xahrepap··on T-Mobile, AT&T oppose unlocking rule, claim locked phones are good for users
Ah, sorry. I forgot part of the story :)

No, after over a month of them saying "it'll take a week for it after I escalate" and then me calling a week later and starting the whole conversation over, one day it finally was unlocked. And I moved to a new carrier.

xahrepap··on T-Mobile, AT&T oppose unlocking rule, claim locked phones are good for users
I was already an existing TMobile customer. I bought myself and my wife an iPhone 11 in cash when the phones were brand new. Never had a contract. Already had an LTE plan, didn't change that plan at all. Just bought two new phones from TMobile and had them slap the sims in.

Fast forward to a couple months ago, I happened to notice while browsing my TMobile account that my phone was being reported as "Carrier Locked" with subtext that said "This phone is not eligible to be unlocked". Not my wife's though, hers was listed as "Unlocked". It took over a month of being yanked around by TMobile reps telling me they had to "escalate but the issue will be fixed within a week". It never was.

They would ask me why I wanted it unlocked. I would just respond something respectful but firm along the lines of "Because it's my phone. I paid for it. You have no business locking my device"

The way I see it, it was either theft or false advertising, plain and simple. Either they stole the phone from me after I bought it. Or, they sold me a device as unlocked but never realized that promise. It should have NEVER been locked. It makes me mad just thinking about it. I don't understand why a carrier even has the power to remotely lock a phone that was never theirs to lock in the first place.

This is all to say: I agree with your observation. They deserve heavy handed regulation because they have proven they will abuse any inch you give them.

xahrepap··on Apple Passwords’ generated strong password format
even worse when they don't properly enforce it and instead silently truncate it.

There was a PayPal bug just a couple years ago where the reset-password page didn't enforce length like other pages did. So it allowed you to create an otherwise illegal password and then your account is completely locked out (I guess, unless you realized the truncation was happening...)

And so I would reset my password, generate a new one... and it would happen again. Took me a while to realize it was the length and not a special character I added messing up with bad encoding logic or something.

xahrepap··on DeskPad – A virtual monitor for screen sharing
I used that until we moved to Teams for all video calls. And it doesn’t have that feature :(

I’ve looked around for an app like this. But they’re all paid and the security prompts are a little scary.

xahrepap··on Helping wikis move away from Fandom
I’ve wondered about this wrt public transportation. They keep raising prices, making it less affordable for people. Eventually basically no one is riding, so they … raise prices.

It seems needlessly expensive to me to run empty busses. I’d like to see if cheaper transportation can actually make more money.

xahrepap··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
+1 here. I've been facilitating a video game maker club for kids aged 11-15. I have ~7 kids who come. Most kids are 11-13 but 2 are 15.

Since they're all new to programming in general the club has mostly been me teaching them. The kids are having a ton of fun. It's slow moving. But they love it.

They also have the GUI scripting instead of the javascript. I haven't actually tried it.

xahrepap··on Apple adds feature that tries to "autocorrect" file extensions, and fails
It’s actually not _predicting_ what emoji you want. There’s aliases assigned to each emoji and you are presented with the options based on the last word you typed.

You might know this already, but how Apple has coded it is it’ll replace the last word with an emoji unless you put a trailing space. But if you put down a space first it’ll add the emoji. So in your examples you would write “I hope tomorrow is sunny pray” and choose the emoji and it will be “I hope tomorrow is sunny ”

xahrepap··on Kotlin for data analysis
I do the same on Safari on iPhone. Enable the accessibility setting and browsers can't lock your zoom anymore.
xahrepap··on Show HN: I made an open-source Loom alternative
Yeah. I get that. And I’m sure there’s some SEO-style positive feedback you get for it. But also being able to pitch it to me in a simple way and then using Loom as an example I think would be more helpful.

“Screen recording software that emphasizes simple sharing. An open source alternative to Loom”. Still super simple but is more useful to people less exposed to your world.

xahrepap··on Show HN: I made an open-source Loom alternative
Some honest feedback: describe your product/tool without using a competitor’s name. I’m on mobile and the landing page only tells me “recording software” and “Loom” before it drops into Twitter like 3rd party comments.

