xueyongg··on 5 things I've learnt from Kobe Bryant
This post was posted back in January but I chanced upon a video of him reaching out to a fan and spent the day with him. Was never really a kobe fan, but definitely learnt so much from him as an individual that places people before himself. Rest in peace, you're gone too soon! Hope you enjoy! In this time of chaos, I find comfort in knowing that goodness exists.
xueyongg··on What Michael Jordan teaches me as a software engineer
learning every day even from your basketball idol
xueyongg··on The things I've learnt from Michael Jordan as a software engineer
It has always been a dream to be able to merge the two domains I love and learn something out of it. Wish to share with all of you! (:
xueyongg··on Website Will Selfdestruct
Fellow vue! Which css framework did you use to create that animated look tough? Its really amazing
xueyongg··on Website Will Selfdestruct
Super cool! are you able to share what are the tools you used underneath?
xueyongg··on Celebration with 10000 Kubernetes Pods
I saw this interesting youtube video of a guy celebrating his milestone. Decided to share some of my learnings from my daily interaction with kubernetes as well. What are some of your learnings or pain points of using this tool?

xueyongg··on [dead]
Do you all have any good articles to read as well?
xueyongg··on Show HN: Writing for Software Developers
I'm definitely supporting you on this idea! I've learnt so much through "Learn as you teach" methodology. Do share your site once you have started it (:

Oh and personally, as a way to learn my frontend development skill, I also created my blog from scratch through a frontend framework! You can consider that as well

xueyongg··on Markdown Blog
That was exactly what I was considering at the start of the year. Every post is just a markdown file, easy to maintain, configure, and upload. If this is what you are intending to go for, do it! Supporting you from wherever I am. Here's my site for reference, hope it gives you an idea to go about this! (:

xueyongg··on Show HN: Writing for Software Developers
Keep writing!! I've personally started my journey into content creation as a software engineer just this year! To be more focused, I found a growing passion for Design Patterns and started writing my learning about them. Hope to share the same passion with you! Keep going pal! Would love to hear some tips from you! Here's my site, and hope it encourages you all!

xueyongg··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
Write write write! Agree with the mass! Writing provides the alignment needed for a team to move together in a project! I personally have started writing as a software engineer to allow myself to develop my writing skills to articulate my ideas and thoughts coherently. Just wanted to share my post on that as well. Hope it encourages my readers!!

xueyongg··on Comfortable with Uncomfortable
Personally, the common uncomfortable experience I encounter is related to unfamiliar domains I have to deal with. As a client-facing software engineer, numerous times I was quite nervous when I have to talk to clients. The fear of not being able to speak clearly, or explain a technical concept well to a stakeholder can seem rather embarrassing. One of the ways to deal with that was to delve in deep into those new domains and train me to be equipped with those communication skills. One such domain for me will be sales. Here's my blog post that I've learnt about sales in my attempt to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Hope you readers find it useful! (:

xueyongg··on Ask HN: How do I create that mental reset effect Monday has on me?
I guess you have to find out what excites you! Does meaningfulness from work drive that sense of excitement? Perhaps it could be your own personal project that excites you. Personally, I enjoy what I learn from working as a software engineer and writing them down coherently as blog posts. This help to cement my understanding and also give me the ability to share with others. One example is my article regarding design patterns that I was learning just a week ago! Hope to share with you all (:

Or perhaps you could start an active lifestyle again. Working out always helps to curb motivation issues at times. Give that a try!

xueyongg··on Ask HN: What do you struggle the most with when deploying personal projects?
Personally for me, I always second guess the architecture/approach of my personal projects. That's usually my biggest struggle! hahaha, weird as it may sound. Not the easiest 'internal' issue to overcome, because I don't know what I don't know. So I figured that just going deep into a particular domain will be helpful.

When it comes to deployment, I personally have quite a deep experience working with Kubernetes and docker at work. Not the easiest to learn, but definitely rewarding when you can get it right, I'm sure you have similar experiences as well! Would love to hear from you what are your personal projects as well (:

Here's just my attempt to learn and address my 'don't know what I don't know' issue: https://blog.phuaxueyong.com/post/2020-05-03-3-more-cloud-de...

xueyongg··on Ask HN: Do you maintain a log of what you learn? How often do you go over them?
I simply just write them down as a form of blogging content. I personally think if you are on a personal journey to learn, everything you learn coupled with your own perspective could potentially be the eureka moment for another. Keep a journal!

Here's my 'journal' to share my learning as a Software Engineer as well. Hope you enjoy it!

xueyongg··on My blog is now generated by Google Docs
Omg, it is quite a good idea! Was wondering if that follows the same idea as using markdown as your post, and each post is actually just a markdown file? Here's my blog and each post is basically just a markdown file! Just wanted to share with all of you.

xueyongg··on How do you monetise your own site?
Do you all have any idea to monetise your own site? I've heard of affiliate marketing but I don't want to sell whatever i do not believe in, or do not really use. Do let me know what are your thoughts?

