y4mi··on Germany: Data retention to be abolished
I wish it did, but honestly all the mask deals were pocket change (you can't really say the mask scandal, considering how many there were).

Take our Kanzler for example. He was involved in stealing over 50 million €. (CumEx) Not only didn't he get punished, now he's also in the highest position of the German government. And I wish it was an extreme example, but it's really not.

The health minister is responsible for the current health care crisis, which he kicked off over 10 years ago. Thanks to him clinics prefer to amputate diabetes patients over treatment, because it pays more.

Each of the ministers has done similar things such as getting an extra 150k€ salary from the coal industry etc.

Germany has a massive corruption problem on the higher levels.

It's not as visible for outsiders, because nations with corruption issues usually also have police and office workers essentially doing shakedowns to do their jobs, and that's not really a thing in Germany.

What is quiet widespread is politicians and office worker enriching themselves either directly from budgets theyre responsible for or by doing things for corporations which pay them handsomely.

thats likely why they're also including mentions in job postings in their metric

its not a silver bullet, but I do think its at least somewhat representative of popularity.

y4mi··on NASA Says Webb’s Excess Fuel Likely to Extend Its Lifetime Expectations
If you're interested in a more indepth view of how it's supposed to work, Real Engineering did a video about it recently.

No idea if what they're saying is true however, I've no knowledge about the domain.

y4mi··on I made my first web0 website today. It's so cool it just works
You really have no idea how DNS works then.

ICANN can do that for .com domains, because that's their TLD. They cannot do it for the TLDs they've already sold/aren't responsible for.

You can even purchase your own TLD from ICANN if you've got the money and create whatever domain names you want.

Maybe stop talking about stuff you've no clue about, otherwise you'll forever be a dunning kruger person

I'm not sure if you linked the correct video, because he's also saying that its going to be the children that will be in trouble.

I really don't see europe failing before 2050, and that was the time horizon i mentioned...

y4mi··on Apple said to be preparing for iPhones without SIM card slot in 2022
They can emulate the SIM card which gets provisioned on-the-fly with no user input according to the position of the device and whatever contract apple has for that area.

That's definitely going to be a step up in user comfort... The average apple user will definitely love it

I'm so glad I'm already in my thirties. I'll be dead by the time the shit will really start to hit the fan.

I'm pretty sure that people of the future will consider the time between 1950-2050 century to be the golden age of our current Civilization.

There are so many basically unsolvable issues on the horizon that I see absolutely no chance that our society will survive in it's current form.

My bet would be that we'll devolve into another form of aristocracy as soon as AI/automation make a human workforce mostly redundant.

Technological progress is likely going to stagnate entirely at that point, we all know how rich people generally behave without outside forces...

For a tech illeterare person maybe. using `docker-compose up` to start a preconfigured sonarr, radarr, transmission with VPN , Plex or jellyfin is almost all you need. the only addition is getting a VPN service such as mullvad... If that's too involved for a software developer I'd call that person pretty incompetent, honestly.
y4mi··on Microsoft forked MIT licensed repo and changed the copyright [fixed]
It does work with Firefox on my end...

Also hosting it yourself doesn't mean that you do everything yourself.

It would definitely spawn build plugins that do most of what you need if this practice actually establishes itself.

y4mi··on The Olkiluoto 3 EPR plant unit started up
It's rarely simple/honest misestimations with large government contracts though.

There is just too much money to be made for the corrupt people to stay away.

The honest and good offers are rarely taken, because they've realistic estimations - the dishonest one's only care about getting the contract, not finishing it... So they'll make the much better offer. And once work starts, the corruption keeps spreading. Everyone on every layer knows how unlikely their charges are going to be contested, so everyone just charges more for the same work, siphoning money from the project.

I'd consider that a cultural issue, because people at large have really started to only think about themselves and no longer identify with their work ethic. Which is understandable because the employers generally treat their employees like disposable tools.

I don't think there is any straightforward or easy solution, and it can get much much worse too. Just look at china's production issues for inland products, esp. food and consumable products.

y4mi··on Someone attached an AirTag to my car while I was in a bar
its quite easy to imagine in my opinion.

she drives home and gets these notifications, which clearly spook her, which is why she made extra turns etc.

she sends a few messages to friends and/or family, because she's freaking out about it, but goes to sleep because she doesn't know what to do

one of these friends or family comes by in the morning, sees her car and checks it out before ringing her door bell

the given facts are quite believeable, though i doubt there is a human trafficing relation which she seems to think. its more likely a potential stalker, upset boyfriend or similar.

Noise cancellation really is one of the most hit-and-miss technologies in my experience.

I've got a sony wh-1000xm2, some inear Jabra and the Bose 700, which came with my Pixel 6 purchase the other day.

It really is something the potential buyer should check out themselves in a store before buying, because they're really variable in quality.

