yacin··on I'm Getting a Whiff of Iain Banks' Culture
not sure i'd lump Iran in with Venezuela here. also far too early for either to say if either will lead to a "win" whatever that means.
yacin··on [dead]
just read to your kids, damn
yacin··on We're in the wrong moment
Problem solving and having the problem solved for you aren't the same thing.
yacin··on Undergraduate shows that searches within hash tables can be much faster
it's common in math/cs theory papers to have the order of authors be alphabetical rather than in descending order of contribution.
yacin··on Dragonsweeper — A minesweeper game that requires observation
if you see the 8 slimes, they cluster in a

    SSS
    SLS
pattern that can be rotated where the Ss are 8 strength slimes and the L is the 1 strength lich that, when killed, reveals all 8/5 strength slimes on the map. if the pattern is obvious from what you have revealed so far, it's worth it to kill the lich to give more map knowledge. but yeah, save the 8s for leveling up late game.
yacin··on 1.15 * 100 = 149.99999999999999 except in Ruby
sbcl does it right:

* (* 1.15 100) 115.0

yacin··on wu.js -- A lazy, functional Javascript library
Killer name.
yacin··on Every Black Hole Contains Another Universe?
They mention in the article that Poplowski's contribution is providing a new mathematical model for this old idea.
yacin··on Success of a Marriage in 15 Minutes?
Sweet, delicious over-fitting. What a way to start the day d;D.
yacin··on Atlanta HackerNews Meetup #2: Thursday Mar 11th 7pm at Rira Pub
How regular are HackerNews meetups in Atlanta? Is there a calendar for future ones? I'd like to go, but I'll be out of town this Thursday :|.
yacin··on Charles P. Thacker Wins ACM Turing Award
Agreed. It's also nice to see Xerox PARC (indirectly) pushed to the spotlight. I think a lot of CS students in my generation (and younger) are unfamiliar with all the cool stuff PARC did back in the day.

The book "Dealers of Lightning" is fantastic for anyone interested in the stories behind Xerox PARC and all the other tech achievements that happened there.

yacin··on I'm a Barbie Girl in a CS World
You're clearly missing the point. You don't have to look/act like a geeky girl just to be in CS. What the author looks like makes no difference.
yacin··on Return-Oriented Programming without Returns (on the x86)
Memory safety _can_ be compromised in a cool, albeit unlikely, scenario: http://www.cs.princeton.edu/~sudhakar/papers/memerr.pdf

But for all practical purposes, you're right :)