I also wonder if you all know how I can go about monetising my blog in particular as well? I mainly posts about technology and learnings.

xueyongg··on What Goodreads is for books and ProductHunt for products, Blogmark is for blogs
I too have started my own blog site this year to share some of the learnings I've encountered in my job as a Software Engineer. May I also add this into the mix?

xueyongg··on Ask HN: How do you learn of new posts in favourite blogs?
You can consider subscribing to hacker news telegram bot(@hnrobot). I've been following them for a year now. Coupled with the feature to notify you if a particular post's points are above a pre-determined threshold of points, you can now get notified of posts that have been treading. Over the past months, I've also been starting to write and curate some of these posts that I think are meaningful. Hope you all will find them useful for learning! Cheers. (:

xueyongg··on Where do you store your passwords?
LastPass has been serving me well. I understand their data was breached before. yet I always wonder, what happens if a security-centric firm gets hacked? Where else can we truly trust other than our own pen & paper at home? Hehe, just my two cents worth. What are your thoughts? I know of alternatives: 1password
xueyongg··on A new and simple blogging platform
I wonder if you have considered developing your own blog page. That is definitely one fun way to go about this.

I've decided to give that a try and I really enjoyed my site more so than the commercial ones out there. Hope you find these posts helpful to give you an idea of considering customized blog sites (:

An individual post will be as seen below: https://blog.phuaxueyong.com/post/2020-05-03-3-more-cloud-de...

xueyongg··on Remembering What You Read
One way I usually go about that is to write. The best way to remember what you learn is to teach them. When you teach, you are 'forced' to articulate your knowledge in a coherent manner. In return, that allows this knowledge to sink in. I personally have started this approach by writing some of these things I've learnt over the past months. Interestingly, such an approach allows you to understand knowledge across different domains as well. In this case, I'm a software engineer but was interested to understand more about sales. Hope to share with you! Hope you will find these posts useful to drive this point home! Cheers (:

xueyongg··on Ask HN: Best source for learning Web development?
I personally found the courses from Pluralsight to be really useful. The instructors are really thorough with their explanations. I managed to learn design patterns with Javascript as well. I think these are underrated knowledge of coding that will set you up for success when you are able to master them. I managed to write a simple post about 3 key types of design patterns for javascript code. Hope you find it useful to kick start your learning journey! Cheers for your friendly engineer (:

xueyongg··on Effective Learning Strategies for Programmers
I was thinking about this some months ago and I came across the idea of source code reading. It helps to provide new insights in ways we can express ourselves (our logic in this case) in code. Learning how other world-class programmers expressing themselves is definitely a way to understand what makes them top tier programmers. I've written a post about source code writing to expound on this approach. Hope you all will find it useful! Cheers (:

xueyongg··on Ask HN: What are the other websites you visit daily?
I just subscribe to the hacker news telegram robot (@hnrobot). All the updated posts and articles are just posted there on one page. Really convenient.

I also collated some of these sites that I think are really useful and segregated them based on their domains. Hope it is of great use for you readers! (:

xueyongg··on Evergreen Skills and Knowledge – What’s Worth Learning?
I just happened to think about that since the start of this year. I would consider evergreen skills that are not industry-specific and are always relevant wherever we go. Two things immediately came to me for me: Sales & Content Creation. You always need to sell, it could be services and product, or it could just be selling an idea. I wrote an article about sales and how to do insight selling. Hope that it would be helpful for you (:

xueyongg··on Ask HN: Best learning resources on architecting modern web app systems
There is one more article on design patterns I thought are interesting for general learning. A personal challenge for my fellow techies, try applying such design pattern thinking into your life as well, you will discover many interesting insights along the way! Cheers!

https://blog.phuaxueyong.com/post/2020-05-03-3-more-cloud-de...

xueyongg··on Ask HN: What's your personal website's tech stack?
I'm using NUXT.js. Interestingly, I tried NEXT.js before and I do prefer the formal framework. It has been really easy to create your own personal blog since you can build a static site out of the framework. Super elegant! Definitely mobile friendly but that will depend on the CSS styling, which there are many templates out there.

Since I can create static sites from NUXT.js, I practically just need a static file server like Nginx to serve my files, and my server costs like 20bucks/year? Can't find anything cheaper than that.

Here's my site, I also write a few learnings and findings from my journey as a Software Engineer. Hope you find something useful from here! Cheers (:

xueyongg··on Ask HN: Best learning resources on architecting modern web app systems
Just the topic you are looking for. I was looking through some resources on design patterns because it started to dawn on me just how paramount a good design pattern is for the success of an application. Hope you find them useful!

One is related to an application layer's design pattern. Another is related to architectural design pattern.