I honestly have never used Loom. I don’t know what it is. Do you really want me to have to go look up “the competition” just to know who you are?

xahrepap··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
Slightly different angle: I’ve been digitizing my grandparents’ journals. Something I’ve appreciated is the mundane.

“Had a headache. Went to bed early” seeing how often my grandpa was sick was very eye opening to me.

“Got the X repaired/replaced. Cost me $Y and it took Z days to finish”

“I sat and just visited with $Child. What a good kid. He’s just a teen. He told me about his friends and school”

Etc. I don’t know. I guess reading a normal life makes me feel better. Growing up I thought they were perfect. Seeing they were people just like me with very similar struggles is actually fun.

xahrepap··on Certain dogs are capable of learning the names for more than 100 different toys
I had a Samoyed when I was a child that knew Sunday. We had a specific routine for him while we went to church. He’d stay in the backyard in his large kennel while we were gone. After not too long we’d wake up Sunday morning and he’d go straight to his kennel. :)

In our case it was probably him sensing other things that only happened on Sundays.

xahrepap··on Walmart buying TV-brand Vizio for its ad-fueling customer data
I bought an LG over a year ago and haven’t connected it to any network ever. Works pretty great. Hasn’t asked me once to connect. Haven’t seen a single ad.
xahrepap··on Should toggle button show its current state or the state to which it'll change? (2010)
I agree. Teams is an app of a constant stream of little frustrations to me. It’s led me to believe that no one who develop/designs uses this tool at all internally.

Not just confusing UI, but buggy UI. It’s not abnormal for people on my team to have “unread” indicators of messages they can’t get rid of. When you focus the app it does a silent refresh and if you start typing too soon the refresh finishing will delete what you typed.

Tons of stuff like this. It’s infuriating.

xahrepap··on How not to bomb your offer negotiation (2016)
I hate the game and don’t like to negotiate either. Thanks for the advice.

Similarly once I was given an offer I for a job I wasn’t looking for. It was a nice jump higher than what I was making. But I was happy with my current job.

I politely turned it down. Went to my current boss, explained that I got an offer, turned it down because I wasn’t looking for change but felt like that offer showed I was worth more than they were paying and would appreciate a bump.

I got a raise. I was happy. He was happy.

xahrepap··on FTC bans TurboTax from advertising 'free' services, calls deceptive advertising
Next I’d like them to go after windshield chip repair shops and pharmacies that advertise “free*” services. Where free == paid by your insurance. Assuming your insurance will pay for all of it.

Free doesn’t mean paid for someone you paid to handle it for you.

xahrepap··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
My point is: the wall blew out. That’s never happened before. We should not allow this to be okay because no one died this time.

Overall statistics improving doesn’t mean you have permission to start throwing a random person off the plane every year.

There’s an xkcd about an online seller and a bobcat…

xahrepap··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
I've heard a lot of people say this in these comment threads, and I think this glosses over the actual issue: safety is getting worse, not better or even staying the same. So it's MORE statistically significant than it was. The trend is heading the wrong way.

Air safety going down is a trend you want to stop ASAP. Not wait around until it's just as dangerous as something else like driving your car.

xahrepap··on The surprising genius of sewing machines [video]
I have a wide selection of computers in my home. 3DPrinters, CNC, Microcontrollers, rpis, desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, TVs, etc.

The one computer that “just works” and stays out of the way the most? My wife’s embroidery machine. When she wants it off, it’s off. When she wants to do classic sewing, it works like normal. It has some buttons to do traditionally mechanical operations automatically. But it also has those mechanical options as well. (Raising the foot, for example)

And like you said: it has never once asked her to subscribe.

It’s my favorite computer in the house. :) (and the most expensive)

xahrepap··on The right to use adblockers
I turn off broadcasts so I don’t have to listen. And if I record them I fast forward them.

I hate billboards. I feel like they’re too intrusive and wouldn’t mind seeing a ban.

Especially the ones that are back lit. Can’t believe advertisers are given the right to attempt to distract drivers the most.

xahrepap··on One in five young Americans thinks the Holocaust is a myth
That’s absolutely false.

I can be disgusted at both. I can be more disgusted at how much more terrible Israel’s destruction is AND be disgusted that Hamas attacked in the first place. And still not be pro-either-side.

The amount of death and the kind of death happening is disgusting. Period.

