xiconfjs··on Self-hosting my photos with Immich
I have the same concerns and that’s why I only use software which accept my directory structure as input and isn’t messing with it. I, for example, added my top directories of my image directory structure hand by hand each bit itself as a shared directory (read-only) to immich.

The main reason: I don’t trust software NOT deleting my photos. (Yes, I have an off-site) backup, but the restore would take time.

xiconfjs··on UniFi 5G
FAQ: "Can the UniFi 5G Max Outdoor work as a standalone device?" -> No. The UniFi 5G Max Outdoor must be adopted by a UniFi Cloud Gateway or UniFi Gateway and cannot function independently as a router or modem.

:(

We can only hope Valve‘s new „console“ will hit the market strong so they have another levarage to push the studios to implement appropiate, linux compatible anti-cheat.

xiconfjs··on Apple Debuts iPhone 17
It’s more about using it while it’s raining on my bike (attached to the handle). No need for a water-thight case so far.

Problem with used phones: no guarantee of water resistance. Many of the resold phones got their battery replaced, which itself it a good thing, but they are usually not applying the gasket required for water resistence.

It‘s still a bit flaky getting video acceleration (not talking about object detection but video decoding) working but after that it is one of the best solutions for live object detection I‘ve ever tried: no more small animals waking me up in the night.

P.S.: I‘m also supporting them with a yearly? subsciption to train the „A.I.“ model against false positives I provide which increased the accuracy even more.

xiconfjs··on Ask HN: What's the 2025 stack for a self-hosted photo library with local AI?
ACK. The best part is the one-time-pay option to unlock background sync with many different triggers which can be combined - mine 03:00 am with charger connected in my WLAN. Love the software.

Correct.
xiconfjs··on Locally hosting an internet-connected server
Usually it‘s about standing, resources and options. Serious problems like fibre cuts, local power outages and DDoS attacks are usually not in their scope and they have to wait for 3rd parties to fix these problems with little iptions to speed up those processes. Bigger ISP usually have teams/departments which have well established processes/solutions to tackle these problems. That said, I‘m totally aware that each of them (small or big ISP) have their pros and cons - as always it mainly depends on your use case and requirements.
xiconfjs··on Locally hosting an internet-connected server
For sure…in case of reaction times and flexibility they are great…Until something serious happens outside of their scope.
