yadaeno··on Work after work: Notes from an unemployed new grad watching the job market break
A much better solution is something like the hire act.
yadaeno··on AI isn't replacing jobs. AI spending is
Something like the hire act bill is the only solution: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/297...
yadaeno··on The Case That A.I. Is Thinking
What if we learned that brains reduce to the same basic mechanics?
yadaeno··on Vitamin D reduces incidence and duration of colds in those with low levels
Allergy shots work very well.
yadaeno··on The email they shouldn't have read
Too bad they are in EU which seems to not value free speech legally or culturally.
yadaeno··on China's 200M gig workers are a warning for the world
That is in large part to our nightmare immigration system.
yadaeno··on China's 200M gig workers are a warning for the world
It has nothing to do with what trump wants. If public opinion changes he will be voted out it’s that simple.
yadaeno··on The H-1B Visa Program and Its Impact on the U.S. Economy
“Manufacturing consent” should be required reading for all Americans.

These economists expressed the correct viewpoint that benefits the capital class so their viewpoint and credentials are validated and legitimized. “Right-thinking economists” are promoted while economists that have views that dont benefit multinational corporate interest are pushed to the fringes.

This is extremely well documented and when you see it spelled out in the book you will not be able to see the world in the same way.

Lex Friedman was nobody until he published a study that self driving cars were safe while Elon musk was in the midst of legal battles for his cars killing people. Lex Friedman is a “right thinking” academic so next thing you know Elon musk is talking on his podcast calling Lex “the smartest person in the world” despite having almost no credentials.

yadaeno··on We Found the Hidden Cost of Data Centers. It's in Your Electric Bill [video]
Maybe it is? The US has ample land and money to build out clean energy, there’s zero excuse not to be adding capacity.

It’s literally the governments job to build out the infrastructure for society to thrive. Don’t blame technology for getting better, blame the government for not doing their job.

yadaeno··on We Found the Hidden Cost of Data Centers. It's in Your Electric Bill [video]
I feel like the solution is for the state owned power company to add capacity to scoop up the additional revenue. This is quite literally an opportunity to advance society while generating more tax revenue and *improving* public services.

Blaming tech for using power is regressive, the real issue here is bad energy policy.

yadaeno··on Evidence for hepatitis C virus involvement in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia
Hep C is already curable with antivirals, wouldn’t we notice this with existing treatments if this theory was correct?
yadaeno··on Tao on “blue team” vs. “red team” LLMs
I think you are confusing “security through obscurity” and “defense in depth”.

You can add layers of high quality simple systems to increase your overall security exponentially, think using a VPN behind TOR etc.

yadaeno··on Scientists may have found a way to eliminate chromosome linked to Down syndrome
There’s another side to this. They place a large burden on the people taking care of them. Many parents also report that they regret conceiving children with Down syndrome.
yadaeno··on CBA hiring Indian ICT workers after firing Australians
Your system of drawing lines and forming “tribes” within social classes reminds me of the caste system.
yadaeno··on What I learned gathering nootropic ratings
> It would be strange if our brains had "one weird trick" to perform a lot better with no downsides, since if it existed evolution should've found it

It would not be strange at all. We are constantly evolving and so is our environment. This argument is very similar to the "efficient market fallacy", if the market was perfectly efficient there would be no opportunity to create value, but in reality it is highly imperfect.

yadaeno··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Iran is the aggressor here. Iran has been funding and arming multiple proxies to fire missles into Israel for the past 50 years
yadaeno··on TI to invest $60B to manufacture foundational semiconductors in the U.S.
Iran has been attacking Israel for 50 years through proxies. I don’t think it’s a clear “attack vs defense”. Also now is the time to deal with Iran and restore a sane government before they have a chance to add nukes to the equation.
yadaeno··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
Selling negative convenience very succinctly describes the issue.

You already have to spend time researching airlines, buying tickets in advance, etc. but now in addition to that there is a completely contrived layer of bullshit I need to know about.

You can extend this concept even further and imagine literal series of hoops that you must jump through to earn “cash back” on your ticket at the end of the flight.

yadaeno··on Airlines are charging solo passengers higher fares than groups
Same with points systems. Why am I forced to understand your made up currency and status system to get the full value of my money.

There might be some benefits to price discrimination (which is in effect what a point systems achieves) but the collective time wasted dicking around with points isn’t worth it. Make all point systems illegal.

yadaeno··on OpenAI asks White House for relief from state AI rules
Can you explain why this is associated with fascism specifically, and not any other form of government which has high levels of oligarchical corruption (like North Korea, Soviet Russia, etc).

I am not saying you’re wrong, but please educate me why is this form of corruption/cronyism is unique to fascism?

yadaeno··on Air-Traffic Staffing Rules Tightened at Reagan Airport After Fatal Crash
> The FAA later allowed lower-ranking tower employees such as supervisors to make that call so long as they considered factors like traffic levels, weather and VIP moments.

What is a VIP moment? Does this mean they care more about safety when there is a VIP flying?

yadaeno··on Who's Afraid of Peter Thiel? A New Biography Suggests We All Should Be (2021)
> (talking about gates and Epstein) …This is extremely significant because it substantially increases the amount of specific, known meetings between the two, and shows that they were meeting on specific dates late into 2014—after, in fact, the relationship had caused conflict between Gates and his then wife, Melinda French Gates, which would ultimately end in their divorce.

yadaeno··on "Do you not like money?"
Agreed. If you take it to the extreme, money is a tool that reduces your life-energy to a numerical value which is anti-human.
yadaeno··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
I agree but condemning government budget cuts because USAID seems reactionary. I think the spirit of cutting budget is still overall popular, and is impossible to do painlessly.

Also in the context of federal budget, 1% is a huge number since most of the budget (like social security, interest payments, and Medicaid) is non negotiable.

~30B a year (USAID budget) is enough to make improvements domestically, e.g free college for 10% of students, transportation, housing, etc.

yadaeno··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
Even the various single payer models in Europe and asia still have insurance companies.

The difference is that in these systems the government has some stake — whether it’s providing the public insurance fund, or owning the company itself — so that the government is financially incentivized to reduce costs.

In the US case everything is private so all parties are incentivized to increase costs as much as possible.

We really should to copy the Bismarck model. Public owned “public fund”, heavily regulated private insurance and care.

yadaeno··on US government struggles to rehire nuclear safety staff it laid off days ago
The way he rolls his eyes and facial expression suggests MDMA or possibly adderall.
yadaeno··on IT Unemployment Rises to 5.7% as AI Hits Tech Jobs
AI = aggressively offshoring jobs as fast as humanly possible.
yadaeno··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
This theory feels like it’s making tons of assumptions and leans heavily on semantics.

In a factory you have many components operating near or at capacity. In a high growth environment you want all of your components working at capacity to explore the problem space and optimize.

yadaeno··on Firebase bill is usually $50, but I was surprised to see a $70k bill in one day
Almost all GCP services have quota by default that you need to manually increase.
