wspeirs··on Shoelace knots
I'm honestly not trying to take anything away from Ian, but he didn't "invent" the "Ian knot", just renamed the handcuff knot: http://www.animatedknots.com/handcuff/
wspeirs··on Amazon Web Services in Plain English
This is great... well done. Any chance you could side-by-side it with Azure & Google Cloud's offerings? That would be MASSIVELY useful!
wspeirs··on Chef Software Raises $40M in Series E Funding
Yea, part of me wondered if they took on this money to help go IPO...
wspeirs··on Chef Software Raises $40M in Series E Funding
> "Chef’s business is growing exponentially with annual recurring revenue growth accelerating as the company scales"

Makes me wonder why they needed the money.

> "This new round will allow Chef to extend its leadership in the DevOps market by expanding Chef’s operations globally and accelerating product development amidst surging customer demand"

Maybe I'm just cynical, but doesn't really tell me too much.

wspeirs··on Major SSH outage at BitBucket
Update: "Partial service has been restored. Repository clones and pulls should complete without problem on HTTPS as well as SSH. Pushes and pull-request updates are still functioning at a limited capacity and may not work as expected for some users. Sep 2, 15:05 UTC"

So ~2 hours from "investigating" to "identified"... not a terrible response.

wspeirs··on Major SSH outage at BitBucket
Yea... it's really bad. I was hoping someone in the NH community had deeper knowledge of the problem. Curious if it was a DoS attack similar to those launched against GitHub a while back.
wspeirs··on Gotty – Share your terminal as a web application
... well there you go!
wspeirs··on Gotty – Share your terminal as a web application
I've always thought it'd be interesting to write a display driver for VirtualBox that uses WebGL so you can essentially get a desktop through a web browser...
wspeirs··on Gotty – Share your terminal as a web application
I think it comes with all the usual caveats of "don't run super sensitive things on external networks". My guess is the motivation is for presentations and other "one-time" usages like that.
wspeirs··on Ask HN: Is Project Fi worth it?
Can you only use the Nexus 6 with the plan? I've got a OnePlus
wspeirs··on Vim's 400 line function to wait for keyboard input
Many companies (FactSet for example) still use VMS, and vim on those systems... I think folks would be surprised how many legacy systems are still out there.
wspeirs··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
> DO is closer to competing with just Elastic Beanstalk

Hu? DO is like EC2, a box on the net with an IP address. Elastic Beanstalk is a PaaS that will auto-scale for you.

wspeirs··on Rust-Compare: a comparison of Rust, C++, and Java
Added a note... thanks!
wspeirs··on Rust-Compare: a comparison of Rust, C++, and Java
I updated interfaces and enums. To your comment about move semantics for structs and such, I actually found the book lacking. I just did a quick Google search of the book for "move semantics" and couldn't find it anywhere. Where specifically does it talk about parameter passing?
wspeirs··on Rust-Compare: a comparison of Rust, C++, and Java
Thanks! Made the fix: https://github.com/wspeirs/rust-compare/commit/0c9fe97c7ae45...

You said there are "some pretty wrong statements," any others? You can also fork and fix if you'd like to help... it'd be greatly appreciated!

wspeirs··on Rust-Compare: a comparison of Rust, C++, and Java
How do you iterate over an array in Rust?
wspeirs··on Visual Rust 0.1 is out
Sadly doesn't work with Visual Studio Code: https://code.visualstudio.com/
wspeirs··on Ask HN: Should I consider a startup based on scraped data?
I agree, I'd "go for it" and worry when it becomes a real problem. If you grow fast enough, then everyone will want to be on there (maybe you could even sell access to the #1 spot) much like Google. If you don't get any traction, then no one will notice or care.

I'd chalk this up as a "good problem to have"... then again, Grooveshark probably thought the same thing: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9468476

wspeirs··on Ask HN: How do you log application events?
Site wouldn't load for me :-(
wspeirs··on The Python Road Not Taken
This is the "problem" with not having things controlled by some central figure. Following the road example, the Dept of Transportation would simply open the new road, and close the old. You wouldn't have a chance to continue traveling down the old. This happens (to a large extent) with Java. Oracle opens the new road, then stops fixing potholes on the old one. You're not "forced" to move over, but eventually you stop wanting to fix your suspension.

That said, who is central enough to put an "end" date on Python and "force" people to move over?

wspeirs··on Google Cloud sucks
I've had similar experiences with their auto-scaling. It used to be (looks like they've changed it[1]) to get the cheaper prices you had to use auto-scaling. The problem was that it would start a new instance to service one request, then keep it sitting idle for days. Of course, I was still getting charged per-hour for that idle instance.

I've also had instances on the Python side where I was using lxml, updated my site, and it stopped working because it couldn't find lxml. I followed their directions[2] and it still wouldn't work. I rolled back my code, still wouldn't work. Without a better log messages than, "Cannot find library", I was "forced" to move to Digital Ocean and run it all myself.

Finally, their Cloud Monitoring[3] falls down all the time. I realize it's beta, but I get an email about once-a-week because of a failure.

I'm a fan of Google in just about every other area, but they're really so far behind Amazon it's sad...

wspeirs··on One line you should add to every makefile
I wrote a god-awful Perl script to gen (and update) Makefiles for me: https://github.com/wspeirs/makemake
wspeirs··on Amazon Dash Button
I'd worry about an appliance too quickly re-ordering. My printer refused to print because it thought the toner was all gone. A black marker to the sensor on the side of the toner and I'm back and printing. It's been almost a month now and still going strong.
wspeirs··on Amazon Dash Button
I don't know, looks amazing to me. Yea the branded button isn't great, but let's face it, it's going to be sitting next to the branded box/bottle anyway.

If your toddler presses it, the worst they can do is order once. It's configured to only allow one order until the item is delivered. That isn't to say your toddler still cannot do damage...

wspeirs··on A compiler from Go to JavaScript
Pretty interesting idea... and they even have an online playground: http://www.gopherjs.org/playground/
wspeirs··on Java is Pass-by-Value, Dammit
Ah, true... so what is the difference between a reference and a pointer then?
wspeirs··on Java is Pass-by-Value, Dammit
Why is it inaccurate to call it a reference in Java?

You don't dereference a variable in Java to access it, so that would make me think reference, not pointer.

wspeirs··on “I'm not smart enough.”
"I'm not smart enough" is, I think, 50% "I'm too intimidated by what I don't know" and 50% "I don't care enough to overcome the initial learning curve."
wspeirs··on Cities with High Salary to Cost of Living Ratios for Software Developers
Yea, NYC has a HUGE advantage because of the train system going into and out of the city. You can easily commute south to Jersey or north to Connecticut. Each stop going away from NYC drops ~$20K on comparable houses (with a few exceptions like Greenwich). I've heard in the bay area the train system is terrible.
