xor99··on Is the psychedelic therapy bubble about to burst?
Just decriminalise possession.
xor99··on How Bad Europe’s Energy Crisis Is
Because it's part of the economy! All sorts of non-intellectual goods make up the economy. We eat sausage, sausage comes from abroad, Germans can't make sausage because of Russian gas drop off, etc.
xor99··on How Bad Europe’s Energy Crisis Is
Isn't shitting on U.S. culture (e.g. "oh at least we don't do x!") while driving home with a Big Mac one of the most Euro things to do? I've seen various shades of this in the U.K., France, Italy etc. I'm not sure I would be getting out the small violins tbh as the friendly animosity is kind of funny. Western Europe is essentially NA-lite economically and politically anyway.
xor99··on 1 week of Stable Diffusion
Haha, yes it is the energy that sustained the internet after all
xor99··on 1 week of Stable Diffusion
This is the killer aspect of it. Running an image in a <5 mins on a Mac is amazing when you consider the alternatives atm.
xor99··on The Elite Overproduction Hypothesis
The implicit argument here is that humanities grads are somehow more likely to "rebel" because they are disaffected due to overproduction of similar deluded or "fake" elites. This is like a 90s deadbeats vs suits style bifurcation and there's no numbers provided to specifically prove "radicalisation" and "rebellion" only amongst humanities grads.

As a result, EOT seems to enter spotlight effect territory where influential socialists who have humanities backgrounds are seen as typical of ALL of that category. A similar logic would relate terrorism to ALL engineers because of something like the Salem hypothesis.

xor99··on Delivering Equitable Access to America’s Research
Someone should build a peer-to-peer rating and review server for the research outputs. Sci-hub was great in its time but there's a need for something better now.

Also, will the act cover historical gov funded research?

xor99··on Five Ways to Write Like The Economist [pdf] (2010)
The economist meets the standards for a well written publication. However, it has a kind of faux-objective style. Meaning it uses the presentation and style of an objective and scientific publication but has an overwhelming subtext: mindless non-committal liberalism that finds a way into reporting on every issue.
xor99··on Ask HN: How can I start a business to generate electricity?
Start with Youtube, in particular people who describe how to actually build various energy related technologies from wholesale materials. For example Robert Murray-Smith. I would stay away from tech analysis types who just overhype a particular "cool" technology.

Beyond that is extremely costly (capital, labour, time etc). You could look at solar farms or low profile wind energy installs though (e.g. look at improving the wind-type TENGs).

xor99··on MIT scientists discover neurons that light up whenever we see images of food
Mmm.. picture of burger
xor99··on Next wooden chair could arrive flat, then dry into a 3D shape
Yeah, it's just interesting research. We can make chairs pretty well at this stage too via lots of different methods. For example, steam bending is pretty common as a technique and isn't that revolutionary.
xor99··on The culture of rejection in computer science publications
haha oke I didn't think about this as a possibility.
xor99··on The culture of rejection in computer science publications
Anything like this is worth trying. Enhancing the reliability of peer-to-peer peer review on preprint servers so they become the de facto publishing base would be ideal. Think how many younger students could start publishing at undergrad and earlier.
xor99··on The culture of rejection in computer science publications
Yeah, why not. It's already like/comment/subscribe model via publishing online. This would add a dislike button and you could have it so it costs karma etc. Would be preferable imo.
xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
>maybe time to find another website to post your vaulted insights on then

P.S. how is this a vaulted idea or not relevant to "tech"? We are discussing a country that swims in its own pooh because the government (de-facto) controlled companies turned off or removed sensors at the beaches, misreported data, and couldn't buy chemicals at adequate levels because of Brexit. Seems like almost ALL of the issues described in the post are at the nexus of economics/politics and technology.

xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
>maybe time to find another website to post your vaulted insights on then

You will continue to intermittently post about politics and economics on here which judging by your comment history you do. I will also. Goodbye.

xor99··on AI and the Limits of Language
This article overly focusses on language derived synthesis. Obv because prompt engineering is a topic atm. H/w style transfer, image to video, etc is not necessarily derived from linguistic inputs if it's unlabelled. We could also hook up a brain to GPU network. Then having direct brain neural synthesis "beyond" language.

