wzwy··on Show HN: EthicalAds – Privacy-first ad network for developers
> Each advertiser and publisher is hand-approved so that every ad is relevant and interesting.

With respect to relevancy and interestingness, what’s your criteria for approving advertiser and publisher? If I have a nascent product of uncertain interestingness, can I still be accepted as an advertiser?

> Next, we built a crawler that indexes the sites on our network to help target our ads. Using an ML classifier (built with SpaCy), it can tell if a page is about data science or about full stack development. This allows advertisers to target the niche they are focused on and ensure the ads perform well, without doing any user tracking.

This sounds very interesting really. Have you done any tests to compare your method with Google’s user info harvesting method? I would really love to get a more detailed overview on how the whole system works if you’ve written about that somewhere.

wzwy··on Ask HN: Do you find Discord completely disorienting?
Thank you for the clarification.

My comment about Discord’s inculpability was quite unfair anyway because even though I use Discord, I’ve never used the voice channel. It’s foolish of me to make that comment.

On another note, I wonder how many times those kinds of accidents had happened? And if it’s relatively high, is Discord aware of them?

I see. I like the idea of leaning into my frustrations; maybe I should use it as a signal to persist rather than give up.
wzwy··on Don’t think to write, write to think
Sometimes I think my thoughts are just infinite particles with their Brownian motion on overdrive.

What’s fascinating to me is once my mind is “full” of thoughts, it will start to leak and those thoughts start to externalise automatically. I will pace around like mad, sometimes for hours; talk to myself while others looked askance at me; go on some overly long google binge; and if those are not appropriate, I’ll probably doodle things somewhere.

That leakiness is probably why I like writing, even though I am not good at it. It calms me a bit and reduces my thought velocity quite substantially.

Any tips on how to push oneself?

I frequently find that I reach the “I give up” ceiling very quickly when I try to push myself on most things. I reckon it’s because I can be quite impatient and intolerant towards frustrations.

And what are your thoughts on talent? Sure, most skills can be learned, but the rate of learning can vary and time is limited. How worthwhile is it to learn something if you know you might be slow at it and the skill plateau is probably not too far off? Do you normally aim for good enough for those skills you did learn but don’t think you can be an expert on them?

wzwy··on Ask HN: Do you find Discord completely disorienting?
Is that really Discord’s fault though? I’m not familiar with other chat apps, so maybe Discord is not doing something to prevent such accidents from happening.

Why not use the mobile app as well? Your 1 and 2 already cut a significant amount of noise.
wzwy··on Ask HN: Do you find Discord completely disorienting?
If people use threads more, messages in a channel should be less of a mess. From what I’ve seen, only a few use threads and they’re either a moderator or a prominent member.
wzwy··on Ask HN: Do you find Discord completely disorienting?
How were you able to avoid using it?

It seems like everyone is promoting their discord servers these days, and some to the point of only Discord (or maybe Reddit) and nothing else.

wzwy··on Ask HN: Ok to only allow Google/Apple/FB login for mobile app?
1) Can? I think so. Should? I’m not too sure. Obviously, there are people who don’t have those “social” accounts or don’t want to use them even if they’ve somehow signed up for one. The big question though is not their existence, but their numbers in the potential user base.

By removing adoption friction for one group, you are potentially adding a friction point for another. You’ll have to be the judge on whether it’s worth it.

How about email-only passwordless authentication? Seems like a viable alternative to the username/password. And yeah, keep the social logins as well on top of that.

2) Yeah, that necessity depends on your product.

In what cases or features is authentication needed in a food-ordering app? Storing user addresses and past orders for quicker reordering later? Implementing a loyalty point system?

If in your authentication-less app, you can provide similar features and benefits provided by an authenticated app without compromising much, go for it. Or just cut features and make simplicity your selling point.

wzwy··on Why I quit using SwiftUI
Apple’s paywall to write apps for their AppStore is infuriating. On top of that, it’s a subscription.

The only thing I want is to develop an app for my own use, but I need a paid account if I want an app that lasts long.

wzwy··on Why I quit using SwiftUI
If you’re just starting out, a lot of those complaints will probably be addressed by the time you start your Swift/SwiftUI side-hustle. Unless you’re a very quick-learner in which case you’ll just have to use it in its flawed state, or learn UIKit I guess.
wzwy··on Why I quit using SwiftUI
I’ve recently began developing with Flutter as well. Although I’m not sure about the community, but you’re right, the resources and guidance provided by Google are excellent especially for beginners.

There’s a lot more variety of learning resources compared to other languages; there are texts, workshops, videos, code labs, etc. It’s also nice seeing members of the Flutter team facilitate some of the workshops themselves; it’s refreshing to see developers being involved in educating users, instead of ‘outsourcing’ everything to others.

I’m new to HN. Why the inclination towards plainness? Is it because of performance or look or something else?
