x775··on Gaming worth more than video and music combined
I appreciate that you have found enjoyment in some games despite categorising most of them as terrible. However, whilst the quality of any game is entirely subjective, I would very much argue that most people would not spend time playing a game they do not enjoy. I thus reckon a metric like average time played is a telling one in terms of whether people who purchased the game actually enjoy it. Mind you, most platforms offer refunds with no questions asked should a given game not meet your expectations.

I appreciate that games might not be your thing, and I am sure many share that sentiment and thus spend their time and money elsewhere accordingly. I am not sure, however, how you can objectively reach the above conclusion. I would encourage you to browse through https://steamdb.info/graph/ which, among many other metrics, tracks average and median hours played for each title on Steam. If you hover popular titles like PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS or Grand Theft Auto V, for instance, you will find average total hours of 330.6 and 165.6, respectively. You can naturally also find niche titles with fewer hours; e.g. Broforce at 10.5 hours, or Blood Harvest at 7.0 hours, though niche titles tend to be cheaper (and shorter!) than mainstream triple-A games. It thus goes without saying that for those who do enjoy games, many find dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of hours of enjoyment in a single title.
x775··on Ask HN: What was your experience using a graph database?
I worked on a project which employed the Gremlin API on an Azure Cosmos DB instance. This configuration worked (largely) seamlessly, though it is worth accentuating how we worked explicitly with graphs and consequently benefited from being able to actually store and query our data as graphs. An alternative could have been Neo4j, which, based on preliminary research, would have done the job, too. Overall, it was a nice, new experience which arguably presented a learning curve. One piece of advice, however, would be to thoroughly evaluate your requirements and strongly consider whether you actually need a graph database in the first place! If you are dealing with an excessive amount of interconnected relationships, definitely consider this option. If not, chances are you will have something functioning faster with a conventional database.
x775··on The Bitter Regrets of a Useless Chinese Daughter
Thank you for providing your perspective.
x775··on Italy Wikipedia shuts down in protest at proposed EU copyright law
I encourage everyone in the EU to reach out to their representatives by mail (or by phone, even better!) and let them know how you feel about the proposal. I have already sent mails to mine, and have at time of writing gotten two responses indicating a shared opposition of the proposal. I moreover asked whether they are experiencing any significant surge in comments compared to other controversial topics to which they, much to my disappointment, said they are not. Whilst this likely depends entirely on the representative in question, I was reassured that every comment was read and taken into consideration - if anything then in an aggregated manner.
x775··on Ethereum founder warns cryptocurrencies 'could drop to near zero at any time'
Whilst the reminder of not investing more than you are willing and able to lose cannot be repeated enough times, I do reckon it is important to put things into perspective: A very significant majority of traditional start-ups eventually fail, e.g. these articles from Forbes listing 90% (https://www.forbes.com/sites/neilpatel/2015/01/16/90-of-star...) and 80% (https://www.forbes.com/sites/ericwagner/2013/09/12/five-reas...), respectively. I consequently do not think a statement like this should be viewed as anything other than a simple and healthy reminder of how failure is inherent to entrepreneurship - something which naturally carries a risk for any investor. It is, however, also worth stressing how this, still largely unregulated, world attracts fraudsters. It is therefore not entirely unreasonable to assume an even greater percentage of projects will eventually hit 0 compared to traditional start-ups, and that investors thus ought to pay even closer attention to what they buy.

EDIT: Downvotes, why?

x775··on Firefox 59 to strip path information from referrer values for 3rd parties
I have not had issues thus far signing in on sites, though that might just have been dumb luck. I appreciate the heads-up and the additional information, thanks!
x775··on Firefox 59 to strip path information from referrer values for 3rd parties
That is a very informative source, thank you!
x775··on Firefox 59 to strip path information from referrer values for 3rd parties
In about:config, setting 'network.http.sendRefererHeader' to 0 (default is 2) will stop the referer header from being sent, and the document.referrer from being set. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.http.sendRefererHeader for more information.
x775··on Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange hacked, losing $530M: NHK
Ouch.

