yAnonymous··on Our experience launching a paid, proprietary product on Linux
>you're just not going to get any significant number of home Linux users or enthusiasts to pay for your software.

More like no significant number of home users are using Exchange.

If every software that runs on Windows ran on Linux without restrictions, that would be the end of Windows right now and it's exactly what Microsoft are currently preparing for.

They are shifting profits from Windows licenses to the app store and user data/ads to compete with free operating systems and they're trying hard to appeal to Linux users.

yAnonymous··on Our experience launching a paid, proprietary product on Linux
It's good to have a working Exchange client for Linux, proprietary or not. I'd hope that they polish Hiri a bit before they implement Gmail and IMAP support though, because it does have some rough edges, mostly with the UI.

As for the FOSS enthusiasts, I'd recommend ignoring them.

yAnonymous··on Intel patches new ME vulnerabilities
At that point you should just buy AMD, if only to not support a company like Intel with such a bad security track record.
yAnonymous··on GitLab 11.1 released with security dashboards and enhanced code search
Yes, do everything this anonymous person says, because their post has 3 upvotes.

Seriously though, listening to everything the community says is a certain recipe for failure. User feedback is an indicator, not more. Implementation details and the general direction of the software have to be based on sane decisions by the development team, not the community.

yAnonymous··on ‘Star Citizen’ Court Case Reveals the Messy Reality of Crowdfunding a $200M Game
In my opinion the game looks great so far and I hope they take their time to finish it.

Should they manage to match their own high expectations, the game will be played for years to come, like WoW, and it'd better have a good base then.

yAnonymous··on European Commission fines Google €4.34B in Android antitrust case
That's for Öffi.

When Google remove free apps that are used by millions of users from the play store for weeks, because one of their own automated tests fails, such fines can't come soon enough.

yAnonymous··on Chaos Computer Club criticizes police action
Both organizations who are now complaining (Zwiebelfreunde and CCC) have extremist tendencies.
yAnonymous··on Chaos Computer Club criticizes police action
The CCC have colaborated with extremists for some time.
yAnonymous··on How Reddit plans to make money through advertising
How's Voat doing these days?
yAnonymous··on Something about functions in Bash (2017)
>In part because the more bash a dev knows the more effective they are at life in general

At some point, using bash isn't effective anymore. It's great and all, but an important skill is knowing when to use it and when not to.

yAnonymous··on Designing Google Maps for Motorbikes
>I live in Australia and the heat of the sun on the phone + google maps using CPU will literally shut off the phone as it reaches 50C+

Get a better maps app, there's an abundance of them. Google Maps for mobile is just a resource hog with a shitty UI.

yAnonymous··on Police search homes of Zwiebelfreunde board members and OpenLab in Augsburg
The CCC are in no position to complain. They have become too political and openly support left extremist groups. They allow talks by Antifa members and they have Antifa flags in their centers [1]. These are people who threaten and practice violence for political reasons and are watched by state police.

yAnonymous··on Police search homes of Zwiebelfreunde board members and OpenLab in Augsburg
Calling every conservative or even people who share some conservative ideas Nazis is an entry requirement for the Antifa. The talks I mentioned, which you'll easily find on Google, are painting the same picture.

Don't bother replying. I'll repost this, because I want the CCC's political affliction to be more visible. It's important to understand the context of their post.

yAnonymous··on Police search homes of Zwiebelfreunde board members and OpenLab in Augsburg
>Who? When? Where?

The CCC and most of its members - and they don't exactly hide it. The CCC founder was on the far left and that's exactly the course it took.

They have talks by Antifa activists. They have combined CCC and Antifa logos hanging in their centers: https://twitter.com/DandelionInaBox/status/90147462783431884...

German Antifa are about as extremist as it gets and they are rightly watched by the state police. They threaten and attack citizens and police for political reasons and do about everything else that's considered extremist.

tl;dr: Left extremism is openly accepted by the CCC.

