yannis··on The Impact of the Lambda Calculus (1997) [pdf]
More likely a hat (following Russel's Principia) maybe simulated as a `/\` capital Greek letter "L" which then was changed to the Greek lower letter lambda. Church's book in 1941 was typed using what looks like a typewriter. The name was catchy though.
yannis··on A monad is a monoid in the category of endofunctors, what’s the problem?
His videos on you tube are also very informative.
yannis··on Data Organization in Spreadsheets
A technique I use, is to enter the data in an sqlite3 database, using SQLiteStudio and use spreadsheets for importing, exporting and presentation only.

yannis··on The Improbable Origins of PowerPoint
The best ever presentation that I remember was by Edward De Bono. Some of these are on the net. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5DK8XPUEaU He was really a gifted presenter and the man that invented "lateral thinking".
yannis··on How a South African ISP Hacks Its Subscribers Each Month
It has Indo-European roots https://lrc.la.utexas.edu/lex/master/0821. Although Tamil is Dravidian, probably a loan word.
yannis··on Why are so many babies born around 8AM?
I have four kids and watched all the births. I can assure you that in most cases, the nurses manipulate the timing, even with natural births, so that they allow the doctor to come at around 7h30. Of course there are many exceptions.
yannis··on Ask HN: Non-programming jobs that require programming mindset?
Large Project Construction Management. Has everything a programmer needs, logic, abstraction, modularizing the problem, keep an eye on the big picture, working under pressure, people skills, planning skills, mythical man-months and unfortunately long hours as well. It is very rewarding to see something rising literally on the sand (from where I am).
yannis··on Ngrok: Secure tunnels to localhost
For a part-time programmer Mechanical Engineer, it is such a gratifying task to use ngrok. I first came across it a couple of years back. Great Project, great development, open sourced and well written in go. https://github.com/inconshreveable/ngrok/tree/master/src/ngr...

It takes two seconds to deploy an application in the evening from my kitchen table, check it also on my mobile and the next day access it from work also and show it to co-workers.

Call it "usability" for Engineers!

yannis··on Aheui: Esoteric programming language designed for Hangul
Looking at the github repository there is nothing fundamentally earth shuttering here. It is mostly the normal way of interpreters/compilers representing everything with number codes and then mapping to characters.

For example: case 0: //ㄱ case 1: //ㄲ case 11: //ㅇ case 13: //ㅉ case 15: //ㅋ

If one goes back a good three decades plus and studies the source of Knuth's TeX, everything was represented by numbers and then all strings, even error messages resided in a TeX.Pool file.

yannis··on Study reveals substantial evidence of holographic universe
Think of it, as if God is pulling a joke on us or the physicists.
yannis··on What if jobs are not the solution but the problem?
And a self-cleaning toilet with that brush and software would be more effective and cheaper...
yannis··on Begin LaTeX in minutes
Here is an alternative way to master LaTeX http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/5713/963.
yannis··on Begin LaTeX in minutes
Try writing a 300 page book in HTML, create citations and bibliographies, table of contents etc. Then convert it to a pdf, say using Pandoc and then you will have a better understanding where TeX/LaTeX fits in. Write also some complicated formulae using MathML. Save the document and render it again in 30 years!

TeX was designed to typeset a document always the same way on any machine that could run it. You can typeset any of Knuth's papers from the 80s and they can still compile today. Maths as Barbara is fond of saying has a long shelf life.

yannis··on Exploring CLI Best Practices
Go has been a game changer for me also. There is also a very good package https://github.com/spf13/cobra that can make the development of complex CLIs easier.
yannis··on Appropriate Uses for SQLite
>Think PHP vs. Python, PHP may cut few corners but it's not ideal language for teaching generic concepts.

Maybe not even Python, suggest go or rust. My generation we started learning CS with Pascal and moved to C, when we had a bit more understanding.

yannis··on Longevity Inc
Hopefully we will forget earlier experiences, if we ever become anything near immortal.
yannis··on Khinchin's Constant
Interesting, but where can I use it?
yannis··on The Black Death: The Greatest Catastrophe (2005)
But it may give you a different perspective as to how to deal with the problems of native Americans and disadvantaged communities today.
yannis··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
Get some help http://tex.stackexchange.com waiting for four decades to get your figures to appear where you want them is too long...
yannis··on Ask HN: What are some examples of beautiful software?
Knuth's TeX. Set the standards for documentation, reliability, portability, typography, extensibility and scripting, is well into its fourth decade and is free software.
yannis··on Joe Cool – Why isn’t Trader Joe’s on social media?
But perhaps they are missing an opportunity to become a "hub" of their communities and replace the now mostly gone local newspapers.
yannis··on Lazarus Version 1.6
Thanks for posting this. I am an old Pascal programmer. Love the language and did a phd thesis entirely in the old turbo Pascal IDE. (All programming + using the editor for LaTeX files).
yannis··on Ask HN: How do you get back the ability to concentrate?
Just hang in there. Your mind and gut feeling is trying to tell you where you should be going. Try writing down "where" your mind wanders off and see if you can identify the "why".

Don't worry and there is not a single programmer that cannot "concentrate". You probably got stuck in a job that demotivates you with possibly the wrong people around you.

You can also try and get active with something that has nothing to do with your main work, i.e, a hobby such as photography and see if it helps.

yannis··on SummarAI – Summarization and Sentiment Analysis
What is this? apikey3_6g4agvfjdvochfub5nfpcbh...? Try http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/01/zika-virus-16012815173..., captures js and cdn and other junk in tags. Seems cleaning algo needs some work. Great work though.
yannis··on Viewer.js – JavaScript image viewer
I also dislike "gallery" type of presentations. I also prefer an example similar to the "bostonglobe.com", perhaps with some blazy effects http://dinbror.dk/blazy/.
yannis··on Perma.cc helps scholars and courts create permalinks of the web sites they cite
>Perma.cc is developed and maintained by the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at the Harvard Law School Library. Perma.cc is administered by a consortium of libraries, with each library assisting its local journals and faculty users.

This is a problem for many people, so hopefully this will survive.
