higher IQ people <-- well you have to prove that first, so let me ask you a test question to prove them: how can you mix collaboration and competition in society to produce the optimal productivity/conflict ratio ?

The censorship here in China is only about public discussions / spaces. You cannot like have a website telling you about the crimes of the party. But downloading some compressed matrix re-spouting the said crimes, nobody gives a damn.

We seem to censor organized large scale complaints and viral mind virii, but we never quite forbid people at home to read some generated knowledge from an obscure hard to use software.

welcome to 3DTV hype, LLM are useless...
xwolfi··on Job-seekers are dodging AI interviewers
An interface is a layer of translation between two things.

In Object oriented programming, it's a contract between two encapsulated modules: you define how one should be used, without exposing internals, and the other will have only this contract to manipulate the module.

Otherwise, for a graphical interface, it's a translation between what the machine can do and what the human can see.

America went from a land populated by people so weak they were decimated by foreign soldiers on horses, to the strongest army in the world. It evolved, positively ?

And in one thought, I found that LLM can't yet pass that imaginary experiment, yes. So I would argue what we already know: LLM are not thinking lol. I can distinguish them, they're not gonna trick me, or play with me.
xwolfi··on Typed languages are better suited for vibecoding
That seems a little bit dangerous, why not do it in a language you know ? Plus, this is not launching rockets on the moon, it's a sentence splitter with a fancy state machine (probably very useful in your niche, not a critique) - the difficulty was for you to put the effort to build a complicated state machine, the rest was frankly... not very LLM-needing and now you can't maintain your own stuff without Nvidia burning uranium.

Did the LLM help at all in designing the core, the state machine itself ?

xwolfi··on Typed languages are better suited for vibecoding
We have infinite uranium anyway !

"Are you an LLM?" poof, fails the Turing test.

Even if they lie, you could ask them 20 times and they d reply the lie, without feeling annoyed: FAIL.

LLMs cannot pass the Turing test, it's easy to see they're not human. They always enjoy questions ! And they never ask any !

Zoom out: 200 years ago they were killing each other over slavery, 400 years ago, there was no american society.

The trend is up, but they're in a local minimum :D

xwolfi··on Figma will IPO on July 31
Imagine in that future world you describe, how immensely valuable a human artist will be: originality, wit, brilliance, their design will completely conquer any competitor generating the slop you dream of.
xwolfi··on Vibe code is legacy code
Yeah, we all own all code, if we can't understand the code we own, we study it. If we need to change it, we change it.

"Legacy" for me is a bad word. I refuse to use it, and I scold my colleagues when they do: it's our code, we modernize it if we don't like it, and if we stop using it, then it's finished code. What is this false dichotomy between legacy code and "not in prod yet code" ?

In companies we call our regulatory prosecutions for fraudulent behavior that are so complex that they last for 10 years "legacy matters". Do you think that points at a statement of factual representation, or at a ridiculous attempt at distancing ourselves from our actual responsibilities ?

xwolfi··on Distillation makes AI models smaller and cheaper
Well yeah you have to look at the entire training duration for your brain. It did take a while to be as perfect as you seem to be, several billion years, and I'm sure you make mistakes sometimes and hallucinate stupid ideas.

And don't run too long on a couple bananas, the brain is not just there to infer, it also needs to manage its autonomous transport system which requires much more energy itself.

xwolfi··on UK backing down on Apple encryption backdoor after pressure from US
What are you saying, I'm in China it's completely false. There is very lax enforcement, and if there is enforcement, there's always an opportunity to bribe.

The communist party doesn't have "access" to a billion phones: what would they even do with all that garbage. They can ask Wechat what you send your friends, sure, and that's enough to police most crimes.

We don't have the budget or organizational acumen of the NSA.

I like that one
xwolfi··on AI could have written this: Birth of a classist slur in knowledge work [pdf]
It is normal, you add a layer between the two brains that communicate, and that layer only add statistical experience to the message.

I write letters to my gf, in English, while English is not our first language. I would never ever put an LLM between us: this would fall flat, remove who we are, be a mess of cultural references, it would just not be interesting to read, even if maybe we could make it sound more native, in the style of Barack Obama or Prince Charles...

LLMs are going to make people as dumb as GPS made them. Except really, when reading a map was not very useful a skill, writing what you feel... should be.

xwolfi··on What will become of the CIA?
You know reality is independent from your morals right ?
xwolfi··on If writing is thinking then what happens if AI is doing the writing and reading?
I'm in a new budding relationship and we're exchanging letters. There is no way in Earth I touch chatgpt, but if I write well, how believable is it ? Is she ?

I hate this thing, it's so soul-less.

xwolfi··on Digital vassals? French Government ‘exposes citizens’ data to US'
Because when they break things they lose hours of work they cannot afford to lose. My parents had a small business and if my mom mis-clicked somewhere and deleted some important thing, she would enter a panicked rage as she'd lose half the day with some remote tech support.

She would never touch a computer after work, because it just stressed her, she found them absolutely unbearable, also because the tech support was unbearably obnoxious.

xwolfi··on Digital vassals? French Government ‘exposes citizens’ data to US'
But everyone experienced in such a "migration" would challenge your flawed impression that there would be cost saving. SAS is in fact used in many serious companies (I know it's used at the fraud department of Bouygues Telecom, for instance) so you're not gonna dead-end yourself all that much, you can do the python+r stuff on your own probably, as long as the reports are there, and call them from SAS if you cannot stand it.

Meanwhile, nothing has to move, nothing has to change, and your non-critical division will continue to cost exactly as budgeted instead of going through unknown waters just because maybe switching to something new might be ... cheap eventually ?

Plus this has nothing to do with Microsoft really, as most cost is in Windows and its integration. It's hard to replace the global policies of Windows by an alternative.

Not "only" come on, I'm a little bit younger and I know it too ahah You even linked a youtube video, which I assume is the sketch in question (at work, no youtube): we can look at things from the past and learn them too !
xwolfi··on Show HN: Refine – A Local Alternative to Grammarly
They're not very smart then: most non-native people know there are several big mainstream ways to spell English, and we learn that on top of our own languages.

Couldn't American schools teach English the same way, like, that there are no single proper way ?

xwolfi··on Show HN: Refine – A Local Alternative to Grammarly
I learned that both exist in school in France. It doesn't matter, I write both interchangeably and nobody ever cared nor corrected me.
xwolfi··on Show HN: Refine – A Local Alternative to Grammarly
Quelle que soit la facon dont ils ecrivent, ce sera toujours une faute d'orthographe, puisque la seule vraie facon d'ecrire serait couleur. L'anglais, americain ou britannique, n'est qu'une geante faute d'orthographe du francais.
xwolfi··on Show HN: Refine – A Local Alternative to Grammarly
We learn both, tbh... And then get confused all our life, it's not like we choose one style in school, school teaches us that English actually has two dominant spellings and here is the American, here is the British and deal with it.

Non-native English speakers don't learn English exactly the same way as natives learning from their parents.

xwolfi··on Show HN: Refine – A Local Alternative to Grammarly
This feels wrong, I work in China in a European multinational with low number of Americans, yet we all spell in a mixture with no expectation of consistency: half the sentence can be in British, the rest in American and it will be an Australian reading the email and they will feel absolutely nothing: multi national corporations full of non-native speakers are completely used to the confusion. I'm French myself, I write color as often as I write colour, and practice and practise are completely identical to me.
