bailout: Stupidity, Short-Sightedness, Something Else?
You are forgetting where and why the financial crisis started. Although in the US the financial institutions were saved by printing money in the rest of Europe the ECB controls the presses.
yannis··on Cyprus Bailout: Stupidity, Short-Sightedness, Something Else?
Agreed that no depositor should be hit. The failure here is that of the ECB which has not managed to regulate banks properly to reduce the risks of failure.
yannis··on The madness of the bailout in Cyprus
What I would like to see is transparency as how the funds of the bailout would be distributed and how they would be utilized at least for my forced percentage contribution. I am pissed off and at least in my case your assumption that money will not be pulled out of the banks is wrong.
yannis··on Announcing AWS Elastic Beanstalk for Node.js
Thanks, nice application. Love the color scheme.
yannis··on Authorea: Write research papers inside your browser
Strange enough I had a very similar idea see http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/83588/latex-mark-up-a... and made a prototype. Would be glad to share ideas if you want. Please contact via tex.sx chat.
yannis··on Precious Ink – On handwriting
This reminds me of Dijkstra's wordprocessor[1]. He had a pencil dangling from a string with a sign pointing to it saying "Word Processor".

yannis··on The Trouble With Online College
There is a possible flaw in the statistics. In many cases it is simply ...the customer walking away. (not the student failing)

For example not everyone is after "credits". I have enrolled for some online courses and have found the quality of instruction low, or the pace wrong for me. As my purpose was to increase my knowledge, I just bought a couple of books on the topic (much quicker and more in depth). On a current course with coursera, I am enjoying the course and the lecturer Michael S. Roth, especially as the course is diametrically opposite to my day to day working life. Not too sure if I can afford the time to write the essays for the assignments.
