I had the same thought when I heard of the settlement. There are millions of people with loved ones who have died of OxyContin overdose, and rarely do you have a case like this where a good deal of such visceral suffering was planned and profited off of by such a small and identifiable group
A less charitable take, and something that came to mind for me faster than what others are presenting (that commits fixing bugs that you caused tend to be larger because you know more about the architecture around the code needing to be fixed), is that including other code changes in your bug fix commit serves as a way of covering your ass. If the reviewer needs to sift through and understand 100 lines of whatever (maybe germane to the fix, maybe not), the few lines that address the issue you caused won’t get as much focus, and therefore the issue (that you caused!) itself won’t stand out in your teammates’ minds.
Yeah, and on the demand side, I have a hunch that a company that implicitly or explicitly uses their lack of a vaccine requirement as a recruiting pitch would have a hard time recruiting a large subset of engineers.
What makes Philadelphia “horrible” in your eyes? As somehow who has lived in what I think were nice but not luxurious parts of both urban cores, I found Philly every bit as livable and probably more pleasant and friendly, but I’m in New York now for social and work reasons
This might have been covered in some part I skimmed over, but they never seemed to offer a mechanism for contaminated water in a drainage basin entering the local food supply via processed foods in a way that wouldn’t also impact a plant-based (e.g. potato-only) diet. Did anyone get any insight there or is that really a gap in their explanation?
As an aside, I have an unfortunate and deep association between Microsoft Word-typesetting and graphs with papers I wrote in high school that put me in a skeptical stance from the start
JFK is also a preferable location for staging supersonic flight because you don’t need to pass over/near a massive population center on a route to northern Europe
I’m not sure why we should be inclined to trust the police in an environment where the government is clearly making an effort to play down the seriousness of the crisis and their hand in it. It’s also a bit hard to believe that someone would both be trolling hard enough to lie about their grandfather needing oxygen during an oxygen shortage AND give enough information for the authorities to show up and realize he was trolling.
Can you say more about what you think the implications of offering the control group vaccinations are? My prior assumption would be that protecting the control group would cause the study to underestimate the effectiveness of the vaccine since it now looks comparatively more similar to the control.
They say this, but your credits aren’t actually thrown away immediately (at least they weren’t in 2018 or thereabouts). I learned this by ending up in exactly the position you describe - trying to get rid of credits before canceling - except I gave up with one or two left. To my surprise, they were still there once I was done canceling.
That strikes me as a bit of a ridiculous reason to move. The homeless in California are concentrated in a handful of cities, and within those cities, in a handful of neighborhoods. It’s not a problem that you’d be exposed to in a way that truly inconveniences you unless you live or work in very specific locales, and even then, what are the homeless doing that is pushing people to move all the way out of the state rather than just one neighborhood over?
The notion that the homeless population is going to increase tenfold in the near-term also deserves a citation, that’s an immense jump.
At least in the US, I think it varies massively depending on the culture of a given city and school (the way the parents in the district make their living definitely impacts the values of the kids), and maybe less so generationally.
How long have you been using it? I find random ESP32s off of Amazon to be a bit of a crapshoot, and I’ve taken to just sticking to big microcontroller integrators that I’ve used before.
I think that’s all still addressed by him saying (paraphrased here) “learning C doesn’t teach you your system; it teaches you the C virtual machine.” You could just as easily teach the usefulness of lexical scoping and memory layout by teaching people a simplified version of a modern JavaScript engine and teaching them to inspect the accompanying intermediate representation. Bootcamps don’t dive into these things and give attendees intuitions for some model of computing because they know what people are paying for (learning the level of JS necessary to land a job as quickly as possible).
I feel like if this were true (searching doesn’t strengthen the original memory), it would lead to a dramatic difference in a cohort’s ability to remember trivial information that they learned a long time ago, but it also seems really hard to perform a trial for something like this.
I would love to see a plane try to decelerate from 200+ mph with the surface quality changing every 200 yards and with 18-inch-deep potholes every so often. I wonder what sort of maintenance budget the original interstate plan envisioned
As someone who has generally tried to take your current approach and has generally been rewarded for it, yours is a refreshing perspective. There's a persistent voice in the back of my head that questions whether I'm acting out of fear, rationality, or just following a happy stasis. It's always reassuring to see the other side of this.
Click is just an easier way to get to the point of Nietzsche’s “eternal recurrence of the same” thought experiment. If (in the absence of things like destitution) you’ve chosen to live your life in such a way that you wanted to skip through significant parts of it, is it really a life well-lived?
It makes total sense in hindsight that the original aim of the hackers was not some low-netting Bitcoin scam, but it still feels unsatisfying that all they were after with such elevated access was the sale of high profile usernames.
D.E. Shaw is not a high frequency shop. I would be very surprised if their daily transactions was more than 5% or so of their total book.
More broadly, quant shops are not out to place bets on what they think will happen in the next few seconds. They're much more like traditional hedge funds than HFT firms in terms of their betting horizons. It's just that the trades they choose to make on those horizons are generated algorithmically.
Last time I worked on TPUs, a lot of very pervasive LA operations (e.g. Cholesky decomposition) were unoptimized and slow compared to the NN-style operations. I’m sure that can be fixed, but for the time being, it seems inappropriate for anything beyond the obvious NN operations.
