xcv123··on Ed Stone, scientist and salesman for the Voyager mission, has died
It wasn't a swipe. I pointed out that haven't been paying attention to probe launches. Nothing offensive about that. I also wasn't paying attention for years. So what?
xcv123··on Ed Stone, scientist and salesman for the Voyager mission, has died
They have already been launching these missions for years on a regular basis. Interesting that no one here bothers to do a web search before commenting.

xcv123··on Microsoft Is Dead (2007)
"Feels"? What is that about?

MS has $3.5 Trillion market cap. Same as Apple.

Azure is catching up with AWS and could take the lead.

Nothing like IBM 20 years ago.

Windows is a small fraction of their business. Azure is bigger than the Windows, Office, and Xbox/Gaming divisions combined.

xcv123··on Microsoft Is Dead (2007)
Microsoft earned $22B net profit in the past quarter alone, and their debt is only $40B. That's not a zombie company.

Projection. Look in the mirror and see who is the asshole. You're being an antisocial virtue signalling narcissist. I don't mean it as an insult, it's just an obvious fact. Technically you have some kind of personality disorder. You got flagged for a reason. Everyone else can see it.

I’m saying that he should be sentenced to life in prison for his crimes against humanity. Using “he” instead of “they” is unforgivable. All of the source code should be printed out and burned and no one can be allowed to use this evil browser.
xcv123··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder
Thanks for letting us know this extremely important and relevant information about the founder. We need to shut down this project and get him cancelled and permanently banned from the software industry.

The alpha release is intended to be fully functional, in the usual sense of alpha testing. That is ambitious. It's not like a shitty game on Steam (or Star Citizen) where "alpha" means 10% of features completed. That is 30 million lines of complexity due within 2 years. Ignoring lines of code, some of these problems within a browser are time consuming and difficult to solve from scratch.

xcv123··on Ladybird Web Browser becomes a non-profit with $1M from GitHub Founder
Firefox and Chromium have 30+ million lines of code (excluding comments and blank lines). You underestimate the complexity of a web browser.
xcv123··on Americans Have Lost the Plot on Cooking Oil
One thing the papers show is there is a natural rhythm of hormones and metabolism, which is adaptable to some extent, and you just need to listen to your body. But if you are addicted to sugar / excessive carbs, and don't exercise, then playing around with meal times is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Your body signals are malfunctioning.

Personally I have found a moderate size lunch and larger dinner, with a snack or two before or after dinner, is just perfect. Most people don't need three full meals a day. With moderate carbs I never go into a food coma. Worst is eating a large breakfast which makes you feel tired just when you are starting the day and trying to be productive.

If you have trained your body to burn fat (moderate or low carb diet) then you will be running on fat reserves efficiently through the day until the first meal.

xcv123··on US prosecutors recommend Justice Department criminally charge Boeing
> A couple of hundreds dead due to bad engineering

In the Chinese cases I mentioned, the executives did not personally kill people. They only committed fraud, which put millions at risk of death when using their inferior products, which is comparable to what Boeing did.

The executives intentionally and knowingly committed fraud, which put anyone at risk when they fly in a 737 Max (millions of people per year). It was not the engineers fault. The engineers and quality inspectors concerns were ignored by management. The executives prioritized stock price over safety. I am not exaggerating when I say the executives committed fraud. That is the view of federal prosecutors.

In total 346 people died, and there would have been more deaths if the entire global fleet were not grounded for several years by international regulators. It's not just the Max. Anyone who flies in any Boeing aircraft is at risk if the company is committing fraud at this scale.

xcv123··on US prosecutors recommend Justice Department criminally charge Boeing
It is comparable. Boeing intentionally and criminally withheld information from regulators. They knew that MCAS would not be approved by regulators, intentionally ignored safety and quality concerns, then released it to the public. It was a criminal act which caused the death of hundreds of people and destroyed the reputation of the largest exporter in the US. If the equivalent happened in China there would be severe consequences. The CCP would not tolerate losing the reputation of their largest export industry. China is run by the CCP, not company executives. The executives would be thrown under the bus without hesitation.
xcv123··on Americans Have Lost the Plot on Cooking Oil
Yes those papers show that it is good to skip breakfast. Replied above.
xcv123··on Americans Have Lost the Plot on Cooking Oil
Eating too late is unhealthy, but that is not the same as skipping breakfast. Eating too late or too early both have negative results.

