xd··on Lufthansa has not banned AirTags
The fact you lost your child is the basis of your argument against me, beggars belief.. a phone is not by default a device to track a kid an air tag is.. my kid is 10 and yours is 2... waaaay different situation.

Edit: I lost my kid plenty of times as well.. they love to run off don't they.

xd··on Lufthansa has not banned AirTags
Thanks, really! I appreciate it.. makes for a far better rant when the spelling/grammar is on point.

OT, kinda. My eldest kid is in the final year of UK junior school so finally cut lose to walk to and from school as is culturally acceptable here.. I gave her a phone so she could let us (mum/dad) know she was on her way home from school, deciding to go home to a friends etc.. the school caught wind and apparently it was against school policy so she was disciplined (along with a number of her peers) - the extent of which was limited when I and her mother (and her peers parents) told them we had given them the option irregardless of the school policy.

The school response was to put an air tag on her!... I gave her a phone because they can't take change (money) to school which could be used for a payphone; but they don't exist any more, barely anyway.. fuck air tags, I don't care about property I care about people and air tags are as abusive bit of tech as it gets, how is a kid supposed to grow up knowing they are being tracked 24/7.. my example is nothing compared to what happens to people with abusive partners.. this kinda tech can not be normalised.

Can you show me an example of the 10x less code?
xd··on Ask HN: Getting tired of complexity in web development
So you have 0.1% SQL skill .. work on it.
xd··on Ask HN: Getting tired of complexity in web development
It's just my opinion based on 20+ years of developing data management solutions across thousands of customers.. any framework employs a set of beliefs and that creates a box you are constrained to think in, hell SQL is one of them boxes. You say "They're not a replacement for being knowledgeable in SQL whatsoever." .. so what are they then?

Edit: I once spent/wasted almost 2 years of my life trying to develop the ultimate ORM. In the end I replaced it for a simple directory structure of API end points where every .php file does a specific job with good old SQL queries in there.

xd··on Ask HN: Getting tired of complexity in web development
I used Postgres when I first started out in ~2002 but it was slow, really slow, I switched to MySQL and it was fast and the customers happy. The MyISAM table engine was shit hot(fast) but it took me years to get my head around constraints and then indexes etc to actually get a basic level of competence and realise MyISAM was a bunch of trade off's for performance. Anyway I loved PG and still do romanise it.. what if I stayed.. what could have been.. but it didn't get the job done, for me.

Edit: oh yeah Smarty is still a thing and so is PHPClasses.org whilst I think about it.. I've nothing against PHPClasses apart from it tries to pass itself off as something other than it is.. an amateur coders exchange.

xd··on Ask HN: Getting tired of complexity in web development
Oh god ORM's, pointless waste of time and just an excuse not to learn SQL.. almost as bad as the #1 PHP fallacy; Smarty (which is still a thing).

I bumped into an old friend recently and he and his wife work at a real estate company. They were raving about this new system they are a couple of years into the development of and how it's built on this great "Kubernetes" system.. they asked what I develop my products with and I almost felt embarrassed to say PHP and a couple of servers in two locations for redundancy that run Archlinux with a LAMP (LNMP? I guess with NGINX/MariaDB these days) stack .. same thing I've used for 20 years now (I was one of the first AL volunteers). When I asked what language their system is developed in they said Kubernetes, of course.

Anyway, it kind of reminds me of the days when everyone was developing a PHP Framework .. I've never used one and if I was to apply for a PHP job I'd be unlikely to succeed as I'm very specialised in getting shit done.

I'm a guy in his 40's and you didn't actually supply me with any advice apart from "do as I say"... I see a lot of that these days. I've no idea who this Elliot is and don't really care - if you want to provide advice at least provide some substance.

Hey Dang, I've always had showdead on.. but no-dr-onboard is correct in that some comments have vanished way beyond the delete time limit.

Yeap.. I guess they breached some community guidelines or maybe was just a whim of some self serving mod.

edit: I've emailed HN for comment.

Makes you wonder what all the current anti-straight-white-male ideology will amount to in the long run. Hate should be called out for what it is no matter the group it's aimed at - to set a clear example of civil expectations but I don't see that happening in my lifetime if ever.

Edit: I would love to have a dialogue with the downvoters - my email is in my bio.

xd··on Police CyberAlarm Uses Alarming Cryptography
If, I assume the data is being sent back to their servers over HTTPS .. wouldn't that make this process of encrypting the "data" superfluous and have no impact on the overall security - or did I miss something?

I'm not defending this mess just curious.

xd··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
I have a few ex-battery hens and what I now view as a good egg is one you can crack into a pan of boiling water and it holds together, giving you a perfect poached egg in a couple of minutes. Store bought eggs tend to fall apart in water.
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
The security and integrity of data shouldn't rely on itself to prove such.. imagine trying to store a checksum within the data it represents for instance.
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
"You got downvoted because storing encrypted secrets is fine."

Storing where?

xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
I hope it's just people trying to cover for Adafruit.. which is fair enough and I get that. They have done way more good than this little hiccup - but it's so important to not play around with real PPI data or be exposing that or secrets to version control.
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
It's personal data, would you want your personal data being uploaded to github - in this instance so someone can learn data analysis?
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
It's not a "process" it's looking at logs to see if someone accessed X in a certain time frame. The words "forensic process" in this instance is used to make it appear there is something more involved going on.. if say there was 1 access to the data how will this "forensic process" play out tracing who accessed the data and whom they passed it on to - they don't know and have no "forensic process" to know.
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
I'm the OP on this comment. The fact I've been 50/50 voted for what is quite frankly common sense is disappointing. Just ask yourself a simple question; would you want your personal information uploaded to GitHub for someone to learn data analysis and would you be happy about that?
xd··on A GitHub repository was public-viewable
PII data should never touch github, ever. Good job you're not in the EU with GDPR as this process alone implies a serious lack of security due diligence.

"Adafruit team began the forensic process" - Checking audit logs is hardly a forensic process and the rest of the speel about "privacy lawyers and legal experts" feels like a poor effort to regain some trust.

It's the cross section of subjective vs objective .. I'd much rather you give me an actual problem you have and let me have a go at explaining a solution for you. All this tells me is you are recruiting generically and have no idea who you need on your team.

xd··on High beef prices and the destruction of independent cattle ranching
I didn't word that well, what I meant to say was get some exposure to chickens and a keeper who will give you the insights you need to understand what's required for happy chickens - even if that is a bunch of Youtube videos.

In Britain a lot of people rush out to get rescue hens and stick them in a rabbit run on their patio which is what I try to avoid encouraging.. being turned into dog food is a better outcome than the quality of life some chickens get.

xd··on High beef prices and the destruction of independent cattle ranching
I took on some caged hens (about 6months back now) that were off for slaughter to be turned into dog food. Straight away they took to the patch of land in my garden I gave them and laid eggs .. the eggs they lay are on another level to anything store bought. I can put a pan of water on boil over a stove; crack an egg into it and have a perfect poached egg 2-3mins later. They are creamy and rich as if they have life compared to what now tastes almost rancid in store eggs.

Waking up at sun rise every day to let them out is a pain but more than worth it. That said I wouldn't recommend keeping hens unless you've had exposure to them on some level other than visiting a farm.
