xavieralexandre··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
Not aware of such a law but there's a related European IOT project: http://big-iot.eu

BIG IoT is a European project to enable IoT Ecosystems. With our technologies, we enable cross- standard, cross-platform, and cross-domain IoT services and applications. We are embedded in the European IoT Platforms Initiative: https://iot-epi.eu

xavieralexandre··on Diesel is not better for the environment than electric
> collate shipments from multiple senders to a single recipient (like we used to do...)

Sounds interesting. What was this thing and the use cases?

xavieralexandre··on Can you buy your own train?
Best part of car trains in Switzerland is freeing the mountain passes from cars. Still a lot of cars and motorbikes enjoying hairpin turns and landscapes (Good for them!) but still way less traffic than otherwise.
xavieralexandre··on Apple updates its iMac line
The spinning disc drive is SATA and non proprietary (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2546+Bla...). The SSD is not and use a proprietary PCI-e connector (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2546+Bla...). You can find adapters though (https://www.amazon.de/Sintech-M-2-PCIe-2280-SSD-Karte-MZ-JPU...).

I boot off a Nvme SSD in an usb-c (https://www.delock.com/produkte/S_42600/merkmale.html) enclosure on my 2017 27" iMac. I do manage 1000 MB/s. Popping off the screen and using the right adapter and SSD you may be able to reach 2500 MB/s.

Getting max performance is not that obvious. You'll want to go through the the PCIe port and find a M2 NVME/PCIe Mac adapter.

xavieralexandre··on Piano Tuning
> Tuning up a piano from zero is a lot harder than it seems. As the tension on the cast iron frame increases it deforms a bit, enough to de-tune everything you've done up to that point. So the only way to get this done is to tune the whole thing up gradually and to pace yourself so you don't end up overstretching part of the frame or end up in a never ending cycle of de-tunings.

Like tensioning a bicycle wheel! Easy and rewarding process, highly recommended.

xavieralexandre··on Organic solar cells set 'remarkable' energy record
It's expensive and coloured instead of totally transparent but it indeed exists outside of the lab. They did build a wall out of them in my former campus:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dye-sensitized_solar_cell

https://actu.epfl.ch/news/epfl-s-campus-has-the-world-s-firs...

Non-native English speaker here: Is there a word to describe something which is transparent but alters colour?

xavieralexandre··on I want the world to scroll this way
There's one advantage to this way of scrolling most comments seem to miss: When you go to the next page by hitting Space or Page Down there's an interruption in the flow and you have to refocus at the top of the page once you're finished with the current page.

Here I like the fact than I can already start focusing at the top of the page while finishing to read the page at the bottom.

Weird, yes, but it has at least this advantage over classic pagination display.
