For now, we dont know any other way to explain than to say it expands, except maybe imaginative fantasies from amateurs on Hackernews, but does it count ?
There s nothing wrong about them, they work hard and are not rent seekers (a commission on successful deal is the exact opposite of a rent).
Every countries has them (Im French, live in Hong Kong) and what you bemoaned is mundane in my experience.
But since we have a beginning, and a flow of time, we probably also have a birth, a mother, and maybe even a purpose... but that's a very human way to think, might all just be random soup.
But imagine there's a self-aware agent in a simulation we create, he starts thinking the same thoughts, everyone mock him "we're all just random, there is no God, no design, how could so much energy be spent on such a useless giant block of empty space for any reason", he would have to sort of agree, but he would be sort of wrong. And discovering us, would bring him no solace: we can't tell him of our own designers ourselves. Discovering them, would bring us no solace either, for the same reason. That's why the concept of God is stupid: God has a God too, so what do we do now, solved no problem to accept His existence.
But there's something strange with English knowledge: it's never quite deep. I find French materials are always a bit deeper, a bit more complex, we don't try to explain to 5 yo all the time, we don't always insist so much on the high level introductory stuff - we have a way to explain extremely complex concepts to more people I find. Just a feeling: when I want to explore I use English but when I want to dig I find more interesting stuff in French.
It's very frustrating because I live abroad now, in Hong Kong, and only use English with my friends, partners etc. And sometimes I want to explain to them, give them something to read, but it's only in French because no English speaker ever tried to think to dig deeper, to give more perspective, to ask the right questions etc :D
The ridiculous writing system is indeed my problem with it - and the ridiculous variations in tones too but they swear it's easy if you're born in it... which is ofc the problem: a lingua franca works if adult merchants can learn it.
I feel it's hard for me to make spelling mistakes in English, which is not my native tongue, but VERY EASY to make them in French, that I studied and used for decades: there is an inherent beauty to English, in its simplicity, we should not dismiss. (yes I'm re-reading three times to make sure I didn't spell anything wrong lol)
But ofc at the time it was very different, Europeans didn't exist per se, each country saw itself as completely different from the others.
What I meant is accusing the US to cause a problem in Europe is a tautology: we made the US in a way, so if the US come back to cause issues, well, it's ALSO our own fault. Every problem in Europe is "self" (that "self" changed with time) inflicted, it's not the Asians or the Africans causing conflicts, there is no external factor to blame, we MUST fix them our"selves".
Ironically, lots of problems in Africa or Asia were also inflicted by Europeans, they can claim an external factor, them. We really messed up a lot of the world, for reasons that are now beyond comprehension since we're raised by the people who stopped it, and it's a sin I have trouble to carry sometimes. Gladly, most alive today seem to have forgotten, forgiven or benefitted from it, doesn't make me forget those not alive today :(
- nouns have no gender !!!!
- conjugation is extremely simple (only one variation for 3rd person singular for most verbs!!)
- tenses are limited !
- vocabulary is 40% French-Latin and 60% Germanic, most of Europe and America can use the subset they prefer
- the writing is latin, simple to learn, complete enough to describe well the sounds
- the native community is immense, with a large interesting cultural body of work, making it interesting to learn
- it's easy to start communicating but it can be extremely rich in higher levels of language: you start talking quickly and then can move to beautiful structures later: there is a quick reward and a long term reward
There is nothing unfortunate it became default, there is simply no better lingua franca today. We could try Japanese or Chinese, Hindi or Spanish, but they all have way more quirks and way less qualities !
I strongly reject people saying that English became default by historical chance, it could have stayed French, moved to German or Spanish, it SHOULD be Chinese, but all of them are too hard for adults to learn as quickly as English and never as rewarding. Just think of the time it takes to learn an ideogram-based writing system, all that to end up able to read only communist propaganda or very old poetry for instance...
It's ALL self-inflicted. But there was no sense of self at the time, what's new today is that Europe is starting, slowly and shakily, to see itself as a whole. At least I cannot imagine today ever wanting to murder a German more than a French. Ever.
Ofc the most annoying is her addiction to toys marketed there, but when I was a kid it was the same with tv, you just need one colorful commercial to be a poisonnous little shit for months until "okay fine yes" is uttered at xmas or someth.
Color me surprised. Maybe we should ask Mira Murati to step aside from her inspiring essays about the future of poetry and help us figure out why the world spent trillions on nvidia equity and how to unwind this pending disaster...
But it's liberating to be angry at bullshit (and God knows China is the bullshit Mecca), and AI is the top bullshit these days. We're not anti innovation because we say chatgpt is not gonna maintain our trading systems or whatever you work on. It's a funny silly statistical text generator that uses hundreds of thousands of video cards to output dead http links.
We're far from anything intelligent but it's at least indeed very artificial.