I think the “stupid” ones, to borrow your word, are the ones refusing to see that.

xahrepap··on Researchers identify largest ever solar storm in 14k-year-old tree rings
I went to Europe years ago for work. And the adapter for my macbook work gave me wasn't grounded. Whenever I plugged my computer in I could feel a buzz when i touched the aluminum body. Others thought I was crazy. But it freaked me out and only charged when I wasn't touching it.

You make me feel like I wasn't making it all up. haha!

xahrepap··on An Atlassian Confluence vulnerability is being exploited in the wild
From: https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2023-22515

> Atlassian has been made aware of an issue reported by a handful of customers where external attackers may have exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in publicly accessible Confluence Data Center and Server instances to create unauthorized Confluence administrator accounts and access Confluence instances. Atlassian Cloud sites are not affected by this vulnerability. If your Confluence site is accessed via an atlassian.net domain, it is hosted by Atlassian and is not vulnerable to this issue.

xahrepap··on The Decades-Long Travesty That Made Millions of Americans Mistrust Their Schools
I hate it. The over reliance on “Canvas” Which on the surface seems like such of a convenience. But every time I watch my kid turn in his math homework by holding his 2-sided worksheet up to the webcam I just cringe. He’ll never get any reasonable feedback on his work because it’s impossible to read.

Some assignments have “spot check” questions where you input the answer on Canvas. Instructions like “make sure you spell it right”, “use ‘i’ for infinity”, and “do not put spaces after the commas” should’ve made the teacher realize it was a bad idea. But alas.

And the teachers are SO GOOD otherwise. It makes me wonder how much of this is being forced ON THEM.

xahrepap··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
And when you finally have a along controls everything is overloaded.

Dish forced a new remote on us last time a device broke and they replaced it. It has far fewer buttons. I’m sure it helps getting familiar with it on a super basic level. But the old one wasn’t that complicated anyhow.

But here’s the kicker: there’s no fast forward or rewind buttons. There no stop button. No record button. All of these (and more) have been turned into menu items and/or secret chords on the remote.

Oh. And it has a mic on it too. Hard pass.

Tv remote is just the easy example. I see it all over the place. Sleek no longer is pretty to my eyes. If I see something that I have to interact with these days and it looks sleek, I see frustration.

xahrepap··on Family Echo – Free online family tree maker
https://www.familysearch.org/ does exactly this. Only information of people who are deceased is viewable outside the account of the person who entered the information.

It's run by the LDS Church, so there's a religious tone to their marketing. But you don't have to be a member or religious to use it.

xahrepap··on AMD may get across the CUDA moat
I know it's still different than what you're looking for, so you probably already know this, but many projects like this have the Dockerfile on github which shows exactly how they set up the image. For example:

https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm-docker/blob/master...

They also have some for Fedora. Looks like for this you need to install their repo:

    curl -sL https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/rocm.gpg.key | apt-key add - \
    && printf "deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/$ROCM_VERSION/ jammy main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rocm.list \
    && printf "deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/$AMDGPU_VERSION/ubuntu jammy main" | tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list \
then install Python, a couple other dependencies (build-essential, etc) and then the package in question: rocm-dev

So they are doing the packaging. There might even be documentation elsewhere for that type of setup.

xahrepap··on Netflix Ships Last DVD
I still buy everything I like and want to ever watch again on physical media. I try to get the DVD/Blu-ray combos.

I think it’s worth it even if it’s available on D+ or whatever other platform. And I can rip them and stream them myself. Which I sometimes do for trips.

I think while a little tedious sometimes, it’s worth it.

I hate the Everything-For-Rent world we live in today.

xahrepap··on Raspberry Pi 5
I use one for each of the following. None of which I think are terribly novel anymore:

- Octopi - PiHole - Grafana/Prometheus for my local network (I push Speedtest results, ping results, among other things to it) - home-made SNES/NES minis

I’m excited to try using the new Pi for a more comprehensive option for a retro arcade including many games that didn’t run very well for me last time I tried. (I instead used a home-built small PC)

xahrepap··on Getting into Pinball
Thanks! That's very encouraging. I'm excited again. I do have some arcade buttons laying around, as well as an old LCD TV. I'll throw together a nice POC :)
