wtdata··on Marshal Zhukov's Pocket Knife
Stalingrad was the decisive turn of fate during WWII, if the allies had lost it, the Axis would probably take over the all of Europe. Sure, a lot of men were sacrificed, but this was total war, those sacrifices saved tens of millions.

We live with this slight propaganda that the USA was the responsible to liberate Europe, but in fact, USA showed up here at the end of the war when the Russians had already inflicted a major defeat on the German army, and it was the sacrifice of Russian men at Stalingrad (together with any material help the British could afford to spare to that front), that ultimately won the war for the Allies, not D-day.

I find it interesting that for some people, even when woman get favoured and men get the short end of the stick, they still find a way to paint the situation as sexism againt woman.

I don't understand why this is being downvoted, is a perfectly legitimate question.

Are there any scientific studies confirming this?

> since women haven’t been allowed to compete in sports for thousands of years, what will happen to their bodies when they are allowed to compete?

I am not sure I get it. Are you suggesting that the reason men dominate almost all sports is not due to their undoubtedly greater physical capacity, but due to some societal discrimination?

Also, are your suggesting that evolution works such that appreciable biological differences show up in just a few thousand years?

wtdata··on Twitter is blocked in China, but its state news agency is buying promoted tweets
Democracy? I think you mean Capitalism. The two things, although usually existing together, are not the same thing.
wtdata··on Twitter is blocked in China, but its state news agency is buying promoted tweets
Because you know that what you see in NYT and NN voices mainly the opinion of their editor/journalists, while Twitter can give you the illusion that the opinions you see reaching consensus there, come from your peers.

Sincerely, I got an admonition and flag from you for calling out 2 different recent accounts, created at the same time, with very similar names that all they did was to defend China's autocratic government.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20725773

Although I can understand the admonition (for using the wrong medium to call out those accounts), I simply can't understand how those 2 accounts are still active, given their obvious purpose that goes againt HN guidelines in a more serious way.

wtdata··on Portugal trials use of goats to clear vegetation for reduction of wild fire risk
You are right, there are only an handful of dishes using old goat meat.

I was under the impression (my personal take) that there are quite a few different ways to prepare them though, although the end result (the dish itself) is similar.

wtdata··on Portugal trials use of goats to clear vegetation for reduction of wild fire risk
I can help you, but, they are in Portuguese.

This is the wikipedia page talking about the most famous dish: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanfana

This is one of the recipes: https://aldeiasdoxisto.pt/artigo/531

wtdata··on Portugal trials use of goats to clear vegetation for reduction of wild fire risk
This is the comment made some days ago in the news about meat and CO2 emissions.

This idea that animals just eat the produce of intensive farming (or that grazing pastures are planted by men specifically for that purpose) is wrong in many parts of the world.

We have the obvious example of Argentina, where free grazing cattle uses the naturally available grass to get fed.

In the case of Southern Europe, there are also goats that have been used to clean the forests for a long time in order to prevent fires, and that provides for most or even all of their feeding requirements (besides fulfilling the important role of fire prevention).

The idea going around how animals are so inefficient per Kg of food/Kg CO2, fails to take into account (basically all the time) that part of those animals, only consume naturally occurring flora that is in no way planted by men.

P.S.: As an interesting related side note, there are a lot of cooking recipes for old goat in Portugal (the meat needs to be cooked differently).

Does this mean we will finally be able to easily and quickly, hack that pesky people forcing us all to listen to their Bluetooth speakers (invariably with bad music) on public transports?
wtdata··on China Is Waging a Disinformation War Against Hong Kong Protesters
Sure it is, but, it is really, really funny you have to create so many new accounts to do it, and all of them defending exactly China. I.e. the autocratic government under the suspicion of using its disinformation machine to manipulate us.
wtdata··on YouTube’s LGBTQ Problem Is a Business-Model Problem

wtdata··on China Is Waging a Disinformation War Against Hong Kong Protesters
Oh, they normally are, it's just that it's suspicious, that so many of them are being created with the single purpose of participating in a thread, that talks no less than about China's disinformation machine.
wtdata··on China Is Waging a Disinformation War Against Hong Kong Protesters
Here we go again...

