wtdata··on Summer heat killed nearly 1,500 in France, officials say
We need to stop with this ancient idea that AC is problematic against the environment. There are quite a few uninformed comments on this thread.

Just by using their AC also in the winter to heat their houses instead of traditional heating systems, these people are already having a lower CO2 footprint (even when using the AC to cool down a few weeks in the year) than people that don't use an AC.

Modern AC systems work with in inverter heat pump and are extremely efficient at cooling down and heating up a house since all they do is to move heat from one place to the other.

wtdata··on Hong Kong can be a gateway to liberal values for China

wtdata··on The Plot to Assassinate Orwell
What I find interesting, is the great number of people - specially in the last decade when reading 1984 suddenly became popular - that keeps telling us all that Orwell's works are a warning specifically against fascism and point Orwell's role in Spain as proof that he was himself a communist.

Orwell left quite clear that after having seen both Nazism and Communism in action, he was staunchly against both forms of totalitarianism.

wtdata··on Hong Kong can be a gateway to liberal values for China
Demanding due process and civil liberties is not radical, it's just following the UN chart for human rights.

EDIT: The immediate downvote of any pro HK civil liberties comment continues on HN and still @dang, instead of looking into the real issue and into the number of new accounts created on HN to specifically support the PoC in these threads, chastises whoever points what is happening.

wtdata··on Apple Watch Series 5
I have a Xiaomi Amazfit. Cost me 55€, and the battery lasts 15 days with an always on display. It has included GPS, compass, pressure meter, heart rate monitor and sleep monitoring.

Sincerely, other than looks (and I woild still not bring an Apple phone to more formal occasions just like I don't bring my Amazfit) I can't understand why anyone would pay 10x more for an iWatch not can I stand that I would have to charge it everyday.

wtdata··on India Loses Contact with Probe Just as It Prepares to Land on Moon
Homeless people in developed countries, are in almost every case (perhaps with the exception of the USA, I'm not sure) homeless due to mental issues and because they don't want to go into community housing. They aren't homeless due to a general lack of resources.
wtdata··on The End of the Roman Empire Wasn’t That Bad
For one, the major task of implementing a single currency shared by a big number of the world's richest nations.
wtdata··on Suicide rates climbing, especially in rural America

wtdata··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
Seriously, what kind of idiots have downvoting rights on HN that they downvoted the above comment?
wtdata··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
Well, I am an European, it's sad about the US Gov./DoJ, but that is not something I have the right to demand from my part.
wtdata··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
That fine qualifies as a "slap in the hand" for Google if it happens infrequently enough (which is the case).
wtdata··on Google’s GDPR Workaround
What is sad is that the EU commission doesn't take real action against Google. At best we are to expect a slap in the hand, at worst, the investigations will drag on and nothing will happen.
wtdata··on Real-Time maps warn Hong Kong protesters of water cannons and riot police
> I'm not so sure: they wouldn't want to be seen internationally as the 800-Lb gorilla.

China didn't have any issue with being the gorilla in cases like Tibet. So, no real reason why HK would be any different.

wtdata··on China sows disinformation on Hong Kong using porn accounts on Twitter
When the West intervenes in these matters they get called colonialists. When they don't intervene, people wonder why they don't do anything.
wtdata··on For a lower climate footprint, vegetarian diet beats local
Greenhouse emissions from meat/dairy production (the all chain) in highly efficient meat industries of 1st world countries, are negligible when compared to to other sources. [1]

Even when looking at the global numbers and taking into account countries with less efficient systems, the global total is still less than 15% of all greenhouse emissions. [2]

You drink green (as opposed to mature) white (grape color) wine cold, specially in the summer.
wtdata··on Telegram moves to protect identity of Hong Kong protesters
These are good news. But, why don't they use Signal to start with?
wtdata··on Measles: Four European nations lose eradication status
The article tries to have us believe it's the anti vax movement doing this.

