Thats not how anything works. Having impact and having control over impact are two totally different things. You can get one atom to produce a nuclear chain reaction and level the planet, but that specific atom doesnt get into a position to do that by itself. If Peter Thiel had control over anything why run away and hide in New Zealand?

These people are like that atom. They do have special traits and play a role in pulling enough chimps together and starting reactions sort of like uranium. But once you understand the process and know how to find uranium there are much more interesting things to do than worship the uranium.

yann2··on Ask HN: Startup success is simply about luck. Do you agree?
Luck depends on the type of people around you. If they are ambitious, highly energetic, persistent then interesting things are guaranteed to happen. The more such people enter your life "luck" will keep increasing. But for them to want to enter your orbit or pull you into theirs you must create reasons.
yann2··on Shlinkedin – Satirical Social Network
:) great collection. Addendum to 5 - let the world know at the end of each day who the highest up and downvoters are.
yann2··on Web-based editor
Start disecting how the brain works and its very similar one stack of garbage hacks on top of another constantly accumulating over time.
yann2··on China on the Cusp of a 'Profound Transformation'
Well its a large cattle herd. So the amount of flight and drainage required to weaken it would probably require a new continent to appear out of the sea to absorb it all. Its basically unknown how much damage they can take.
yann2··on The World After Capital (2018)
Oversimplifying the universe only leads to misunderstandings and false choices.
yann2··on Ask HN: How can I navigate big tech company politics?
Where your path leads depends fully on the people you have around you.

Every org has folk who are hubs in the network. Info flows between groups through them. The closer you are to as many hubs as possible, the greater the chance of you being pulled into things. Getting closer to people usually means spending a whole lot of time working out what others need.

It can be as simple as lightening the mood when people are stressed, being a sounding board, solving some small issue of theirs, giving them info, helping them get connected with people who solve their issues, organizing group activities etc etc etc. The main thing is dont just do it for tech folk. You do it with sales, marketing, finance, HR, legal etc...and sooner or later you will hear about things going on even without asking. People will protect you and prop you up. Thats when you know you are becoming a hub.

Only caveat is know what your values and boundaries are. Signal them in low key way to everyone. Sooner or later either misguided ppl or total douchebags will show up and its very easy to get trapped in the wrong network.

yann2··on Ask HN: What can /u/spez realistically do?
True about the type of people drawn to it. But I doubt he and his team worry about it as much as the mods think they worry about it. Like wikipedia they have survived quite a lot of drama in the past.
yann2··on Ask HN: All this technology – what's the goal?
Maybe work out a way to measure whether people are generating energy in others or draining energy in others when they use tech. Starting bottom up, as in the people immediately around you and then expanding that circle.
yann2··on Ask HN: What can /u/spez realistically do?
Remove the mods. Tantrum throwers as opposed to solution oriented folk, should not be entertained for too long or it just gets worse.
yann2··on Amazon CEO unveils 55k tech jobs in his first hiring push
Does it matter? You'll have Amazon on your resume. Its a door opener for whatever job you apply for next.
yann2··on Ask HN: Resources for understanding shifts in Chinese policy
pfft...no one knows what is going on including the Chinese. These are ever changing complex systems. Its not even like looking at a hurricane, but more like looking at a few thousand of them interacting. All the 6 inch chimp brain can do with that type of input is produce errors. So the gap between what Shiny Joe Rogan or a China Expert says tends to zero.
yann2··on Mob justice is trampling democratic discourse
You got to deal with them the same way you deal with a herd of Buffalo. As long as the herd is running in circles, its not going to run of a cliff or into the sea.

So keep them running in circles and stay out of the center.

Stone age man knew how to do that, so I am quite confident we will survive Twitter and the stampeding herds it generates.

yann2··on Stop Waiting for Godot
I like the enthusiam godot is generating in kids or people new to complex programming environments. You can see the energy in the chatrooms, forums and subreddit. Really creative stuff from the younger crowd showing the tool is getting out of the way allowing them to express what they want quicker.

