yaegers··on Windows 7 computers are automatically starting the Windows 10 upgrade
I also disabled the service "Windows Update" in services.msc.

Interesting thign happened. I stopped the service but left it on "Automatic (Delayed Start)". Came back a while later and the service was magicall restarted. Could have been anticipated by me. So I stopped the service again and set it to "Manual". Came back a while later and, you guessed it, Windows Update service was restarted. So I now set it to "deactivated". That was yesterday. I am really curoous to see if it still comes back to life.

yaegers··on HTC's Vive will cost $799, ship in early April
>the dangling cable problem isn't so severe when seated.

That is exactly why I don't get how people say the room scale thing makes the Vive the winner in this VR race.

As long as there are cords involved, being able to move around is not a game changer. Especially the way the Vive does things. Didn't HTC say they adressed the issue of being caught in the cords by making them visible in VR? Talk about immersion break. There you are, in the VR world and you look around and see the cords that actually bind you to a very narrow sector in real life.

This whole room scale VR can only become a thing once the tech is wireless and by there own statements, that is still a looong way from being a reality. Especially seeing as these are the 1st generation devices, I say you save yourself some money and get the rift seeing as you will not get much out of that feature that only the vive offers currently.

yaegers··on Don't use VPN services
>I also agree that the best VPN is one you set up yourself on a VPS that you control.

But aren't you "just" renting the VPS from companys like Digital Ocean just as you would rent the VPN access from somewhere else?

So if the VPN seller has means and probably does log your traffic and will give you up, how would a VPS seller like Digital Ocean be different? Surely they log your traffic as well? I mean, they have to if they offer dynamic pricing by usage and by offering packages like 1TB or 2TB traffic.

yaegers··on f.lux for iOS is no longer available
That's what I was wondering, too.

I think Apple may have been a bit too generous with this offering. How long does the code signing stay valid this way? Forever?

I think it would have been sufficient for the majority of use cases if an app sideloaded like this would only be valid for like 12 - 24 hours. I mean, as you wrote, this system is supposed to be for devs who want to test their apps on devices without having to pay for the dev program. I think 12 hours would be enough time to judge you progress on device. Since you are going to test many iterations of that app, you are going to deploy it often anyway. Why would there be a need to have those apps work forever?

I realize there are edge cases where some people would want a longer, broad beta test for their app but is that really necessary for such a "free" option? Surely if you plan out your app of such scale and you arrive at that point in time to warrant a week long beta test you will very likely deploy on the app store anyway so you might as well buy into the 99 bucks a year program to correctly sign your apps.

Had Apple directly limited the time sideloaded apps like that work and made it public that this is "just" a feature aimed at developers to become interested in iOS development, this whole thing could have been avoided.
