xeroxmalf··on How to colocate your first server at a datacenter
Also don't forget to check out the rented dedicated server market too. It provides a good middle ground in cost/power/performance to the extremes of cloud providers and colocation.
xeroxmalf··on 48 Core ARM-64 processors from Cavium to challenge Xeons?
Directly from the article: "Cavium plans four families of Thunder chips, targeting storage, networking, and security systems in addition to servers. Each family will use a different set of I/O and accelerator blocks from Cavium's existing silicon library."

So no, these are not just designed for networking equipment, they are planned to target 4 different areas.

xeroxmalf··on Joyent us-east-1 rebooted due to operator error
Seems like not allowing food or drink near a device worth over 10 zeroes would be a no-brainer, but hindsight is tricky like that.
xeroxmalf··on Running ASP.NET vNext on OS X and Linux
Good thing it says ASP.NET vNext then.
xeroxmalf··on 6 weeks after release, Samsung S5 VZN/ATT still not rooted. Bounty at $17k
Its important to note as well that "unlocking" and "rooting" are very different with very different end goals. One allows you to move between phone carriers (unlocked phone), the other allows you full software control of your phone (rooting).
xeroxmalf··on Teen Arrested for 30+ Swattings, Bomb Threats
I wasn't joking. He should have to pay back the 'damages' or 'pain and suffering' or whatever terminology you would like.
xeroxmalf··on Teen Arrested for 30+ Swattings, Bomb Threats
> "According to the FBI, each swatting incident costs emergency responders approximately $10,000." (from the article)

So $10k each, and 30+ times: Make him pay that $300k back.

xeroxmalf··on Poll: How do you manage your passwords?
This is my exact setup. Haven't had any issues with it so far.
xeroxmalf··on Undisclosed hole in openssh on FreeBSD and Juniper?
It's not a good reason that they aren't disclosing, it's a personal reason.
xeroxmalf··on Ask HN: What language should I learn next?
>I would love to do desktop apps on Linux but it seems that my only real choice there is C++

Lots of Linux apps are also written in Python, so that might be something to look into.

edit Can only receive the text code on US-based numbers, but you can get one of those from something like Google Voice for free.

xeroxmalf··on Emacs is Sexy
If they allowed that, would they still be charging the [0] $185,000 per ".<whatever>" gTLD like they did with the current rounds?

xeroxmalf··on Flexcoin is shutting down
FYI, they got into TradeHill but couldn't compromise[0] any of the user accounts because of the architecture of the site.

xeroxmalf··on TSA Reportedly Demands To Inspect Man’s Luggage For Bitcoin
"Update: A TSA spokesman says they have been unable to find the agents in question or verify the incident. I’m told Baker’s story is complicated by the fact that protocol would be to contact law enforcement if someone was taking large amounts of cash for a suspected purpose, rather than request additional screening."

So basically, he most likely had some 'TSA' agents that were trying to rob him.

xeroxmalf··on Richard Lynch, an awesome PHP community guy and former colleague needs our help
Though some heart attacks are "natural causes" many could actually be prevented[0] if the patient had access to specialists and testing.

xeroxmalf··on Valve Unveils 13 Steam Machines, With Specs And Prices
I was really hoping for some interesting case designs to use for an HTPC/steam machine.
xeroxmalf··on It's practically impossible for regular people to buy Bitcoin
For Canadians, there is Cavirtex. I had no problem becoming verified with them, and it was as simple as becoming say PayPal verified.
xeroxmalf··on 25 years ago I hoped we would extend Emacs to do WYSIWG word processing
I find the $70 for a text editor (sublime) to be expensive. Price is relative.
xeroxmalf··on How long do disk drives last?
The RED drives you are refering to actually have some of the worst reviews around compared to even normal consumer drives. (Source: newegg reviews you mentioned)
xeroxmalf··on Why all OVH dedicated servers are "sold out"
Previous OVH customer and now current Hetzner customer here. I've been impressed with Hetzner's internal tools (Robot) and their support has been quick (had a faulty server, had it replaced inside of an hour).
xeroxmalf··on Show HN: My new domain search tool
Reminds me of http://domai.nr/
xeroxmalf··on OVH launches 2.99€/mo dedicated servers (2G RAM, 500G disk)
Hetzner does in fact require the exact same verification for new customers.
xeroxmalf··on CPU core estimation with JavaScript
"Estimated 14 cores - Took 22.704 seconds."

i5-2500k 4cores - 4 threads.

xeroxmalf··on Inside the Race to Build the World’s Fastest Bitcoin Miner
The new generation of mining hardware uses a lot less electricity then the GPU-based ones of before.
