wumpus··on NASA’s Webb takes star-filled portrait of Pillars of Creation
Scientists are unconcerned with that question. Your eye is nothing like the Hubble. Your eye isn't that useful for doing science. Hubble images are.
wumpus··on Why modifying gravity doesn’t add up
I'm not sure what you're trying to say -- there are many astronomy multimodal studies.
wumpus··on Why modifying gravity doesn’t add up
When you run into physics/astronomy people mentioning epicycles, it's not ironic, it's saying that we're missing out on a simpler rule.
wumpus··on Aquila: A unified, low-latency fabric for datacenter networks
Thank you upvoters! I wonder why my other comment has so many downvotes, when it's just as relevant as this one.
wumpus··on Aquila: A unified, low-latency fabric for datacenter networks
Latency measurements are tricky, the usual benchmarks kind of suck and aren't predictive of actual performance in real systems under load.

Given that the entire Myrinet team went to work for Google, and the InfiniPath microarchitecture can be discovered by reading the device driver and some open source code, I'm pretty sure Google's team was well aware of what has been done in the recent past.

wumpus··on Aquila: A unified, low-latency fabric for datacenter networks
InfiniPath / OmniPath dates back to 2004. Cornelis Networks sells the current generation.
wumpus··on James Webb Telescope pictures didn’t begin as images
Your eye is an imperfect sensor, film is an imperfect sensor, the color sensor in your camera is an imperfect sensor, and astronomers do things in particular ways because we're doing science with the data.

The paper always says how the image was made. If you want to know, look there, not at a press release.

wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
You replied to

> I heard recently of a study that found 2-4 hours is sufficient along with an interconnected grid.

That, literally, is not the same as:

> Really, 100% of experts think we need only a few hours of storage and reserve if we connect all the grids?

Again, you're not going to have a good conversation if you keep on doing this.

wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
No, no one said that but you.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Roughly 0% of experts behind more renewables and storage agree with you. But maybe you don't realize that, given that you'd driven them away with this style of argument.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
I was specifically pointing out that nuclear's construction costs have been going up, not down, despite the entire industry's claim that this time will be different.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Sure, let's summarize:

Solar cells have an awesome reduction in cost over time
Wind has an awesome reduction in cost over time
  Nuclear is a clown show
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Modern nuclear has flunked every economic test.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Did you reply to the correct comment? I didn't propose anything.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Yep, electric cars aren't becoming more popular, no way.
wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
> Do you want people freezing to death

Have you ever had a useful discussion after accusing the other side of wanting to kill people?

wumpus··on Vogtle Unit 3 starts nuclear fuel load
Most home electric vehicle charging can be shifted by more than an hour.

wumpus··on Charging cars at home at night is not the way to go: study
Where's the part where you have to install enough batteries to charge most electric cars at night? That was your scenario.

Good choice of states, though: I grew up in SC and live in California. California uses time-of-day rates to nudge people away from charging during the early evening peak.

wumpus··on Charging cars at home at night is not the way to go: study
Good news! The very article we're discussing explains why you don't have to install enough batteries to charge most people's electric cars at night.
wumpus··on EU Open Web Search project kicked off
It could be fun to have a conversation about this topic, but when you start with calling the opinions of others a "deliberate misunderstanding", you've poisoned the well.

Still, it's a good illustration that it's a somewhat unique European value. It's definitely not an American value.

wumpus··on Tangled issues with permanent HTTP redirects
This short essay is good philosophy, but doesn't seem very connected with reality. No, search engines and browsers don't permanently cache permanent redirects. Yes, you should probably use unique usernames instead of reusing them. The second fully mitigates the first, for this particular situation.
wumpus··on EU Open Web Search project kicked off
"Right to be forgotten" is an example of a European value.
wumpus··on EU Open Web Search project kicked off
Blekko (2007-2015) did that -- apparently it wasn't enough for commercial success.
wumpus··on EU Open Web Search project kicked off
I've run a web-scale search engine and I don't think it will work.

Not only are some sites malicious -- mostly unimportant ones -- but many good sites are simply incompetent.

wumpus··on The case for ending calculus requirements for science majors
> But calculus is not being taught to her by engineers.

30+ years ago, when I started undergrad, calc for engineers, pre-meds, and scientists were 3 different classes. Seems like your daughter should choose a more enlightened school.

(Math majors all avoid calc thanks to AP.)

If you're asking about California, we're about to start the rainy season.
wumpus··on Triple-dip La Niña confirmed as BoM makes declaration
You have a choice:

1) Say "you're so dumb" and everyone flags you, so you have little impact on the conversation

2) Don't say "you're so dumb", and enough people will vouch for you that your comments are visible
