wrycoder··on Telephone Line Rural Outside Plant
Is your endpoint routable? Is the IP fixed or dynamic?
wrycoder··on Meta data center electricity consumption hits 14,975GWh
1.5 B$ per year at $0.15/KWh.
wrycoder··on Carbon removal plant absorbs CO2 at 99,000 times the rate of all Earth's oceans
Well, you could waste a lot of money that could be put to better use.

Recent research shows that the global warming we are experiencing is causing the increase in atmospheric CO2, not the other way around.[0] Better to spend some money on investigating the actual reason for the warming.

wrycoder··on Calling All Hackers
And, if you were to balance the Federal budget, you would inflate away 75% of the national debt in 50 years at 3% inflation. But, only a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution could accomplish that.

wrycoder··on Writing a C Compiler: Build a Real Programming Language from Scratch
Nand2Tetris is also like that - they provide an outline and tests, but you have to do the work. And, having the implementation language be different from the target language reduces confusion.

Plus, you get to become proficient in OCaml, which is a pretty good language.

wrycoder··on CockroachDB license change
Well named! It is like a roach motel - once in, you can never leave.
wrycoder··on OpenBSD – Game of Trees 0.102 released
”Game of Trees (Got) is a version control system which prioritizes ease of use and simplicity over flexibility.”
wrycoder··on DOJ may want to break up Google
They are behind the curve at this point.
wrycoder··on Tensors, the geometric tool that solved Einstein's relativity problem
This is a surprisingly low quality article for Quanta. The discussion here is far beyond it.
wrycoder··on HamClock – a real time space weather dashboard
There is also https://www.hamqsl.com/solar.html which gives more elaborate propagation information in various versions for many platforms.
wrycoder··on How great was the Great Oxidation Event?
Bare rocks and water don’t burn, they are already oxidized. Life chemically reduces CO2, providing material than can support combustion.
wrycoder··on Coulomb explosion
It turns out that the great majority of the energy in a fission explosion is partitioned into a Coulomb explosion of the fissile material.
wrycoder··on What Is Entropy?
Some say Hungarians are actually aliens.
wrycoder··on Initial details about why CrowdStrike's CSAgent.sys crashed
When I see that, I usually upvote it.
wrycoder··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
The problem occurs when the newcomers adopt a haughty, colonialist attitude and yet have little to offer to their hosts.
wrycoder··on Cosmic simulation reveals how black holes grow and evolve
Yes, but he said that 19 years ago. Much has been learned since then.
wrycoder··on A hydrogen-powered air taxi flew 523 miles emitting only water vapor
Hydrogen is just a “battery” for energy storage. The ultimate goal is to produce “green” hydrogen by cracking water using solar energy - either via photovoltaics or developing a way through bioengineering photosynthesis.
wrycoder··on California to make financial literacy classes requirement graduate high school
That would be good, but how about the same requirement before running for state office?
wrycoder··on Largest nuclear fusion reactor is finally completed
Very long article with no news content.
wrycoder··on Australia out of natural gas, pays gas companies to export its reserves
So, to get to 100%, Australia would have to increase solar usage by 1000x. Which, according to the above figure, would mean covering ten percent of Australia with solar panels. Sorry, I don’t believe the analysis.
wrycoder··on The Biggest Problem in Mathematics Is Finally a Step Closer to Being Solved
It is for me.
wrycoder··on A simplified Python simulation of diffusion
TFA is a decent first cut. It may be inefficient (the author already mentioned and discarded a N^2 approach), but it’s easily understandable. The author also mentioned that he was planning a NumPy version, so maybe some of the topics you addressed will be covered.
wrycoder··on Chrome is adding `window.ai` – a Gemini Nano AI model right inside the browser
Must be a fuss in Redmond “They can’t do that! Let’s sue.” Well, they beat Lindows, let’s see if they can beat Google.
wrycoder··on A bunch of programming advice I'd give to myself 15 years ago
It may not be worth the time to automate those, but I always take the time to document them, usually in Obsidian, where I can easily find them later.
wrycoder··on Raspberry Pi is now a public company
Tech itself has become more negative lately, for a number of reasons. HN remains a marvelous place - I was just last night enjoying the variety of posts and discussion. I’ve not found anything like it elsewhere.
wrycoder··on Lynn Conway has died
I took a one week industrial course at MIT back in ‘79, I think it was. Sussman, Knight, Batalli, the whole amazing crew. We started from scratch with gates and progressed to finished layout designs by the end of the week. Most everything had been coded in Scheme, including the test simulation software. I walked out with a five inch binder of instruction and a vastly overloaded head. It was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. Shortly thereafter, they did the Scheme chip using those tools.
wrycoder··on Own a weather station? We want your data
From Dec to Feb mine is shaded by trees (sun doesn't get to high altitude here in Winter at 42N). The battery got pretty far down, but the unit went into low power mode and kept working fine, as far as I can tell. It's back up to full battery since March. I may move it up to a higher and sunnier location.
wrycoder··on How Mount Everest killed George Mallory
Yeah. The claim doesn’t ring true for NASA in those days.
wrycoder··on An intuitive guide to Maxwell's equations (2020)
Maxwell's equations are statements of experimental results in differential form, plus Maxwell's guess that there are no magnetic monopoles and that there is a displacement current to carry current through a capacitor, providing continuity.

You don't really derive them (unless the professor had in mind, "Produce them from the integral forms"). A better question would be, "Derive the EM wave equation in free space from Maxwell's equation and determine the phase velocity."