According to mkbhd the Sony one's are the best at it, but they have very strong white noise background at least with my older model.

I actually had the same issue with that pressure on my ears, though it slowly went away and haven't noticed any displeasure in a long time now.

y4mi··on The Web3 Fraud
> Not really; it is the server that tells all clients what the state is.

Not with realtime action games, nope. The server hopefully verifies, but not even that is a given... Just look at New Worlds immortality bug from a few weeks back for a pretty large budget game that forgot to do that to a sufficient degree.

y4mi··on JFK Assassination Records – 2021 Additional Documents Release
> Edit: I don't mean to be too snarky, I encourage anyone to do their own research

And yet you encourage people to dive into misinformation in order to somehow magically figure out what of the provided information are outright lies or just misinformed ideas.

If you equate "Doing your research" to reading articles, opinions or even quoted declassified files then you're another victim of our current misinformation crisis.

And I honestly doubt that anyone but the most dedicated historians still actually study this assassination while crosschecking everything, reading everything indepth to make an attempt too actually figure out the context it had back then etc.

It is a lot of work to actually gain knowledge on something, however we've somehow started to consider reading documents which have at best entertainment value as doing research...

y4mi··on This website has 81% battery power remaining
I don't think we've went through a circle of more then doubling the power consumption before, but I've only been paying attention to it since shortly before 2010, as I was using prebuilt systems before that.

Maybe you're right and more then doubling the power consumption is a normal thing that just occasionally happens.

y4mi··on This website has 81% battery power remaining
Check out the upcoming ATX power consumption and compare it to what we're using currently...

What you said was true for a very long time, but Moore's law has slowed down a lot over the last 5yrs and power consumption has increased significantly, and is about to become unreasonable in my opinion.

Maximum power draw of 2.4 kw for about to 10% of the uptime is ... sadly going to be reality soon.

y4mi··on Ask HN: Why have we accepted the cookie pop-up situation across the web?
Well, it's basically malicious compliance. They're supposed to be super annoying because the people which need them do things which have been deemed unacceptable from the legislature. Instead of complying, they choose this obnoxious practice so they could continue with what they've been doing for years, which is monitoring every action a visitor does.

You don't need a cookie banner to be allowed to create Cookies. You only need them if you're using them for something like tracking.

A session cookie, selected theme etc is all fine without that banner

> Anecdotally, I’ve never fucked anything up royally.

You're not necessarily wrong, but that's definitely a survivalship bias. You only need to lose once for a game over, so everyone still playing underestimates the stakes at play, as there is close to no interaction to people that have lost.

y4mi··on AWS down again?
How do the attackers ddos an inhouse deployment that cannot be accessed from the internet without joining a VPN?

They can try to saturate the VPN host maybe, but that's going to be challenging considering that it's going to be limited to connection requests without valid credentials.

and these are likely set to be ignored on multiple failed attempts through fail2ban or similar tooling

y4mi··on AWS down again?
> Even if you can manage more uptime on your own than through the cloud (which I doubt)

Getting higher uptime is super easy for smallish inhouse deployments.

You just don't install any updates and let the server run, trusting your VPN to shield you from possible security issues.

The maintenance burden is the reason why people often prefer the cloud services, not the uptime. Because maintaining the instance with updates, reading all patch notes and steps for migration, keep every health metric monitored and respond quickly on issues without getting stuck googling for possible reasons is quite a bit of work and quickly forces you to employ n+1 people.

y4mi··on Tesla Update Allows Video Games While Driving, and the Feds Aren’t Happy
and you think 60 miles without disenganging on a freeway means anything?

to quote wikipedias statistic from 2012:

  - the United States had 3.38 road fatalities per 1 billion vehicle-km on its Interstate-type highways, often called freeways.[28]
congrats on your 60 miles i guess... only 295 857 928 more miles until your car performs as well as an average human from 2012.

> Just out of curiosity, what are notable examples of people saying “we should judge people by the standards of their time” in a reasonable way?

Do you consider eating meat at a restaurant to be a morally acceptable thing to do?

The meat you consume there is likely factory grown, which means that the animal lived in total misery until it was brutally murdered under extreme duress.

It's highly likely that people will consider treating animals like that to be immoral at some point. If you don't accept your quote as truth you'll also have to accept that your descends will consider you (and everyone else in our society) monstrous.

y4mi··on Don't Make My Mistakes: Common Infrastructure Errors I've Made
> On the other hand "allow people to use any feature on AWS they ask for" is a wrong reasoning. When you allow for this you get a ton of dependencies that are not requiered and in turn make your system hard to maintain and sometimes extremely cosly.

I agree with the spirit of what you wrote, but I think that not allowing it is ultimately even worse then the unnecessary dependencies.

Limiting your dependencies should be a choice the developers themselves are meant to make, otherwise you risk estrangement and having unmotivated workers that don't feel responsible for their own work. That ends up costing more in the long run I think.
