yankoff··on Programming with an Aggressive Posture
Also, yelling at your code might help to debug faster.
yankoff··on The World is Socialist
Yes, bad things happen to everyone, what point does it really prove? Her philosophy was nothing about building a paradise for "good" people where nothing bad will ever happen.
yankoff··on Computer Programming as an Art (1974) [pdf]
I really enjoyed reading this paper.

We shouldn't live in the lap of luxury all the time, since that tends to make us lethargic. The art of tackling miniproblems with all our energy will sharpen our talents for the real problems, and the experience will help us to get more pleasure from our accomplishments on less restricted equipment.

yankoff··on Ask HN: How much of your time is spent on classical algorithmic problems?
No one spends time on job solving "classical algorithmic problems", they are solved already ;) Unless you work in research and looking for more efficient solutions.

But understanding algorithms brings you to a new level and opens a wide scope of other problems you can solve by applying this knowledge.

If you are not using knowledge about algorithms in your programming job it doesn't mean such knowledge is useless. Maybe that means your problems are not hard enough for this knowledge to be applied.

yankoff··on The Pirate Bay is now hosted in North Korea
Someone send them this story http://www.northkoreanrefugees.com/2007-09-atbirth.htm.
yankoff··on An Unremarkable Event in the Tenderloin
They sell you an opportunity to feel good about yourself.
yankoff··on Code.org – Dedicated to growing computer programming education
What's the matter with this "Let's teach everyone to code" thing? Why code and not, say, medicine? Is there such a lack of engineers?
yankoff··on How H-1B Visas Are Screwing Tech Workers
The point is that laws are such that they encourage you to leave the country after you've been educated and gotten good work experience. Which is crazy. You'd imagine there should be an easier way to become a permanent resident after you worked in a country for a while.
yankoff··on How H-1B Visas Are Screwing Tech Workers
As for why many of them don't become permanent residents: it is quite hard to jump from H1B to permanent residency. I'm facing this problem myself at the moment and there's no easy solution. Living in such uncertainty about your future is hard and many people are just like 'screw this' and leave after some period of time. It's not like they want to leave and take their work with them.
yankoff··on Aaron Swartz's FBI File Released
For any case or only for cases that were closed? And they don't even remove SSN, addresses and phone numbers?
yankoff··on Aaron Swartz's FBI File Released
I don't understand. Was this file officially released?
yankoff··on Man uses GitHub as a bug tracker for his house
we tried to use pivotal tracker for the same thing
yankoff··on Techcrunch infected with malware - chrome warning
No warning for me
yankoff··on I’m Bored. What’s Next?
Of course you'll get bored if your primary source of tech news delivers you only pinterests and instagrams.
yankoff··on A Disabled Honduran Man Who Has Been Building A Homemade Helicopter (short film)
This guy has been doing this project for more than 50 years. http://www.indiegogo.com/round2everythingisincredible/x/1841...
yankoff··on WebTCP: Making TCP Connections From Browser
It looks like with websockify you have to run a server with their wrapper to make it work
yankoff··on WebTCP: Making TCP Connections From Browser
Yep, and i wrote about differences to such approach in the post. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a hack, I'm not saying people should stop doing it the old way.
yankoff··on WebTCP: Making TCP Connections From Browser
What would you use to achieve the same thing with Redis?
yankoff··on WebTCP: Making TCP Connections From Browser
Well, you didn't read the post apparently and only a title :(
yankoff··on Let's Make a Single Page Web
Exactly. But I'd go further with this thought. I think big part of the problem are technologies that are used to build Web apps. HTTP, HTML/CSS and even JS are good exactly for what they were supposed to be good for: creating simple documents and serving them one by one by request. And we are using them to try to build real software.

If the difference in experience between web and desktop apps is going to keep decreasing, eventually, I think the stack of technologies will be completely changed.

yankoff··on Drone Olympics in SF
This is not an official announcement though, I'm not an organizer of the event. I think they announced it amongst groups interested in robotics long ago. It just happend that I posted a link on HN today ;)

As for the copter, you can buy it in Costco, no need to wait!

yankoff··on Show HN: Hide Messages in Images with Steganography
Nice. I implemented it in Ruby once https://github.com/yankov/steganograph
yankoff··on Bridge is a new RPC framework for building modular services
I built something similar but simpler not long ago https://github.com/yankov/nourl But it only supports ruby on a server side and JS on a client. You guys can simplify your framework in many ways by following convention over configuration principle.
yankoff··on A day in the life of a CEO
A well structured, balanced life with the focus on family. It possibly leads to some degree of happiness and stability, but this seems so boring for being a CEO. Where's the action! Most the time seems wasted on minor daily routines that could be squeezed into 1 hour.
yankoff··on How to Find Facebook Users on Match.com by Using Face Recognition Tools
Ha, they have something like that already http://face.com/blog/klik-is-alive-and-we-have-the-party-pic...
yankoff··on Tell HN: Room open in Hacker House in San Jose
How far you are from the caltrain station? I have to commute to Menlo Park every day ;)
yankoff··on Toss Your Expectations Into the Ocean
Absolutely agree. To make an assumption about the world, test it and find out you were wrong is way better than to not make any assumptions and just being passive. And what upsets me more is that such 'zen' philosophy become more and more popular. Like relax, lower your standards, don't have expectations, don't care for work too much, go play soccer. This is how western civilization fades away becoming more lazy and less competitive.

Why is it bad to constantly challenge yourself and the world around you. Humans are great because they can change the circumstances and not to surrender to them. Although often times it comes through terrible mistakes, but the process is moving forward.

yankoff··on Ask HN: Ideas for projects with $2-4k/mo profit.
Freelance and job doesn't count. Should be a single project that provides a service or sells some product.
yankoff··on I have something like craigslist linked to a map. Testers wanted
I'm not sure yet in which direction I should move it, but I wanted an app which allows to quickly post and find geo-located ads and messages divided by topics.
yankoff··on Review my Idea: Building Prototypes as a Business in Silicon Valley
Why would you do this instead of starting the company yourself? Lack of ideas?

I have enough ideas and always do side-projects. But I still have to earn the living. Just looking for a more interesting way to do that.
