xamolxix··on List of BBC Web Pages Removed from Google's Search Results During July 2019
I would assume the same applies to the right to remain silent.
xamolxix··on How Diablo Was Reverse-Engineered Without Source Code [video]
> If you optimize for the short term, you are, by definition, not optimizing for the long term. So, short term optimization necessitates long term de-optimization.

I don't think " short term optimization necessitates long term de-optimization" follows. They can be both optimal.

> Spend money now and have none for retirement (short term benefit), or save money now, and have it during retirement (long term benefit)?

Spend money now on something that increases your chances to get more money (easy example education?) and benefit now and at retirement.

xamolxix··on Supporters gather after reports Assange may be ousted from embassy
Quite surprised he didn't attempt a covert exist before it came to this. If it is indeed true.
xamolxix··on Why Should Americans Be Grateful for $137 Insulin? Germans Get It for $55
> It costs £0 to see the doctor

Kind off, people do pay national insurance, also a part of the overall tax goes into the NHS as well.

xamolxix··on Everything you ever wanted to know about building a secure password reset (2012)
Or that this information is known by other people too.
xamolxix··on Iberia claims it is part of a department store to avoid Brexit shutdown
> Shouldn’t every member constantly threaten exit, then, whenever it wants more goodies?

No, they aren't held against their will. It's an (ever closer) union of friends.

xamolxix··on A Perspective on C++ Standardization in 2018
I believe templates make for slower compilation times.
xamolxix··on A Perspective on C++ Standardization in 2018
Is IO allowed in constexpr functions?
xamolxix··on Getting Started with Qt for WebAssembly
> Actually it's quite surpising that they can compile a Qt application to only 9MB, comparing to the size of the desktop shared objects!

Indeed. Presumably they "statically" link only the used functions, classes, etc.

xamolxix··on China now the most prolific contributor to physical sciences, engineering, math
> which removes English as an official language there

That's not true. The republic of Ireland and Malta (and possibly more) still have English as an official language.

xamolxix··on EU to recommend that member states abolish daylight saving time
Alas, Britain will likely not be in the EU by then.
xamolxix··on Your success isn’t down to free will – luck determines everything
If you argue for free will you are arguing for mind over matter. I'm not aware of anything in the laws of physics which allow free will.

That being said, we probably have to behave as if there was free will if we want (is that a pun?) any kind of society.

xamolxix··on Puerto Rico files for biggest ever U.S. local government bankruptcy
Well, maybe but what is the non-pressure course that the EU should take here? Isn't that what they (Greece) signed up for when they joined the euro?
xamolxix··on Puerto Rico files for biggest ever U.S. local government bankruptcy
> See eg Greece who were pressured to accept a deal worse than default to benefit foreign EU banks

how are they being pressured?

xamolxix··on UK government could force ISPs to block adult sites without age verification
> What makes you think parents are more reliable at this job than the government?

It's not about reliability. The government could be more reliable at telling you and you children how to dress, does that mean it should be able to?

xamolxix··on The Future of Memory
> I'm wondering if one day memory will be so cheap, we won't need garbage collection anymore.

I believe we would need infinite memory for that. Cheap extensive memory is still finite.

xamolxix··on Program your next server in Go
>> Statically linked binaries >You can have them with Java, too.

Is there a widely available FOSS implementation of this?

xamolxix··on We’re Losing the Climate-Change Battle
> We can't keep consuming power the way we are now.

Sure we can. We _maybe_ need to get better sources for it.

xamolxix··on Diversity and Inclusion at GitHub
It's called football
xamolxix··on Rails has won: The Elephant in the Room
> average (or even mediocre) dev

doesn't mediocre mean average?

xamolxix··on There’s No Such Thing as Free Will
>> Consciousness is not supernatural. >Prove it.

How do you prove a negative?

That aside, if the "supernatural" exists it's just laws of physics we do not understand yet.

xamolxix··on Prison phones are a predatory monopoly – One family fought back and won
> It is easy to abuse the weak, and there are few weaker than criminals. They have lost their freedom, and acquired an indelible stain on their reputation that will follow them through life, considerably reducing their economic value. They are weak socially, weak economically, and (to many) weak morally.

I agree, except you should replace "criminals" with prisoners or inmates. There is a difference, not all prison inmates are criminals and not all criminals are in prison.

xamolxix··on Count me as a systemd convert
I use:

"systemctl stop foo" then "stop^start"

Which will substitute stop with start in the previous command (in bash, not sure about other shells)

xamolxix··on AMD licences x86 tech to Chinese company
> The same reason it didn't go too well (binary compatibility)

That's the legacy

xamolxix··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?
> you'll still have no idea whether or not a modelled sentience is having a sentient experience of the universe around it, or whether it's faking its responses mechanically

Is there a difference? What is the difference? Doesn't duck typing apply here? If I act like I am sentient I am probably sentient.

xamolxix··on Dear Skype/Microsoft: Problems with Linux client
There is no mention of linux in the post you commented on.
xamolxix··on The nuke detectives – New ways to detect covert nuclear weapons
> What precisely is wrong with other states acquiring nuclear weapons, beyond the fact that it threatens US power?

Increases the risk of nuclear war?

xamolxix··on Windows 7 Update appears to be compromised?
> Unless, of course...

Unless the servers are compromised and used as C&C?

xamolxix··on Sergey Ananov: Two days on ice with three polar bears
He did say that he took it off to get the water out of it, although I guess it will still be wet. My guess would be he kept it on to protect himself from the wind.
xamolxix··on CoreCLR is now open source
> they'd probably immediately fork it and provide an alternate download in order to hurt Microsoft

They would fork it, but that is not why.
