xyzal··on GitHub confirms breach of 3,800 repos via malicious VSCode extension
Sigh. I guess there isn't any "min-release-age" for extensions ...
xyzal··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
I think discussion with open registration is doomed precisely for this reason, it is too open to being influenced by bad actors. Maybe the lobste.rs invitation model would be better ...
xyzal··on I believe there are entire companies right now under AI psychosis
I work at software in a medical setting. We are piloting an integration with a startup for measuring [some bodily variable relevant in ICU setting]. They are obviously vibecoding (docs are telling) and their API is failing in unexpected ways that they are not able to resolve. I am just waiting when this are going to harm somebody.
xyzal··on Amazon workers under pressure to up their AI usage are making up tasks
Love it. This needs to become a new trend, and price per token can't rise soon enough.
xyzal··on Show HN: GlycemicGPT – Open-source AI-powered diabetes management
This is THE ONE domain where you would want to use classical machine learning and not unreliable LLMs. Unless you want to kill yourself, that is.
xyzal··on Restore full BambuNetwork support for Bambu Lab printers
You are on a venture capital run forum. A lot of people here would approve of this business model, as long as it brings in monies ...

Not even deterministic autocomplete.
xyzal··on Local AI needs to be the norm
It is. You can't tinker with someone else's machine.
xyzal··on Hardware Attestation as Monopoly Enabler
This is exactly why is legislation like the Digital Markets Act needed.
xyzal··on Maryland to ban A.I.-driven price increases in grocery stores
Regarding US healthcare costs, I cannot understand why people are not in the streets with pitchforks. Most of Europe has this problem solved.

What is the root cause w.r.t. the current situation? Are there any obvious ways out? Do any US politicians have any plans for a change? Are there any discussed proposals how to reform?

xyzal··on The Zig project's rationale for their anti-AI contribution policy
Probably in cognitive surrender. I have one such colleague and he is driving me crazy. "Claude sad that ..."
xyzal··on Spam in conversational replies to blog posts
I think there should be venues to speak anonymously, just not places where large-scale political discussion takes place.
xyzal··on Spam in conversational replies to blog posts
It did solve the spam/russian bot problem on https://www.lide.cz/ . You have to verify yourself using a national ID and you discuss under your citizen name. The conversation is since somehow way more thoughtful and civic than say on FB.

Not that I am happy with it, it would be ideal to have my old internet back.

xyzal··on Spam in conversational replies to blog posts
Text generation is now cheap, so I expect this problem to worsen. I hate to write it, but I don't see any other solution on platforms, that aspire to be a modern agora, than identity verification ...
xyzal··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
Enjoy setting up a GoFundMe if you ever get cancer.
xyzal··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
Only in America, where markets magically solve all issues.
xyzal··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
This enforcement costs argument is wrong. The point is not to enforce such a ban, it's to signal where the collective consensus is.
xyzal··on X Randomly Banning Users for "Inauthentic Behavior"
I use my account only to mock @realDonaldTrump.

Real discussions with friends happen in group chats, without all the crap and noise.

xyzal··on The AI Layoff Trap
That is why we need functioning states -- free markets won't save you in such a case. Though I found it is hard to explain especially to U.S. people, who put "regulation" on par with f words :)
xyzal··on The AI Layoff Trap
Heh, that would be surely funny :) But most people at least know there is a new permit law and if they are not sure, they are to seek expert guidance. The model is even with explicit notification unable to reflect upon this fact. How it is supposed to be useful then?
xyzal··on The AI Layoff Trap
When the mandatory speed limit in my country was reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h in cities, 95 percent of people instantly adapted.
xyzal··on The AI Layoff Trap
I use AIs for coding with moderate success, but the more I work with them, the more I am convinced that "intelligence on tap" is a pipe dream, especially in domains where logical thinking in novel (ie not-in-dataset) contexts is required.

Recently, I tasked it to study a new Czech building permit law in conjunction with some waste disposal regulations and the result was just tragic. The model (opus 4.6) just could not stop drawing conclusions from obsolete regulations in its training dataset, even when given the fulltext of the new law. The usual "you are totally right" also applied and its conclusions were most of the time obviously wrong even to a human with cursory knowledge of the subject.

I ended with studying the relevant regulations myself over the weekend.

xyzal··on The Raft consensus algorithm explained through "Mean Girls" (2019)
As a lover or Raft Consensus Algorithm, now I have to watch Mean Girls I guess.