I agree with the author that the linguistic focus of 20th century philosophy was shown to be fallacious though. Just look at the later Wittgenstein versus the Tractatus. Early Wittgenstein and its many pitfalls should be required reading @ Google (or maybe it is and the engineer in question "rebelled"). Language megalomania is not a good point of evidence for proving the existence of sentient machines.

xor99··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
Open source and replicable studies means going back to the fundamentals of the scientific method so this is a good step. I would love to see more peer-to-peer peer review technologies and websites developed though. There really is no reason to have publishing intermediaries in most cases. For example, many conferences and proceedings are essentially run by associations and societies etc.
xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
> you really don't you see the irony here?

You contradicted your own terms of debate trying to taint a commenter as "political" while having a history of commenting on similar items. I pointed that out as not consistent using your comments as evidence. Mildly ironic but no.

> it seems if anyone's out of place here it's you, not me

Negative vibe on isle five officer!! The very idea that technology is not adjacent to economics, politics, and demographics is silly. If the forum mods don't think that then boo!

xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
You have multiple comments discussing economics, politics of technology, and politics generally. Just look.. they are there.

You are insinuating that this story about politics and economics should not be treated in good faith because the poster is tainted in some way via linking to their comment history. Your post on the other poster's comments seems in bad faith imo. Plus, I find "negative vibe man" comments are not ideal.

xor99··on The coming tsunami of fakery
Hmm..I think the implementation of this stuff will also be via GUIs or even embedded AI (for music or like a SD modded 3D printer that dreams and prints in response to the artist). We will end up ascribing this to individuals who, possessing an ego, will look to become famous artists.

There's a lot of relevance where automated pipelines start interfering with the general population. Boomer parents on FB/etc. H/w I would urge the author to avoid only focussing on this from a digital art/nft moronospheric lens.

xor99··on The coming tsunami of fakery
"What is clear is that we will need to adapt to the new normal"

Ah yet again, how enlightening. How many times can this phrase be used and still have any meaning?

xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
A "negative vibe man" comment. A quick scroll through your comments shows lots of commenting on topics involving economics and politics. Offhand it would be easy to ascribe a "slant" to them. This is in bad faith. Please don't slander a story posted presumably in good faith.
xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
Its economics and politics, a quick scroll through your comments shows lots of commenting on topics involving economics and politics.

People who dismiss different opinions via implication of some kind of "negative vibe man" are not worthy of debate.. sorry.

xor99··on The UK's downturn is a warning for Europe
Seems like they are annoyed that the Conservatives can't meet the minimun standard requirements for governing a country. Seems accurate on many levels.
xor99··on Priti Patel urges Meta to give up on end-to-end encryption plans
Haha, it is the cousin of Ameribrained but for England.. so not that creative. The incoming crew in Westminster have caught it bad.
xor99··on How do strong muscles keep your brain healthy?
This sounds like popular metaphor presented as science. Ever heard of meatheads haha?
xor99··on Priti Patel urges Meta to give up on end-to-end encryption plans
Engerbrained morons. Kind of crazy to be put in a position of supporting Facebook but there you go. Didn't Grant Schapps just suggest number plates for bicycles? This is in the same territory but much more dangerous versus freedom of speech.
xor99··on I recreated famous album covers with DALL-E
Generative art and by extension DALL-E has a very fast attention decay imo. We can't avoid noticing patterns and getting bored by them. This makes art and music fun because the things that stick and stay interesting JUST DO for some unknown reason.
xor99··on Ask HN: Best Small Oscilloscope?
Which one do you have? I wondered if the 2000 Series is better than the AD2 as its a good bit cheaper.