Although that's probably true in the UK, are we really going to pretend the problem in Greece is also some non vaccination movement? This is absolutely Orwellian.

wtdata··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
> There are no converts, either you started a Linux person, or you started a Mac person.

That's a clear over generalization. I started with Mac, used everything Mac for about 15 years (various Macbooks, Mabooks Pro, iMacs and one Mac Pro) and then changed to everything Linux about 5 years ago.

I am a scientific researcher, my main activity in the computer is programming, I didn't miss the Mac at all except for a little tool that I used for my personal life (GarageSale) and that I couldn't get anything similar (it's a tool to create eBay auctions in a much easier and nifty way).

Anyway, there is nothing about the Mac itself I miss.

wtdata··on Possible detection of a black hole with a mass that was thought to be impossible
No, it is of a mass that according to our still standing understanding of astrophysics, is impossible to create by the collapse of "a single star".

But you can very well have this mass by the colapse of two black holes, or by one black hole that ends up consuming one or more stars nearby in due time.

wtdata··on Possible detection of a black hole with a mass that was thought to be impossible
This title is sensationalist.

Of course there are black holes with a lot more than 50 solar masses. It's just that they aren't created in a single event by the death of a star.

wtdata··on EU governments choose independence from US cloud providers with Nextcloud
I used Nextcloud for more than one year, but in the end I found it too bloated for my usage and I kept having problems with some outstanding bugs in it.

I finally moved to Syncthing one year ago and never had to configure anything else. I have it running in a docker container that gets automatically updated and needed zero configuration since then. It's also much faster at syncronizing files than Nextcloud was, and doesn't need a central repository.

If you don't need Nextcloud fancy features and just want a Dropbox self hosted alternative, Syncthing should be the way to go.

wtdata··on The Provocations of Camille Paglia
Wolfgang Pauli deeply believed in the occult and Isaac Newton in alchemy and biblical interpretations.
wtdata··on The Provocations of Camille Paglia
> What does this really mean? Does it mean anything?

She means that human consciousness is born from our actions towards nature since before we were conscious and that we cannot detach morality from that. Furthermore, we can't hope to define sex and gender, before understanding the roots of morality since they are defined by our primeval nature, not by society rules born out of conscious thought.

wtdata··on The Cherokee want a representative in Congress, taking up a 200-year-old promise
The point was not the "other people were also bad back then" the point was that, the Chereokee themselves were bad people back them.

Chereokee were oppressing the other tribes before the arrival of the Europeans and then fighting along the Europeans in order to dominate other tribes.

wtdata··on The Cherokee want a representative in Congress, taking up a 200-year-old promise
I hope you do realize that they were conquerors themselves (between the tribes) and that many tribes happily fought besides the Europeans in order to gain the upper hand over other tribes, specifically, the Cherokee:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee

It also begs the question: What are the Romans and the Arabs going to give my country in return for having conquered us 2000 and 1000 years ago, respectively.

wtdata··on 'Ancestors' Is an Audacious Experiment. I Never Want to Play It Again
First time I have head about this game, the concept seems fantastic.

About needing to share info online, it reminds me of the Dark Souls series. The game series was made with the need to share tips in online forums (and through a system in game), in mind.

wtdata··on The Amazon Is Not the 'Lungs of the World'
Macron's stance seems just a way to appease the hard left. It doesn't really matter if his declarations are scientifically correct or not.

It is the most appealing course for him. He literally doesn't have to take any action, but to shout out some sentences raising awareness of Brazil and putting the blame on their hard right president, and, voilá, free points next to the French hard-left electorate (which he really needs at the present, after the continued demonstrations from the yellow vests).

Something similar already happened with Merkel (although that time, it wasn't just lip service, there were policies and effort to be made). Merkel was hated by the hard-left in Europe, after the way she managed the crisis, and the huge social issues the policies she forced, created when they were imposed to Southern Europe. Suddenly, she became a defender of basically unchecked migration, and the hard-left completely stop doing her opposition and even supporting her.
