xd··on Nuclear fallout is showing up in U.S. honey, decades after bomb tests
You know what would be a really nice HN feature.. when you submit a URL it can be flagged as "pay per view" and I can have a profile setting to filter them out.
xd··on Linux Foundation spends just 3.4% of its money on Linux
Most of the spending seems to be indirect which isn't immediately obvious - but "Project Support" ties in with their objectives as laid out from wikipedia... I couldn't find a clear mission statement on their website.

"The Linux Foundation (LF) is a non-profit technology consortium founded in 2000 as a merger between Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group to standardize Linux, support its growth, and promote its commercial adoption. It also hosts and promotes the collaborative development of open source software projects. It is a major force in promoting diversity and inclusion in both Linux and the wider open source software community." [1]

xd··on Leaving MySQL
Innodb can be split into individual per table files and has had this ability for years.
xd··on This word does not exist
"a word that does not exist; it was invented, defined and used by a machine learning algorithm."

I've minimal understanding of AI/ML but from what I think I know, isn't it all based on probability and therefore the quote above that these words don't exist is.. possibly wrong?

xd··on Epic launches anti-cheat support for Linux, Mac, and Steam Deck
Anyone remember PunkBuster? If anything took more out of the soul of gaming in them days I'd love to know what. It never managed to keep on top of "hackers" but some how managed to destroy the legitimate gamer communities - I got kicked so much I just gave up in the end playing publicly.

Does anyone even bother anymore with online gaming without using hacks? I've never strayed far from private servers for over a decade now.

xd··on Serial swatter who caused death gets five years in prison
"Do a little investigation first to try to corroborate the claim before treating it seriously!"

If the police don't act swiftly enough and harm was to come to anyone they'd be criticised for not taking it seriously. Police can't win either way. If you were the person in need would you want an immediate response or a little investigation first?

xd··on Woman catches state police attaching tracker to her car, now they want it back
What's your experience of drug dealers? I'm really curious where this new age anti police pro drug peddler mentality is coming from because I've had multiple friends over my 40 years lost to drugs so what the fuck is the defence of these people about? Many people that can be sold drugs are victims.. so yeah these drug dealer cretins are low status.
xd··on PHP in 2021
"They care nothing about elegance and have but a dim conception of larger CS/SE principles." / "I really see no reason to not choose a better tool in this day and age."

Every time there is a PHP news update these kind of posts come out. They claim some vague experience in PHP and then go on to list all these other wonderful languages you could be using instead and that insinuate you must be a bit of a shit developer to be using PHP.

Unfortunately this troll has been well fed.

xd··on Microsoft wins $21.9B contract with U.S. Army to supply AR headsets
"their basic needs met plus a little bit of cushion to enjoy life"

Who's responsibility is it to meet these needs?

xd··on Cookie Consent Speed Running Game
A DNT header should really be all that's needed .. but never seemed to gain traction.
xd··on UK 'Right to repair' law to come in this summer
I've repaired all my appliances myself over the last 20+ years, to say it's cheaper to replace is just plain false, even today. Most faults are easy fixes like sensors or motors and even the higher end PCB replacements work out cheaper.

However! if you are not inclined to fix yourself then the costs to have someone else fix your appliances may not work out as cost effective.

xd··on Rqlite: The lightweight, distributed relational database built on SQLite
In MySQL/MariaDB this is what's known as non-deterministic behaviour so row or mixed replication is used to mitigate.

Statement based (high level) replication is very useful for i.e. "insert into tbl0 select col0 from tbl1 order by col1" as you would only need to send the query not the individual row data.

xd··on PHP RFC: Enumerations
There's a good writeup that looks at a range of other languages implementation of enum, linked at the end of the RFC: https://github.com/Crell/enum-comparison
xd··on What is your favorite C programming trick? (2009)
I remember a good 20years ago a friend teaching me: !!
xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
Not an argument, just a point of view for which I'm open to any and all.

edit: but the cost of rare earth mining is huge and if you don't want to do your own research... that's your call.

xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
What about EV trucks?
xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
And axle weight comes from the weight of the cargo be it human or goods...

edit: just looked up what you said, really interesting, but makes me wonder if the transport of goods in smaller lorries for instance would ultimately be beneficial when you factor in cost of fuel, maintenance etc

xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
I never said anything that implied gas wasn't an issue .. simply stating a truth bomb about EV's environmental and human costs; lithium mining being the biggest one.
xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
Probably because they transport 1,400x more economic goods?
xd··on Victoria follows South Australia and imposes electric car road tax
What's the cost of mining lithium for starters.. before talking about fair.

edit: down voted for stating facts.. I've noticed this place is becoming very ideological.. or maybe I'm getting old.

xd··on “You Have Zero Privacy” Says Internal Royal Canadian Mounted Police Presentation
"[a] person is privileged to use such force as reasonably appears necessary to defend him or herself against an apparent threat of unlawful and immediate violence from another."[1]"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-defense_(United_States)

In England it's got what I think is clearer definition:

"Force is reasonable if a reasonable person would think it necessary to use force and would have used the same level of force as the defendant."

As far as I'm aware these definitions apply to police officers.

xd··on “You Have Zero Privacy” Says Internal Royal Canadian Mounted Police Presentation
Yeap, there are bad actors in the police just like in all other walks of life. Do we demonise doctors because of the likes of Harold Shipman?
xd··on “You Have Zero Privacy” Says Internal Royal Canadian Mounted Police Presentation
The majority of people do not care because the police can legally blow your door of its hinges, kick the shit out of you, drag you into a van, and stuff you in a cell all before you get to the due process part of the justice system.

No, the police can not legally "kick the shit out of you", they can use reasonable force if you decide to ignore or refuse instructions when they have a warrant which has been obtained via the courts. The warrant will only be granted after presenting substantive evidence that the person they are wishing to arrest has committed serious crime i.e. possession / distribution of indecent images of children, drugs, money laundering etc which required rapid entry to secure evidence. They don't get to enter your property for minor offences or on a whim.

xd··on Americans are more worried about their sons than their daughters
DV is generally a pattern of varied abusive behaviour ranging from physical, physiological, controlling, coercion etc.. not a one off bar fight.
xd··on Americans are more worried about their sons than their daughters
Sounds like they were bullying the other kids.

I've never been a fan of violence but as a kid I loved playing rough, especially wrestling and these days enjoy a bit of a judo; but have zero desire to get into a pub brawl. When it comes to kids I think people confuse unwanted and mutual roughhousing.

xd··on PHP 8: Before and After
As yes, the 2012 fractal of bad design, being peddled out yet again - your post is just pure hate, it adds no valid argument whatsoever.
xd··on Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from Covid-19
But it's still an effect of the treatment. If you perform a study on people whom have been ill you're going to get results that show all the symptoms of illness.. the study could have been done with any illness and likely show cognitive decline.
xd··on Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from Covid-19
Also, I had a brief look over the paper but couldn't find anything to control for isolation since lockdown .. surely this would of had an effect on peoples cognition.

On a side note, maybe it's just me but I keep seeing comments that don't follow a "politically" accepted view point, being down vote like yours.