The first paper says:

"Unlike lunch and dinner, which are recommended early in the day, it has been proved that to have breakfast too early may be deleterious due to melatonin levels, which may still be high in the early morning."

The second paper references a 12 week randomized controlled trial that shows that it is good to skip breakfast, eating within a time restricted window (12:00 - 20:00).

Personally I usually aim for a TRE of 12:00 - 17:00 and that has worked well for me over the past 15 years. Skip breakfast, early dinner, as recommended by those papers. I feel lethargic and tired if I eat breakfast. Listen to your body.

Fifteen year olds are still growing, in the anabolic phase, so they should eat more often if they have the appetite. Forget it when you are a fully grown adult.

xcv123··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
I didn't read the comment. I wrote the comment.

Water Fast means only drinking water. Standard terminology. You can verify that with a quick Google search.

1 - 2 month survival estimate is for an ordinary person. If you're obese then you can survive up to a year without food.

For an ordinary person in reasonably good health, a 24 hour water fast only provides health benefits. Up to 3 days of water fasting is beneficial. I wouldn't recommend any longer than that.

The more frequently you fast, the easier it gets. Your body adapts to burning stored fat as fuel and the hormonal hunger triggers become less severe. I've reached the stage where 24 hours is easy.

xcv123··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
Most people browsing HN would survive 1 - 2 months without food. 24 hours is nothing. Your pot belly has a spare 50,000 calories.
xcv123··on Microsoft to delay release of Recall AI feature on security concerns
The delay of Recall has absolutely nothing to do with technical limitations.
xcv123··on Sleep deprivation disrupts memory
Try doing a 24 hour water fast. It will feel awful during the fast, but you may notice your mind is sharper the next day after a good sleep. Cleans out the cobwebs at a cellular level (autophagy). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3106288/

EDIT: I'm getting rate limited so cannot reply to the comment below.

Water fast means only drinking water. Tea or coffee is acceptable if black (meaning without milk or sugar).

"Water fasting is a type of fast during which you're not allowed to consume anything except water."

I would never do a fast that cuts out water/liquids. That is stupid.

xcv123··on Elon Musk drops suit against OpenAI and Sam Altman
I found a non-paywall copy of the article https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/apple-to-pay-openai-for-chatgpt-...

You are still missing the point and I think you have a persistent mental block. You are overthinking it. It's not that complicated.

The article says that Apple is partnering with OpenAI. It also says that OpenAI runs on Azure infrastructure.

Whatever they negotiate, the deal is intended to be a win-win for both sides in the long run. Obviously both sides are interested in making money. The article mentions future revenue sharing agreements and getting more users to subscribe to the paid ChatGPT.

Any increase of OpenAI/ChatGPT usage means an increased usage of (and dependency on) Microsoft/Azure infrastructure. I don't understand how this is so complicated to understand. OpenAI runs on Azure and more OpenAI usage/dependency means more Azure usage/dependency. Microsoft increases their cut of the AI market share as more Apple users use Microsoft infrastructure and of course they will make profit from that. None of these guys are doing it for charity.

Sorry for the shit language but I got tired of you not understanding anything.

Apple's services do not run on Azure. Apple's services run on Apple infrastructure.

OpenAI services run on Azure

Apple is a new partner of OpenAI. Apple will use OpenAI services which run on Azure. Hopefully that makes sense. It is not that complicated.

xcv123··on How much of a genius-level move was binary space partitioning in Doom? (2019)
We're talking about finding references or details of existing algorithms to solve a specific problem. What you are trying to do has nothing to do with that and it's a waste of time with an LLM.