Also suprising to me was seeing an app like Pixelorama built on top of godot. The fact they chose it over .net, java, gtk etc is pretty cool.

yann2··on The Death of Behavioral Economics
Ofcourse they should be taken seriousiusly. What do you want the "millions" to do instead? Pretend everyone is rational? Once upon a time we tried classifying every chimp according to the big 5 personality trait model. Now thanks to Fuckerberg & Co and their data, you can find almost 100 different traits in the chimp troupe. Who knows what the upper limit is? Its like the phase chemistry went through where suddenly new elements were being discovered every week. It all just shows us the world is much more complicated than we think.
yann2··on Launch HN: Kalam Labs (YC S21) – Science games and live game streaming for kids
Porn and icecream also have high engagement. Dont get carried away by metrics that have nothing to do with measuring Learning and Development outcomes.

When it comes to education, people must understand the implications of the Explore Exploit tradeoff that shapes how many curious chimps a chimp troupe can tolerate.

yann2··on A majority of young adults in the U.S. live with their parents
Its the US. Lots of parents have mental health issues. Nothing good happens to kids who stick around in unhealthy environments. Which is to say the path that works depends a lot on the type of people you are around.
yann2··on For First Time, Half of Americans Favor Defending Taiwan If China Invades
The plan is to use Dragons after eggs were found in Henan.
yann2··on The Social Dilemma is propaganda disguised as a health warning
Its is used like alcohol or drugs as a misguided coping mechanism. But the difference is alcohol and drugs are not free.
yann2··on Ask HN: Does social media use lead to mental/physical fatigue?
Sorry should have added "for free" . Illicit drugs arent free.
yann2··on Ask HN: Does social media use lead to mental/physical fatigue?
Social media is available 24*7 providing pleasure and elevating threat. Unlike any other drug.

Every time the brain has to handle pleasure or threat its using energy. Its not designed to do it all the time. So if you are feeling drained its a signal to take a break from the endless stream of pleasure and threat.

yann2··on Ask HN: Is it worth to look for a job as a team?
I have seen it happen so its possible. I worked at a startup where the founders had built an initial version of their product that required a total rewrite. They had customers and funding so were looking for an experienced architect. The eventual pick brought his whole prior team over. And it worked out quite well for them.

As long as one of you gets into a position where you are responsible for building a team should be very possible. So I guess target such jobs and definately play up the fact you have a team ready to go. Building out good teams can take a lot of time so managers will see it as a definate plus.

Edit:on second thoughts you dont have to even get into a position where you are in charge, you just have to get into a team that is in growth mode/expanding. Who you recommend will have more weight than what comes through the HR pipeline.

yann2··on Hackers are trying to topple Belarus’s dictator, with help from the inside
Why are they broadcasting they have internal support?
yann2··on Ask HN: Understanding a theory by learning it’s history vs. just how it is now?
Both paths are valid and they are often intertwined. But be clear Learning happens under 3 conditions

1. A good environment - low/no distraction

2. Mentors - people who know more AND know how to teach

3. Repetition. The brain has 200 billion neurons with a trillion connections. Nothing is static about that network. The connnections are constantly changing depending on what gets fed in. So if you want to understand something its all about Repeating the same input again and again until connections solidify

yann2··on My dead dad’s journal
>Addiction tends to defeat cognition, awareness...

>Unfortunately society does not understand..

Both statements are misleading. The issue is not what the addict or society understands.

Anyone can understand how chess or baseball works, but to be a good player is another matter entirely.

yann2··on Charlie Watts has died
If Native Americans displayed undesirable behavior such as not accepting his "fair price" for their land George did have them "extirpated".
yann2··on Is Hacker News a good predictor of future tech trends?
Actual punks or just punks?
yann2··on John Carmack visits Starbase
There are no aerospace factories that aren't impressive. Like termite nests, whether they are builing anything useful or not is another matter.
yann2··on Ask HN: How do you manage a project you don't believe in?
You havent mentioned why the CEO is backing the project. This is an important detail.

Many projects start out vague and ridiculous that turn out well in the long run. Depends on many factors. Not just technical quality.

yann2··on Just how far can you travel by bus from London in 24 hours?
Depends on the company. The US has no dearth of characters. And most of them seem to travel by bus. One time I ended up next to a dude who would excitedly point out every prision along the highway he had been a guest at. Another time a "paranormal investigator" with a 2 inch thick binder of haunted houses and she wanted me to go through every page.