Now you can downvote this post too, but these are verifiable facts.

>Oh, you are the one with the flagged comment in this thread.

Which perfectly illustrates my point. I haven't said anything offensive. People are treating extremism differently depending on which side they're on and that's stupid. HN is very far left, so this opinion is unpopular.

yAnonymous··on Google to developers: We take down your extension because we can
tl;dr: Need to contact someone at Google? File a copyright complaint.

--------------

I was in the same situation, having the correct logon credentials for my account, but the system refused to believe it's me and asked for proof, but I forgot the security answer.

Ended up filing a bogus copyright complaint, knowing they can't handle that automatically.

I told them there was a copyright violation and proof was in my locked account (a picture of a seven-legged spider...).

They unlocked the account long enough for me to move my accounts elsewhere.

Fuck Google.

yAnonymous··on Blocked by JSConf.eu Twitter account
>I am strongly opposed to private blacklists

HN uses similar approaches. Just saying. You can have tons of points, but if some of your recent posts were unpopular for whatever reason, your account will be limited to the point that you can't really take part in conversations.

yAnonymous··on Norwegian Consumer Council report on how tech companies use dark patterns [pdf]
You have a pretty great country, so I'd say what you're doing works and I'd advise against changing it.

The current agreements give you the freedom to renegotiate should the need arise. You can't do that when you have full membership.

yAnonymous··on We're Baking ‘Have I Been Pwned’ into Firefox and 1Password
Seems like a good solution. I was looking for this on the official HIBP website, but it's not mentioned there.

Going public with this would probably be a good time to update the website.

yAnonymous··on We're Baking ‘Have I Been Pwned’ into Firefox and 1Password
My problem with haveibeenpwned is that when you haven't been pwned, you've just handed them your mail address.

Is there anything to alleviate those concerns other than "trust us, we're not saving emails from queries"?

yAnonymous··on Avoid FIFA World Cup CDN Issues
Use a VPN from a location where you know the service has enough bandwidth.
yAnonymous··on Facebook Location History View
* travel suggestions for other places you might like

* ad targeting based on specific locations you've been to

Sounds useful enough to keep the data and there might be more uses in the future.

yAnonymous··on Lobotomizing Gnome
The problem with Gnome is not that it's too bloated or spartan -although it does use twice as much memory as KDE and four times as much as LXDE- but that many parts of the UX are plain stupid.
yAnonymous··on Loot boxes are obviously gambling
With digital goods, the distributor can stack the odds against you to make you spend more money. They know what you want and they can make sure you don't get it.

And then you possibly don't realize how much you've spent, because unlike real cards, digital ones don't pile up.

It's definitely different.

yAnonymous··on GDPR: US news sites unavailable to EU users over data protection rules
Honest hypothetical question... my file hosting website is in New Zealand, my servers are in New Zealand. Why would I care about US laws?

Asking for a friend.

yAnonymous··on Microsoft’s commitment to GDPR, privacy and customers’ control of their own data
>Respecting the privacy rights of consumers everywhere

Anyone who tried to disable the Windows 10 tracking knows what a load of shit that statement is.

yAnonymous··on Chrome updated to temporarily remove the autoplay policy for the Web Audio API
The very last thing we need is even more permission popups.
yAnonymous··on Completely Silent Computer
Completely agreed. When GPUs do this, I just declare them defective and send them back. It comes down to a lack of quality of the electrical components and simply shouldn't be a problem, especially with the current GPU prices.
yAnonymous··on Completely Silent Computer
High pitched electric buzzing or hard disk screeching seem to be worse than fan noise nowadays with all the great coolers available.

That being said, within a year of using Windows 10 four (!) of my hard drives have begun making loud screeching sounds. They're technically fine, but still unusable.

yAnonymous··on GPU-equipped Ryzen Pros give AMD what it needs to conquer the corporate desktop
Agreed, they're great. If only they weren't so unreliable with Linux. First the segfault bug and then there's still random freezes in idle state:
