wtfrmyinitials··on $194 for hand sanitizer? You must be joking
During a shortage:

Commodity is available. Commodity is affordable.

Pick 1.

wtfrmyinitials··on GNU Typist (2017)
Interesting to see this pop up now, I recently finished building an open source command line typing tutor myself! The idea of mine is you pass it an existing text file (plain text, markdown, source code, etc) and it tests your ability to re-create that file. This way you can practice typing in any syntax. https://github.com/wtfaremyinitials/monktype
wtfrmyinitials··on Five Years of Btrfs
I've been running it on my desktop for a while and it's been wonderful. I have a cron job set to take a snapshot of the filesystem hourly so if I ever blow a file away or a package upgrade goes wonky I'm back up and running in minutes.

Reason number n+1 why Google is bad for the open web

In terms of power usage, the best solution would probably be a passive Ethernet hub.

Why? There isn't much for a troll to plunder
wtfrmyinitials··on Google Chrome Keystone is modifying /var symlink on non SIP Macs causing k-panic
Why did your team deem it appropriate to mess with core system components like /var?
wtfrmyinitials··on A Mexican Hospital, an American Surgeon, and a $5k Check
I’m not sure I understand your point. The surgery was done in a private hospital and paid for by a private health insurance company. It certainly points out that care in the U.S. is too expensive, but I’m not sure how it indicates a single payer system is the best course of action. The doctor was also paid 3x the Medicare rate which sounds like a good thing to me. Am I missing something?
wtfrmyinitials··on Social media use has only minor effects on wellbeing: study
There’s still something to be said for the relative uselessness of most social media. I don’t avoid it by any measure, but I’m also very aware that a minute spent on a given social platform is usually a minute wasted. At least with something like a movie you have a shot at remembering what you saw a month ago. Do you remember what you saw on Instagram yesterday?
wtfrmyinitials··on Let's Build a Compiler
Keeping values small is still useful for the sake of CPU cache
wtfrmyinitials··on Fed Chair Jerome Powell Has ‘Serious Concerns’ with Facebook Libra Proposal
These two are not mutually exclusive
wtfrmyinitials··on Too Many Companies Drain Value from the Economy
Purely competitive, purely monopolistic, monopolistic-competitive, and oligopolistic are terms to describe how a market behaves, not the regulatory environment the market exists within. A "free market" is a regulatory environment and not a market behavior.
wtfrmyinitials··on Too Many Companies Drain Value from the Economy
> So it’s possible that big companies are increasing their market power by using lobbying to capture politicians and regulators. If this is true, it’s very bad news for free markets and capitalism.

A market where companies engage in regulatory capture is not a free market. The word you're looking for is "corporatism", Noah Smith.

wtfrmyinitials··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
Not exactly it but Schadenfreude is pretty close
wtfrmyinitials··on Facebook plans cryptocurrency debut
Worth noting that Maker is different than those other because there's no central authority holding fiat money to maintain the peg. Their stablecoin Dai is minted "out of thin air" and the price peg is maintained via an interest rate mechanism built into the smart contract.
wtfrmyinitials··on A Common Blood Test Can Cost $11 or Almost $1k
Prices set by fiat cannot possibly react quickly enough to changes in the market
wtfrmyinitials··on Google Is Eating Our Mail
> anyone can send an email with any "from" address, and filtering on people/domains in the "from" field is basically pointless if you want to catch spam.

Isn’t this the exact thing that DKIM is designed to fix?

I’m gonna invoke Hanlon’s Razor[1] here and assume middle1 is a random HN user that didn’t realize you only use “Show HN” when it’s your own project.

wtfrmyinitials··on JPM Coin Is the Wildest Big Bank Idea in Many Years
Ok... and? Ownership != control on the Bitcoin network.
wtfrmyinitials··on Alternatives to JSX
One thing the author missed about htm is that you don’t necessarily need to parse it at runtime— there’s a Babel plug-in to compile it to plain js function calls. This way you can develop without a transpiler and add one later when (if) the extra performance becomes necessary.
wtfrmyinitials··on Why is congress trying to pass an obviously unconstitutional law?
Congress hasn’t cared about the constitutionality of new laws for a long time
