xradionut··on Math is not necessary for software development
Cartesian product is a very common, well known database development term.

So what are these apps so I can avoid them? Because if you don't understand basic SQL, I don't want to use your apps.

xradionut··on Texas Public Schools Are Teaching Creationism
It's a blatant falsehood.
xradionut··on Texas Public Schools Are Teaching Creationism
Maybe they don't have the pack mentality of schooled individuals. Maybe they are individual instead of demographic bins that you biased mind can't put them in...
xradionut··on Texas Public Schools Are Teaching Creationism
Here's a datum to counter your odorous opinion:

http://www.thecrimson.com/article/1989/3/16/homeschoolers-ar...

My nieces were/are homeschooled. Unlike their peers, they aren't ignorant, pregnant and don't have to run a gauntlet of savages in the public schools in their area. In addition to getting a much better education, they are better equipped to handle modern life. From financial wellness, to physical fitness, social integration to self dependence, they are score in the top decile.

xradionut··on Math is not necessary for software development
I am one of the contractors writing a custom accounting system that does the heavy lifting. I have a whole support department helping people like you and your clients. Mainly because of lack of logically thinking skills that math classes would fill.

It's not that people don't like math. People are inherently lazy and acquiring logical skills requires work.

xradionut··on Math is not necessary for software development
Wrong!

You still run into problems that require some math discipline and understanding. If you're writing CRUD apps, you need to know what a Cartesian product is or why big O matters. Or how to calculate disk space requirements and transaction times.

xradionut··on Math is not necessary for software development
The article writer is woefully ignorant. How can you be a career developer and not understand big O notation? Logic isn't just true or false, it's going deeper and learning k-maps and state machines in the bare basics of a programmers education. And it's math turtles all the way down...
xradionut··on America's Dwindling Economic Freedom
Norway, which is the "happiest" country is ranked number 32 on this list.
xradionut··on Eric Marshall 'Disturbed' by Dismantling of Namesake Science Library
The term "culling" is chilling when use by those in power. I've formerly only heard it used in context by some as a term for forced reduction of human population.
xradionut··on The Command Line Crash Course
You're being pedantic and obtuse. In your world people should get an Automotive Engineering degree before driving.

Zed teaches enough CLI to allow students to accomplish the basics so they can learn Python or C. Ideally they will expand on the material and also complete the bonus assignments in the material.

And man pages suck for absolute beginners. There's too much information overload and a beginner hasn't the context to know what is useful for his immediate needs.

xradionut··on Ford Exec: 'We Know Everyone Who Breaks the Law' Thanks To Our GPS In Your Car
"The Hyperion grinder lottery is almost upon us! Mandatory tickets will be sent to each household next month."
xradionut··on Building an Open Source Laptop
Quote from the original linked article: "Our Novena Project is of course still vulnerable to techniques such as silicon poisoning, but at least it pushes openness and disclosure down a layer, which is tangible progress in the right direction."

Many of the security flaws and known back doors are in the firmware, (see routers for example), which Bunny is resolving by making Open Source. It's probably impossible to eliminate all attack vectors, but by opening the processes up, you can eliminate most of the easier ones.

xradionut··on Dijkstra on Haskell and Java (2001)
Cheap crappy beer and junk food are popular too.
xradionut··on Dijkstra on Haskell and Java (2001)
I don't agree. There's many a programmer I know that can troubleshoot a tube radio, then go write some Lisp. Most are old school folks that grew up in the 8 bit days of solder and wirewrap.
xradionut··on I Got Fired Last Week. That’s a Good Thing. Here’s Why
"Was a few months away from my one year cliff."

Money. That's the reason. Had it happen to me a couple of times in the Web 1.0 days. Greed ruined some great products, a few companies and not a few friendships.

xradionut··on Searching the Internet for evidence of time travelers
I'm sorry the Rothschild's have the monopoly on time travel for the next few millennium.
xradionut··on Bzr is dying; Emacs needs to move
I hate when people say "git won the war", it sounds like an excuse to close minds and stop progress.

What if "Microsoft won the war"? Or vim? Or IBM? Or Java? Or Taco Bell?

xradionut··on Dogs are sensitive to small variations of the Earth's magnetic field
Maybe I can hire an augur to read my dogs poops then play the stock market with the findings?
xradionut··on Python 2.x vs 3.x use survey
Microsoft would prefer you to use PowerShell and Visual Studio. Python wasn't invented in Redmond.
xradionut··on About Python 3
You might be a great Microsoft developer.

Use this API, no this one, nope now this one, you almost caught up, so we released a newer, more better one! Please buy Awesome Studio and RDMS 2015 or you are a loser. Here's a free version that can't do shit, the Pro version is only $2000, plus lots of your time adjusting to a newer mono/flat chrome development environment. Hot keys only for touch screen users!

xradionut··on New Mac Pro teardown reveals replaceable Xeon CPU
It's more like a design statement. Workstations are for us plebes that use Linux.
xradionut··on The CDC 6600 Architecture
I was going to do the same type of project, but use a MIPS chip, however determined that ARM chips are much more available. Could also use FPGA, but that's a little too much abstraction.
xradionut··on Google offering free Chromebooks to Indian schools
I think a much better ethical investment would be XO laptops from OLPC, Internet-in-a-Box devices, and grants to train local teachers on how to use both.
xradionut··on User Culture Versus Programmer Culture
I think the author misses the point. Most users I interact with do not want to learn anything slightly challenging. They either want a magic button to do everything or they want you to do their job. God forbid they read any documentation, watch a quick video or even listen to a simple explanation. They don't need to learn how to program or use the command line, they need to give a shit and do their jobs, which might involve a little initiative and effort.
xradionut··on Amazon’s holiday success and UPS’ holiday fail
The article didn't mention the weather, which in DFW, totally fucked the transportation system for almost a week in December. The delivery depots in the area were backlogged and overwhelmed. I can imagine there may have been other locales with similar weather created circumstances.
xradionut··on Uruguay is the Economist's Country of the Year
If the Economist had any gravitas or courage, they should have chosen Iceland. :)
xradionut··on Edward Snowden, after months of NSA revelations, says his mission’s accomplished
Why should they arrest you when they can destroy you economically?
xradionut··on Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke
This level of activity is easy to detect if the institution wants to detect it and compile with the law. Chances are the business analyst(s) that did detect it were told to shut up.
xradionut··on Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke
You obviously do not have any domain knowledge about financial regulations nor the banking business at large. Accounting isn't rocket surgery, this level of activity is easy to spot, especially with software.(0) Plus requirements for tracking and reporting large cash deposits of this sort have been on the law books for years. (Not to mention the newer anti-terrorism requirements.)

(0) I've been working in the software side of the financial analysis for over a decade. While not trivial, transaction analysis is very common for various purposes including compliance.