Seriously, it's not difficult to understand that any majorly autocratic government, left or right, needs a centralized government by definition.

That is got nothing to do with being left or right, but with being liberal or autocratic.

wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
The West, eternally blamed - by a specific part of the political spectrum - for intervening in foreign matters and for not intervening in foreign matters.
wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
> It's unfortunate, but HK didn't come across democracy by its own struggle in the way most countries did. Such foundations are just inherently unstable, how can it possibly be any other way?

Democracy in HK society seems actually very stable and ingrained into HK societiy mind. So much, that a territory that is 0.5% of the population of mainland China, is willing to stand up to the biggest army in the world to defend what is left of that democracy.

wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
That's a very biased take on what happened in France.

The protesters were burning cars and destroying public and private property to vast extents, besides throwing Molotov cocktails at the police.

The yellow vests went way, way beyond their right to protest.

wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
> All I am saying is that people need to know the actual context of the situation.

The actual context of the situation is that indeed, if the British hadn't controlled Hong Kong for a time this conflict wouldn't be happening.

It wouldn't be happening, because people in Hong Kong wouldn't know what it is to live in a free democratic society as they lived in the last half a century of British "occupation", so they would just accept the human rights and personal freedoms violations of the autocratic government of China, without knowing any better.

wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
Some major news networks are covering the event as well:

https://www.businessinsider.com/videos-chinese-military-vehi...

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/13/hong-kong-protests-china-med...

P.S.: On a side note, it's quite sickening to see how much American society is divided, that even the original Twitter thread became flooded with people talking about Trump and blaming him for what is happening in Hong Kong. It is absolutely ridiculous to an outsider to see this behavior.

wtdata··on Chinese military entering Shenzen, just across the border with Hong Kong
What does that got to do with anything? Why do people keep bringing centuries old examples of the shortcomings of western civilization, to apologize for the very present disregards against human rights in many non-western countries?

Specially in a case where the legacy that is being put in question is exactly the culture of respect for human rights, civil liberties and democracy brought by an Western nation, that is now under threat by an autocratic power: The central Government of China.

There is a term coined specifically for that: Whataboutism

wtdata··on HK police fires rubber bullet at protesters and civilians at point blank range
Are we seriously trying to compare what is happening in Honk Kong (and rest of China, that doesn't appear on TV), with the almost infinite patience that the french police shows, with the permanent protests in France about anything they feel like protesting violently against that particular week?

I still remember French setting fire to dozens of cars in several different protests, while the police was too afraid to intervene, or be accused of curtailing those "peaceful" citizens rights to express themselves as they see fit.

wtdata··on ‘No One Saw a Thing’: When a Midwest Town Banded Together to Kill the Town Bully
You do realize that personal gun ownership was always banned in the UK, like, since ever, right? That "statistic" you just tried to pass about how knife attacks increased when the UK banned guns, was completely made up.
wtdata··on ‘No One Saw a Thing’: When a Midwest Town Banded Together to Kill the Town Bully
But, gun ownership clearly correlates with gun related violence (i.e. violent crime). Less guns, less violent crime.
wtdata··on ‘No One Saw a Thing’: When a Midwest Town Banded Together to Kill the Town Bully
> In my opinion, minorities in particular have reason to arm themselves and to be prepared to defend themselves if necessary.

That's an interesting take, since minorities commit - by very, very far - the greatest amount of violent crimes per capita in the USA.

wtdata··on A Mexican Hospital, an American Surgeon, and a $5k Check
> Dr. Parisi, who spent less than 24 hours in Cancún, was paid $2,700, or three times what he would have received from Medicare

This illustrates perfectly the point I (and most everyone on Europe) tries to get to Americans and often they - for some weird reason - refuse to understand: healthcare can be cheaper and better to everyone (yes, this means that universal healthcare can and is cheaper on the taxpayers in most of the EU than for American taxpayers... with ours being universal), if you just understand that the middle man you created by wanting the state out of it, is getting most of the money.

It's really so simple to understand...