Something like this is incredibly regrettable, and a large amount of presumably novice investors have no doubt burnt their fingers. Yet, incidents like this once again underscore the importance of controlling your private keys. Until you do that, you do not really own your coins.

I suppose this also highlights the need for decentralised exchanges.

x775··on Relativ – A VR headset that you can build yourself for $100
This is really cool -- also great to see a teacher having an impact in this manner. Awesome!
x775··on Why We're Updating the Minimum BitPay Payment Amount to $100
Sure, and a 40% transaction fee reduction sounds great in theory, but with a median fee of ~$28.58 (https://bitcoinfees.earn.com/) it will still inarguably leave BTC at a significant disadvantage compared to virtually every other available payment option. Mind you, this calculation is done at current prices and network congestion; the numbers can only be expected to increase assuming further adoption. Not viable.
x775··on Ask HN: Does a good desk setup make you more productive?
Yes, absolutely.

I recently purchased a very wide, standing desk, and boy, do I regret not doing this before. It takes up a healthy portion of the room, but it has increased my productivity immensely. Another, added bonus is the fact that my body feels a whole lot better after a standing day's work than a sitting day's work.

Definitely look into it!

x775··on Nobody Thinks About EBay
I very much see where you are getting at and largely agree, though I must also note that I have frequently managed to find the same item significantly cheaper on eBay than Amazon. If you are in no hurry to get the item(s), cross-checking eBay might very well be worth it.
x775··on Ask HN: How would you monetize a Chrome extension with 85 000 users?
Assuming you have cleared things with Google / YouTube accordingly, what would a PRO version include? A donate button is nice, sure, but I seriously doubt you will see much traction through that - if any at all. Advertisement in addition to what I imagine is served through YouTube would personally make me want to avoid utilising your extension.

x775··on Ask HN: Alternatives to (locally hosted) CrashPlan?
This sounds like an interesting solution, thanks for sharing!

Do you happen to have followed any tutorials, or were you forced to hack things together on your own seeing how you found it to be a pain?

x775··on Epistle 3
"Old friends have been silenced, or fallen by the wayside. I no longer know or recognize most members of the research team, though I believe the spirit of rebellion still persists. I expect you know better than I the appropriate course of action, and I leave you to it. Except no further correspondence from me regarding these matters; this is my final epistle."

This feels a lot like Marc talking about Valve, no?

x775··on Firefox Focus – A new private browser for iOS and Android
I have been using this for a while on one of my phones (OnePlus 5, newest version of OxygenOS) and am fairly satisfied with its overall performance. It works seamlessly for casual browsing - i.e. opening pages from Reddit or similar. I however cannot help but feel as if the standard version with appropriate extensions (i.e. Disconnect, uBlock Origin and thus forth) remains a better alternative than Focus in solving the very issues Focus seeks to accommodate. I do very much love how closing the browser erases everything though. It is worth mentioning that the ability to install extensions is exclusive to Android for now, so Firefox Focus has become my go-to-browser for my iOS devices. If you have Android the above is worth considering though!
x775··on Fake news of a fatal car crash wiped out $4B in ethereum’s market value
The posts on 4chan surfaced several hours after the initial devaluation began (which not only affected, and still affects, ethereum, but virtually every other cryptocurrency too [0][1]) and was consequently not the root cause - though the subsequent reports might have influenced some traders. It is however easy to argue that ethereum, still very much in its infancy, rely almost entirely on Vitalik's continued well-being and leadership.

x775··on Traders lost millions in ethereum crash
As unfortunate as this unarguably is for the affected traders, it does go to show the importance of utilising stop limit orders (sell x amount if price dips below y price, but only sell for price minimum z) as opposed to standard stop losses which simply execute. It is however important to stress that whilst doing the former would protect against flash crashes, is does come with the inherent risk that should a true, rapid devaluation occur, the orders might never execute.

The golden rule of investing -- regardless of asset -- remains not using more than you can afford to lose.

x775··on Ask HN: What you have automated with Python?
That is a neat idea! I should deploy something similar. Thanks!
